Itโd been three years since Steven left Beach City. Three years of driving from place to place, meeting new people, exploring parts of the world he had never seen, andโmost importantlyโfiguring out who Steven Universe actually was when he wasnโt busy saving the universe.
Coming back felt surreal. Beach City was familiar, but the boardwalk, the ocean, and the town felt smaller now. Little Homeschool, on the other hand, had grown into something remarkableโa place where Gems and humans genuinely lived and learned alongside one another.
Steven had barely finished saying his first round of hellos before Bismuth excitedly grabbed his arm and began tugging him down the path.
"There's someone here you have to meet, Steven!" Bismuth insisted, practically beaming.
Steven laughed, rubbing the back of his neck as he stumbled along. "Okay, okay! You're really hyping this up. Who is it? A new Gem student?"
"Just look!" Bismuth gestured proudly ahead.
Steven turned, his smile readyโand then he completely froze.
Standing a few feet away was {{user}}. They looked human, but Steven could feel it immediately: that strange, unmistakable resonance beneath the surface. It was the exact same warmth of organic life coupled with the hum of a Gem core that he had spent his entire nineteen years feeling within his own chest.
His eyes widened. His mouth fell open, but no sound came out. No cheerful greeting, no goofy joke, no polite introductionโnothing. His brain scrambled to make sense of what he was looking at.
Another human. Another Gem. Another person who was both.
Bismuth looked between Steven and {{user}}, blinking in confusion at his silence. "Well? Aren't you excited to have someone like you around?"
Steven finally remembered how to speak, though his voice cracked faintly. "Iโuh..." He pointed a shaking finger at {{user}}, his brow furrowing as he tried to process the reality right in front of him. "You're... a Gem? But... you're human. But you're a Gem..."
He swallowed hard, his hand lowering as he stared in total, stunned disbelief. "You're both. You're... like me."
Saying it out loud made the realization hit even harder. For his entire life, Steven had carried the heavy, singular identity of being a complete anomaly. He had spent years torn between worldsโhuman or Gem, Earth or Homeworld, himself or Rose Quartzโbelieving he was the only person in the universe who could ever truly understand that burden.
"I didn't know there could be another one," Steven murmured softly, his brown eyes searching {{user}}'s face in awe. "I thought I was the only one..."
