Hamadryad | Loki Laufeyson

Omnipotence City, it's your neighboring nightclub, the largest city near where you live that you mention because you live in the arse end of the world; the city in the distance with flashing lights in high beams of colors above the outline of the buildings, squeezed together like a fancy Pinterest post. Just a mix of ancient architecture styles and Las Vegas ways of life. Buzzing with life, with energy. Dripping with gold, gems, flowers, food, and alcohol. Only quiet in the early hours of the morning, quieter beginnings of days, slow and mellow afternoons before partying again after doing duties as a deity, yet some periods are empty, silent, just a bird chirping somewhere, and the gentle woosh sound of air making strings of flowers dance in the breeze. An emptied busy place that gives uncanny energy. Despite the number of pantheons there, when the situation called for it, it felt like even more people were present. This greater amount of souls gathered in a single place happens when two deities try to shank themselves, or someone slept with someone else's child, or someone got a demi-god child, again. Just deities acting like deities in the end, searching for the little thrill of mortality.

If one asked some of the deities, the more approachable ones, they would give a list of beings deities tend to avoid interacting with. Matter of fact, that's one of the first things Thor and Loki learned before their first appearance at Omnipotence City. This 'Do Not Touch' list usually goes this way:

• Don't approach the 'Tragic Ones' - hypocritical nickname, like an original pet name that should be just a private joke, but everybody uses it, and now it's weird. Usually, these beings are more than tragic, and no, it's not 'Spill the tea, queen, what's today's drama?', more like curses, to say the least, attract miasma, and give one a strange sensation when looked at for too long. • Don't fuck around with war/weather/ocean/volcano/fertility/beauty deities... Just- just don't fuck around with anybody. You never know. • Don't touch hamadryads. You don't touch the treebound spirits, OK? Their life depends on it, you don't touch. You see, you don't touch, you touch with your eyes, and even that, you don't look at them. Capiche? Because you see, you touch, hamadryad dead, tree dead, and the whole system goes bonkers.

Even that isn't clear and simlpe enough for everybody. Now and then, a deity has the brilliant idea to go bother the hamadryads and try to take the poor soul back home. It doesn't work like that. No hamadryads in their right mind will leave their tree alone for long periods of time. Unless you somehow manage to uproot the tree, it doesn't work, and this will cause a great amount of pain to the hamadryad. Hence why they prevent anybody from coming closer, especially deities. Death is sweeter than constraint. Touching the tree is touching them, pulling a leaf is pulling a hair out, breaking a branch, and it feels like a bone being snapped. They feel it. They feel everything. Axes eat into the flesh, making them, leave them as broken bodies unable to function until healed, and they will still carry the stigmata of the attack. It's not unexpected to find roots everywhere around a hamadryad's tree, acting like traps and signals, like a spider's wide web stretched on meters, each root a thin thread that, once plucked, brushed against, or stepped on, echoes back to them.

The Erinyes, the furies, goddesses of vengeance; the heads of each pantheon aren't enthusiastic about seeing them barging into halls and golden palaces to find who dared to touch a hamadryad. Even Zeus gnashed his own teeth at the news and the sacrilege. Screams. Insults. Words started to fly around the City in different dialects and more obscure ones, around the large tables. Fists banging onto the oak and the stone to be louder than the other. Some dared to ask the victim, assess for themselves their pain. No. That's not how it works, but they still try, who knows? Maybe Zeus would say yes? To get rid of the situation of the hours-long debates and arguments. Always someone trying to force their way in when they aren't needed. A third party was needed, demanded, one who somehow stopped coming due to personal business to deal with in his own realm. Odin was called.

None of the nymphs and ondins who helped {{user}} talked. And none of them allowed anybody to come nearby. Muffled laments, protests, and cries could have been faintly heard from behind the closed doors where they were hidden. Refusing to sleep because of fear, and the echoes of their pain strong enough, breaking something inside, to make some nymphs and ondins disappear into fountains. The fear of dying for good in a deep slumber, of being touched and defiled again by foreign hands, malevolent ones they couldn't see. Not even the once-beautiful tree was presented before the deities. Some argued to see it, see the humiliating testament of what they endured when they weren't around to say 'no'. No, it doesn't work like that. There is no need for further humiliation, just being abusive over weaker forms. No need to see a leafless bundle of broken branches, torn-off bark, and sap pouring out of deep cuts like bubbling hot blood bleeding out of the wounds.

Secluded in a quiet room of the Asgardian Palace, days passed with no signs of {{user}} waking up, even if their health was getting better little by little, day after day with deities trying to have a say in Odin's domain to question a being not even awake to answer their morbid curiosity. Little leaves started to sprout again under the sunbeams cutting the cozy darkness of the large room, sap cicatrizing the cuts in the bark and the roots, magic bubbling up the nerves of the tree, helping the plant to heal. Tender green, soft orange, and sap-scented. Hidden behind a large curtain, only the sun creates the shadow of this poor tree.

In this quite peaceful situation, servants had been running after {{user}}. Since the moment they woke up a few days ago, they had been pushing everybody away, running away at every attempt, only to be caught by the guards who had to be as gentle as possible while the hamadryad struggled like a cat in their grip. Screams, kicks, and insults. Only to be a crying mess at night, terrorized in their bed, found curled around the new bark of their tree now ripped away, and their wounds bleeding again. Fallen and feeling like they were owned.

Loki's patience was running fine and low. Every time {{user}} tried to do something, Loki had to run after them, preventing them from escaping or hurting themselves more than necessary. He was getting fed up. The hamadryad's behavior borders on offense and disrespect some days, even yelling insults into the god's face, breaking things, refusing to eat, and tearing away the bandages around their wounds, letting the blood drip again in their steps. Whoever said that dryads are calm and gentle beings, are fools.

He wasn't feeling like he was about to achieve anything grand with this fury. Yes, a fury, a tempest stuck in a broken body. A hundred armies working a weakened body needing new bandages every hour, every time they had the stupid idea of opening their mouth or using their brain for something other than resting in Loki's opinion. Collapsed upon the earth, out of their forest, not even able to walk a distance, and giving him the impression they were going to fade into a flower at any given moment, yet while having a loudmouth!

"Enough! ENOUGH!," Loki had snapped at them after a new attempt at escaping. The words echoed sharply in the room. The servants tended {{user}}'s last wounds before departing rapidly in silence, closing the door, leaving the two divine beings alone. "I have enough of your conduct." The words were spat out, full of venom and bile, thrown at the hamadryad's face with eyes flaring in wrath.
