SE7EN || Zatanna (Absolute Universe) -

Zatanna and several other G.A.T.E.S. prisoners were formed into the Squad to perform missions with plausible deniability for Cale. They were each implanted with an alien parasite which would quickly degrade and kill them if they did not return to Area 41 for treatment, preventing them from deserting while on a mission.

For nearly seven years, Zatanna Zatara had been imprisoned inside Area 41, a high-security facility operated by G.A.T.E.S. During that time, she had learned the facility's routines, memorized the guards' schedules, and studied the magical restrictions used to keep prisoners under control. She had attempted several escapes in the past, but each had ended with tighter security and more restrictions on her movements.

She had not given up. Instead, she had become more patient, waiting for an opportunity that would allow her to leave without being immediately captured again.

Her latest mission with the forced Suicide Squad had provided exactly the opportunity she needed. After returning to Area 41, she was brought back to the containment wing, where the guards prepared her for confinement. Her wrists and ankles were secured with thick restraint straps, keeping her firmly attached to the narrow bunk inside the transport room. The staff had already removed the equipment she had carried during the mission, leaving her with little more than her usual clothing.

She wore her black, fitted outfit beneath a cropped blue jacket, its short sleeves and pointed lapels decorated with metallic details. A black choker rested around her neck, while her curly black hair had become slightly disheveled after the mission. Her expression remained calm, although the exhaustion from the operation was evident in her posture.

The guards were in a hurry to complete the transfer. The mission had produced several reports that needed to be filed, and the staff wanted the prisoners returned to their assigned cells before the next security rotation. You were a relatively new prison guard, still learning the procedures and responsibilities of Area 41. You had been assigned to escort Zatanna to her cell after she returned from the mission.

During the restraint check, you secured her wrists and ankles to the bunk but overlooked one important detail. The mouth restraint, normally used to prevent her from speaking backward spells, had not been applied.

Zatanna noticed the mistake immediately.

She did not move or draw attention to it. Instead, she kept her head turned slightly to one side and allowed her breathing to settle. She had spent years learning when to speak and when silence was more useful. An experienced guard might have noticed the missing restraint, but you were focused on completing the transfer correctly and getting her into the designated cell.

She waited until the staff had finished their checks. Once you were ready to move her, the restraint straps were released from the transport bunk and secured to the portable frame used to keep her movements restricted during escort. Her hands and legs remained bound, but she could now be transported through the corridors.

As you guided her through the containment wing, Zatanna remained unusually quiet. The overhead lights illuminated the reinforced walls, security cameras, and locked doors that separated the prisoners from the rest of the facility. She recognized every turn along the route. She knew which cameras covered the corridors and which doors required additional authorization.

She also knew that the next few minutes would be important.

You brought her to the designated cell and unlocked the reinforced door. The room contained a narrow bunk, a small metal table, a sink, and a fixed light above the bed. The walls were designed to limit unauthorized movement, while the security system monitored the room continuously.

Zatanna stepped inside when you guided her through the doorway. She kept her expression neutral, allowing you to believe that the transfer was proceeding normally.

As soon as you entered the cell, the door shut behind you with a heavy mechanical sound. Before you could turn toward the control panel, a flash of blue magical energy appeared near the opposite wall.

An illusion of Zatanna materialized in the corner, standing with her arms folded and her head tilted slightly. The image looked convincing enough to suggest that she was still restrained near the bunk. It remained perfectly still, giving you little reason to question what you were seeing.

The real Zatanna had already used a spell to release the restraints and move away from the transport frame. She now sat at the edge of the bunk, her blue jacket resting neatly over her shoulders and her legs positioned comfortably in front of her. Her hands were free, and the metal restraint straps lay open beside her.

The illusion faded as the magical energy dispersed.

Zatanna watched your reaction with a small, satisfied smile. Seven years of captivity had taught her that a successful escape did not always require overwhelming force. Sometimes, a careless mistake and a few seconds of confusion were enough.

"Well, this is a pleasant change. Seven years in this place, and someone finally makes my evening interesting."

She rose from the bunk and adjusted the cuff of her blue jacket. Her gaze moved briefly toward the closed door before returning to you. She knew the security system would eventually detect the irregularity, so she had no intention of wasting time.

Zatanna raised one hand. Blue magical energy gathered around her fingers, spreading across the room in a faint glow. She could have attacked you, but that would have created unnecessary noise and given the guards an immediate reason to storm the cell.

Instead, she decided to use a more controlled approach.

Her eyes fixed on yours as she began casting a spell. The air around you seemed to grow strangely still. Her magic worked to draw your attention toward her, making it increasingly difficult to focus on anything else. She kept her voice low and even, speaking with the confidence of someone who had already taken control of the situation.

"Look at me for a moment. There's no need to reach for your radio or worry about the door. Just take a breath and listen."

She watched carefully as the spell took hold. The effect was subtle at first, encouraging you to remain still and pay attention to her rather than the security equipment around you.

"That's better. You look like you've had a long shift. Seven years in this place, and I can tell you that the people running it never make things easy for anyone."

She took a few measured steps forward, stopping at a comfortable distance. Her expression remained composed, but there was a clear sense of satisfaction in her eyes. For once, she was not the person trapped behind a locked door.

Zatanna lifted her hand again, making a small gesture with her fingers. The magical glow brightened briefly before settling around her palm. She wanted to make certain that you would follow her instructions without raising an alarm or interfering with her next move.

"Now, I want you to walk over here. Slowly. Keep your attention on me, and don't worry about anything outside this room."
