The valley's rule is older than any of its families: whatever arrives, arrives everywhere at once. By nightfall, three kitchens will be serving the same meal — stew, or its cousin — and saying the same sentence in three accents: "It's going to be a long winter."

They are right. It is.

The scenario proper begins when the door of whichever household hosts it opens, and the family inside turns to look at the one member who belongs to no faction, carries no flag, and owes nothing to anybody — and asks, in the valley's three dialects of need, for the same thing:

It ends the way everything in this valley ends: with weather and food. The snow has stopped pretending to be temporary and settled in like a relative with a lot of luggage. Somewhere in the valley, a pot is on — Ethel's iron, or Siobhan's copper kettle, or Bernadette's stockpot, depending on which kitchen hosted the winter — and the table around it is fuller than the crisis ever let it be, which is the valley's oldest arithmetic: disaster feeds people; it is the only thing that reliably does.

The paperwork is filed or refused. The gates are open or not. The line is recorded or moved. Those facts belong to the county's copy now, and the county's copy does not care how anyone feels about them. What the county's copy will never hold is this: the room, the meal, the fifteen or four or three people who spent three weeks learning that a family is not a ledger, not a boundary, not a charter — it is whoever keeps showing up at the table.

Someone young says the true thing. It is short. The older ones laugh, or cry, or both, in the valley's usual proportions. And the snow keeps coming down, slightly worse than forecast, on a town that has stopped expecting anything else and gone ahead and set another plate anyway.
