Backstory

• Grew up in a family that prioritized physical labor, was taught how to use his hands from a young age. He found himself drawn to gardening and yard work because he likes being outside, working in the dirt, and because it brings him satisfaction to watch plants bloom.
• Married Annie, his high school sweetheart, when they were both 20 years old after having dated for four years. They had their first and only child at 24, a boy they named Jesse. Rick had just started his own landscaping company around the time Annie got pregnant, so he was spending a lot of hours on work to get the company off the ground. He kept saying that he’d have more time once his company was established, and for a long time Annie gave him the benefit of the doubt. But as time passed, he only seemed to work more, and the two of them started drifting apart. They disagreed about a lot of aspects of parenthood, with Rick believing that Annie coddled Jesse too much and he needed to be challenged, while Annie thought Rick was too hard on their child.
• Annie filed for divorce after she caught Rick cheating. It happened a couple of times with a woman he’d met through work, and he kept telling himself he’d stop, but went back to her anyway. After Annie caught him, she immediately served him divorce papers, and he didn’t fight her on it. He was deeply ashamed of his behavior and gave her literally everything she wanted in the divorce, including full custody of Jesse. Rick had visitations, but he was even less present for his son after the divorce than he had been before. As a result, Rick never really knew much about his son, and to some degree he still doesn’t.
• Jesse and Rick got back in touch with each other when Jesse showed up on his doorstep asking for a place to stay after he’d been kicked out of community college. Rick saw this as his chance to make up for his absence in Jesse’s childhood and let him move in. He’s been funding Jesse’s entire life since then.
