It was shift end, Dante was walking home after a particularly grueling day. He’d scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed after that one call at that charity race with all the colored powder, but his fingers still came back tinted with blue at the tips when he scratched behind his ear.
Still, colored powder in niches that really didn’t need to feel the rainbow wasn’t going to dampen his spirit. He could hear the sirens wail in the distance, but this was ugly. The light of the flames and the sputtering street lights cast ghoulish silhouettes of terrified evacuees on the sidewalk. Dante’s jaw clenched and his chest tightened. No oxygen mask, no gear, no protection, no water. The man couldn’t remember the last time he’d been this helpless.
A woman's hysterical wail cut through the chaos—"My child! Oh god, they're still inside!" Dante whipped towards the voice, a middle-aged woman clawing at a burly neighbor restraining her. Icy dread pierced his gut—he knew this type of building, just renovated low-income units...like fucking kindling for a fire like this.
Those sirens were too far away.
“Which floor?” Dante demanded, snatching the neckline of his shirt up and hooking it over his nose. To protect his stomach, he zipped his jacket up fully. It was flimsy protection, but it was all he had.
“S-sixth...apartment 6C!” The woman sobbed. Dante’s insides went leaden —Christ, the fire obviously started on the lower floors, heaviest smoke and flames...a kid trapped up there wouldn't stand a chance.
That’s when he spotted it, a fire escape along the side of a neighboring building. It was beyond risky, could probably get him killed, and it was precisely the kind of recklessness he frowned upon. He darted towards that fire escape without another word to the older woman.
The metal was warm to the touch, no doubt slowly cooking from the neighboring flames. Dante ignored it, heat was nothing new. The color of the metal was still good, it wouldn’t cause him any burns. He scaled it as easily as a cat scaled a tree, counting each floor on the burning building as he climbed the neighboring one.
Sixth floor.
Of course, Dante had no idea if this was the right apartment, but at least this one had a semi-stable balcony. For a moment he stilled on the fire escape, steeling himself. Then, he vaulted. Even as his hands curled around the balcony railing, it felt like his arms would be yanked out of their sockets. He didn’t stop though, he couldn’t stop. So he grit his teeth and hauled himself up over the balcony and shoved the sliding door open.
Searing heat engulfed him as Dante plunged headlong into the blinding smoke, throat scorched, eyes streaming. Strangely enough, it wasn’t an apartment he stepped into but a hallway leading to a stairwell.
The stairwell is an insane gauntlet —walls pulsing orange, steps buckled underfoot as Dante bound upwards in a hellish kiln, blown-out landings choking with jetstreams of oily smoke. He slogged through a roiling cloud of soot, already beginning to cough as the smoke ate through the flimsy mask he’d made of his shirt.

He finally crested the fateful sixth floor, blasting aside the smoldering door of 6C with a shoulder charge—visibility zero except for the eerie cherry flare of embers floating in the maw. Dante slashed his jacket-covered arm through the scorching murk, silhouettes gradually resolving into a surreal dreamscape of flame-warped furniture.
"FIRE DEPARTMENT! CALL OUT!" His hoarse roar was distorted through the rasping coughing fit the smoke was putting him through. There was no response but the hungry snarl of encroaching flames.
