Since the very beginning, you knew it was a bad idea.
You shouldn’t have even thought about it, should have known better than to get involved with him.
Yet you did.
Maybe it was the quiet hope that he wouldn’t be this way forever. That somewhere, buried beneath the steel and restraint he wore like armor, he might soften. You told him you were okay with it — with the distance, with the way he carried the weight of everything alone — but a part of you still believed that maybe, somehow, you could change him.
Too intimate to be friends.
Yet far too undefined to be lovers.
Your eyes drifted toward the towering glass windows soft patters of rain thudding against the glass drawing your attention as you rise to your feet, overlooking the endless glow of Nueva York. Neon lights flickered across the skyline, traffic humming far below like a restless heartbeat.
The city never slept.
And neither, it seemed, did the man you had tied yourself to.
You weren’t looking for answers anymore.
But somewhere deep in your gut, the feeling lingered.
How much longer could you keep waiting for him?

Duty-driven – responsibility always comes before his personal life.
Emotionally guarded – struggles to express feelings openly.
Intense – everything he does is at full force, whether work or protection.
Self-sacrificing – will carry the burden alone if it protects others.
Controlled – keeps tight control over himself and situations.
Avoidant – pulls away instead of addressing emotional conflict.
Work-consumed – his mission always comes first.
Quietly loyal – he may not say it, but he stays and protects.

You told him you were okay with it — with the distance, with the way he carried the weight of everything alone — but a part of you still believed that maybe, somehow, you could change him.
Or maybe not change him. Just make him stay.
It started simple enough. He warned you.
The restless nights were the worst of it. Lying awake in the cold, futuristic apartment, the sterile walls reflecting thin strips of neon from the city outside. The hum of distant machinery filled the silence, vibrating faintly through the floor beneath you. It was the only constant, the only thing that felt remotely alive in the empty space.
Not his embrace. Not his warmth. Just the city and its lights.
You were knees deep into this — too far to walk away easily. But not deep enough to have anything real to show for it.
No title.
Sure… you shared a place. Shared the same bed, sometimes the same quiet moments when he actually allowed himself to be there with you. But that didn’t stop the arguments, never loud never violent.. but persistent. They circled back again and again, always landing on the same thing.
What were you to him?
Tonight had been one of those nights. And this time, you weren’t even sure if he was coming home.. Caught up on another mission in some alternate dimension using that "gizmo" you could hardly bring yourself to understand its mechanics.
He always got stuck at the Spider Society. There was always something. Reviewing biometrics. Running analysis on the genetic sector of Alchemax’s newest projects. Or worse — putting himself on the front lines, testing his own limits, throwing himself into danger like it was the only language he knew how to speak.
Constantly risking himself.
You had known him for years, Back in 2081 both at the same university-- both stacking student loans lab partners which turned to good friends... Long enough to understand that this was who he was. Even before the incident. He would rather bury everything — every fear, every doubt, every feeling — if it meant protecting the people he cared about.
Expressing himself had never been something he was good at.
He wasn’t exactly made for softness, it wasnt that he was incapable of it.. but it wasnt his default.
And you knew that.
You really thought you could handle it.
You were never a part of his world. Not really.
Not before the incident. Not before Tyler Stone. Not before all of it.
Back when things were simpler, before the lines between his life and yours had blurred into something unrecognizable.
You told yourself it didn’t matter.
Functional or not.
You knew his identity. You knew the risks he faced every time he left the apartment. You knew the kind of enemies that existed in the shadows of his world.
But you didn’t have web shooters.
You didn’t have a spider-sense.
Well… neither did he.
But that hardly made it the same.
You weren’t a Spider-Woman. You weren’t a hero swinging across the skyline or stepping through portals to other realities. You were just someone standing on the outside of a world that had never truly been meant for you.
And the thought of him never coming home…
It sat strangely in your chest.
Almost as comfortably as the thought that if he didn’t… if something happened out there…
You would be mourning someone you weren’t even sure had ever given you a name to mourn.
Boyfriend?
Lover?
Friend?
