MILES SOCORRO

The reef at twilight breathes in colors Pandora saves for no other hour—coral polyps unfurling like slow fireworks beneath the surface, painting the shallows in shifting turquoise and violet, while above, the sky melts from rose-gold into deep indigo, the first stars pricking through like shy witnesses.

Spider walks barefoot along the woven walkway that bridges the marui pods, the pandanus fibers rough and familiar under his soles, his lungs pulling in great, greedy breaths of Pandoran air—no mask, no hiss of recycled oxygen—for the first time in his entire life.

He still can’t quite believe it. The memory of suffocating, mask cracked, vision tunneling to black, is raw and close, but so is the memory of K!ri's hands glowing, her voice calling him back through Eywa’s vast web. Now his skin tingles with something new and he feels… different. Lighter. Bigger inside his own body.

You find him near the edge of the village, where the walkway curves out over deeper water and the glow of the reef fades into mysterious dark. You’re in your riding gear still, hair loose and wind-tangled, queue swaying gently with each step. The sight of you stops him mid-stride, breath catching in a way that has nothing to do with oxygen levels.

You’ve always been there; his shadow and his light since you were kids racing through the Omatikaya forest, you a full Na’vi girl with eyes like forest pools, him the human stray the Sullys couldn’t shake. You teased him mercilessly about his mask, his short legs, his endless questions, but you also defended him fiercely when anyone else tried it. Somewhere along the way the teasing turned into something else: long looks, shoulders brushing his, the way you’d trace the freckles on his arms with one curious fingertip and pretend it was just scientific interest.

Tonight, though, there’s no pretending.

You stop a breath away, close enough that he can smell the faint sweetness of the flower you tucked behind your ear earlier. Your eyes search his face like you’re memorizing the changes.

“You’re breathing,” you whisper, wonder threading your voice. “Really breathing.”

He laughs, a soft huff that’s half disbelief. “Yeah. Crazy, right? No more sounding like Darth Vader’s asthmatic cousin.”

You don’t laugh. You just look at him taking in the way his chest rises and falls without the mechanical rasp, the absence of the exopack that used to define every inch of space between you. Something shifts in your expression, tender and fierce all at once.

Slowly, you reach up and place your hands on his shoulders. Your palms are warm, callused from bowstrings and ikran reins, and he feels the contact like a spark straight to his heart.

“You were always perfect, Spider,” you say quietly, voice steady even though your eyes shine suspiciously bright. “Mask or no mask. Human or… whatever beautiful thing you are now. You were perfect just the way you were.”

His throat tightens. He’s spent his whole life feeling like the odd piece; the human kid in a Na’vi world, too small, too fragile, too different. Hearing you say it like that, like it’s the simplest truth in the universe, undoes something in him.

You slide your hands up, cupping his cheeks and lean in. The world narrows to the warmth of your palms and the soft hush of waves below. When your lips meet his, it’s feather-light at first, almost hesitant, like you’re asking a question you’re terrified to hear answered.

He answers anyway.

Spider’s hands come up to cover yours, the kiss deepens—slow, breathless, full of every unspoken thing the two of you have carried for years. The reef glows brighter around you both, as if Eywa herself is smiling.

When you finally pull back (just far enough to breathe) your foreheads stay pressed together, noses brushing. His eyes are closed, a huge, goofy grin spreading across his face that he couldn’t hide if he tried.

“Holy crap,” he whispers, voice cracking with happiness. “That was… wow. Like, top-ten life moments. Maybe top-one.”
