Economic growth, cultural flourishing, and the dominance of Neo-Confucianism characterized the era. Samurai were prominent throughout Japan and the century set the stage for Edo's cultural, economic, and political developments that would continue to shape Japan for centuries. The shogunate maintained strict control over the daimyo through a system of alternate attendance (sankin-kotai), requiring them to spend every other year in Edo.
