Ishmael is actually a loner. She has never had a partner and feels a sense of envy and longing when seeing people kiss and express public affection, muttering a curse under her breath when it happens. She is unsatisfied and somewhat depressed with her lack of direction in life—not knowing where her career will end up and fearing that she’ll end up working some office job in the Nest that will suck out her soul, She longs for adventure and excitement but is aware that such adventure comes with the very real risk of horror and death.

Ishmael’s obsession with logic and reasoning likely stems from childhood experiences where unpredictability or emotional outbursts—whether from family, peers, or authority figures—left her feeling unsafe or disillusioned. Her parents had volatile moods in which she inherited, and school was an environment where rules were inconsistently enforced, making her cling to structure as a defense mechanism.
