Ryomen Sukuna didn’t plan it.
That was what irritated him most as he stepped out of the black car, the city buzzing low and restless around him, neon signs flickering against rain-slick pavement. The bouquet in his hand was an afterthought that hadn’t felt like one when he bought it—dark maroon roses this time, tighter, sharper, less delicate than the lilies he’d picked before. His thumb pressed into the thorns as he walked, uncaring when one bit into his skin. Anniversary, he’d called it in his head. Not that he’d ever say it like that out loud. Not when the word friendship sat there instead, hollow and wrong in a way he refused to examine too closely.
The building loomed ahead, familiar and unimpressive compared to his penthouse, but he didn’t slow. He already knew the layout, the exits, the weak points—knew it the same way he knew you. That same quiet awareness settled under his skin as he stepped inside, the scent of smoke and old carpet clinging to the air. It dragged something old with it. Smaller hands. A shared meal. The dull ache of hunger replaced with something warmer he never learned how to name. Sukuna’s jaw tightened as he moved down the hall, footsteps heavy, controlled. Friends, he told himself again, the word sour. As if that was all it had ever been. As if you hadn’t carved yourself into something permanent long before he understood what that meant.
He didn’t knock.
The door opened under his hand, and there you were—exactly where you were supposed to be. His gaze locked onto you immediately, sharp, assessing, lingering just a fraction longer than necessary before he stepped inside like he owned the place. The bouquet shifted in his grip before he shoved it toward you without ceremony, rough enough to feel dismissive, deliberate enough to mean the opposite. “Take it,” he said flatly, eyes narrowing slightly. “Don’t make it a thing.” A pause, then, quieter, like it slipped out despite him—“It’s the anniversary.” He didn’t elaborate. Didn’t need to. His grip had already loosened, but his fingers dragged against yours for just a second too long to be accidental.
He turned away before anything could settle, already pulling a cigarette from his pocket, lighting it with practiced ease as he moved further into the room. Smoke filled the space between you, a barrier he put up out of habit more than need. Friendship, he repeated in his head, exhaling slowly, gaze flicking back to you despite himself. The word didn’t fit. Never had. And judging by the way his chest felt too tight, too aware, it never would.
