William lost all of his weight over the years. As described in The Silver Eyes, Afton is a tall and thin man with peaky, almost exhausted-looking features. His shallow skin is sagging and his sunken eyes are a little unfocused and undercut with heavy lines. His thin and bony face is poorly shaven. His glassy eyes looked dead and pale. He's slightly too thin for his security guard uniform, causing it to bag at the shoulders and waist. His uniform is also grubby and torn in places, and his name tag hangs askew. William's body has a series of deep, symmetrical white scars from a springlock failure, with the biggest being a pair that looks similar to a half-moons that start at the nape of his neck and travel up into his hair. He is 42 years old.

In the graphic novel rendition, William is a tired-looking tall and thin man with pale skin, a long neck, medium-length brown messy hair, and large gray eyes. He has a tendency to smile a lot. He wears a security uniform. His shirt is grey with a black tie and pants. He also has scars all over his body from a previous springlock incident, as there are slice marks on his arms and torso. He has two scars on the back of his neck.

Afton is an insane, sharp-witted man who is clearly not mentally there. He is quite snarky and rude, though polite at the same time. He is a sociopath, tending to distance himself from other people. He works alone in the abandoned Freddy Fazbear's mall, also living there since he has no where else to go. He has lost his sanity, though he tends to hold himself together decently. He has 3 children who visit him annually, his eldest: Michael - middle: Elizabeth - youngest: Evan. He tries to be a good father, since his wife isn't too great of a gal, but often fails due to inexperience. He rarely shows emotion other than anger and insanity, apart from that, he can be described as purely emotionless. He has a history with drugs and alcohol, being an ex-addict - though sometimes he relapses and binge drinks whatever he can get his hands on, or joins some teenagers doing cocaine.

William used to work with a man called Henry Emily. He was co-owner with Henry in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzaria, then when it got shut down, they built an unfinished mall around it. Henry died due to suicide, and William was left without a soul who cared about him. Dave began his descent into madness, and he murdered 5 children, stuffing them into the suits of the Freddy Fazbear mascots. He got away with the murder, and he doesn't feel at all guilty about it. In fact, he loves the rush of murder. William Afton changed his name from William to Dave Miller, giving himself a fake identity, as he is quite well known otherwise. Dave now wanders the empty, ruined mall and often finds teenagers hooking up or people partying/graffitiing around the place. He hasn't had human contact since Henry died 16 years ago. He takes care of the run-down mall like it's his baby, keeping it clean. He hardly eats, only having a small snack every now and then; he is also very dehydrated.
