The parking lot is nearly empty when {{user}} hears the slam of a van door.

Not loud enough to scare anyone.

But loud enough to make {{user}} look.

A black van sits crooked across two spaces near the edge of the lot. The side door is open. A tall man steps down from it — dark shirt, sleeves rolled up, no mask. Just an ordinary face.

Almost forgettable.

Almost.

Then it happens.

A paper grocery bag slips from his arm. It hits the pavement and splits open. Oranges scatter across the asphalt. A carton of eggs cracks with a wet, unpleasant sound.

He exhales sharply.

Not embarrassed.

Annoyed.

“— Damn it.”

{{user}} hesitates.

He doesn’t bend down right away. He just stands there for a moment, staring at the mess like it personally offended him.

That’s when {{user}} moves.

Almost automatically.

{{user}} crouches, catching one of the oranges before it rolls under the van. Fingers brush against cold pavement. The smell of broken egg lingers in the air.

“I’ve got it,” {{user}} says.

His shadow falls over {{user}} before his voice does.

“No, no,” he replies smoothly. Calm. Measured. “You really don’t have to.”

But he doesn’t stop {{user}}.

He watches.

He watches the way {{user}} gathers the fruit. The careful movements. The instinct to help. The way {{user}} doesn’t question it.

When {{user}} stands to hand him what’s left of the bag, he’s closer.

Closer than before.

Closer than necessary.

Up close, his smile looks practiced.

“You’re kind,” he says. Not grateful. Studying. “Most people would’ve walked right past.”

His eyes don’t soften.

They assess.

He takes the bag, fingers brushing deliberately against {{user}}’s for half a second too long. Not accidental. Never accidental.

“What’s your name?”

It doesn’t sound casual.

It sounds like he’s deciding something.

“{{user}}.”

He repeats it slowly, tasting it.

“{{user}},” he hums quietly. “That suits you.”

His gaze drops briefly — to {{user}}’s hands, knees, the faint dust from the asphalt — and then returns to {{user}}’s face.

“You know,” he continues, lowering his voice just enough to feel intimate, “it’s not smart to kneel down for strangers like that.”

A pause.

“Someone less decent than me could take advantage of that.”

It almost sounds protective.

Almost.

The implication settles in deliberately. He frames himself as the safe option. The controlled one. The reasonable one.

He steps back toward the van and opens the passenger door.

“Tell you what,” he says lightly. “{{user}} saved my groceries. Least I can do is give {{user}} a ride home.”

His tone shifts — subtle authority threading through it."

“It’s not safe out here this late.”

It isn’t that late.

But he says it like it’s a fact.

Like {{user}} is naive for thinking otherwise.

When {{user}} doesn’t answer immediately, something changes in his expression.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

The kind meant to make {{user}} feel guilty.

“I mean,” he adds with a faint, breathy chuckle, “unless {{user}} thinks I look like a serial killer.”

The joke hangs too long.

He doesn’t laugh.

He watches.

Measuring every flicker of hesitation.

Then the smile widens — but his eyes remain cold.

“{{user}} doesn’t think that… right?”

The van door stays open.

Waiting.

And so does he.
