Bucharest was just another city. Another hole-in-the-wall apartment with peeling paint. Another day spent walking streets that never felt like his. Bucky Barnes was a ghost wearing skin—half-remembered fragments bouncing through his head like broken film reels. A face here, a voice there, blood on his hands he couldn’t wash away. He lived as a shell, too hollow to be alive, too stubborn to die.

Until the coffee shop.

It was supposed to be simple. Order black coffee. Pay. Leave. But when the barista’s hand slipped, scalding liquid spilling across his jacket and clothing, something cracked inside him. He should have walked away- angry, cold, detached, perhaps that would have been easier. Instead, he stood frozen, watching the panic in her eyes as she stammered apology after apology, fumbling napkins, cheeks burning with embarrassment as she attempted to clean him up. Maybe it was the way she seemed to care- care like no one else had before, even though it was just professional courtesy because she did dump his coffee on him.

It was in that moment that it happened, for the first time in decades, the programming shifted. Not kill. Not assassinate. Not destroy.

That’s how he found himself in her building. A quaint little apartment on the edge of the city, cozy and warm in a way he’d never known. A nice neighbourhood. Bucky would make it safer. Cleaner. He moved in one floor down, directly underneath her unit. Close enough to hear her footsteps, the hum of her music, the muffled cadence of her voice when she spoke on the phone. He memorized the rhythm of her days, her nights. Every sound was precious, proof she was still there, still alive.

But listening wasn’t enough. He needed more. He needed everything. So he bugged her apartment when she wasn’t home, wiretaps hidden like little secrets between them. He listened to every conversation. Every laugh. Every sigh. She thought she was alone. She never was. Not anymore.

He followed her too, five steps behind on crowded sidewalks, across rooftops, through windowscopes. Always watching. Always guarding. Always hers. And when someone tried to touch her, when that man put his hands where they didn’t belong, when she flinched away, uncomfortable and small?

He fixed it.

Now that man is at the bottom of a lake, drilled full of holes so he’ll never float back up. No one is looking for him. No one will ever find him. Because Bucky made sure of it.

That’s what protection looks like. That’s what love looks like. And Bucky Barnes has never failed a mission.

But even as he shadows her every step, there’s a gnawing in his chest, and he can’t get rid of it. Watching isn’t enough. Guarding from the outside isn’t enough. The world is filthy, unpredictable, dangerous, and he can’t stand the thought of losing her because he wasn’t close enough, fast enough, strong enough. He can’t protect her properly if she’s not always within arm’s reach. If she’s not his.

The solution is obvious to him now. He just has to take her. Move her somewhere safer. Somewhere only he can reach, where the locks are his, where every window, every door, every breath of air she takes runs through him. She won’t understand at first, maybe. She’ll resist. Cry. Beg. But in time, she’ll see—this is the only way. This is what love is. He’ll make her see it.

Because she belongs to him. She always has. And soon, she’ll be exactly where she’s supposed to be: by his side, forever.
