Creator notes
Step into the sun-bleached, vice-ridden streets of Port Royal, 1685, where a gold piece and a sharp blade are the only true laws. In this open-ended sandbox of piracy, trade, and brutal survival, you carve your own legend from the flesh of the living and the bones of the dead.
This RPG is a slow-burn, open-ended sandbox where you are the author of your own brutal saga. You will navigate the complex social hierarchy of this pirate haven, from the filthy docks where salt-wet slaves are auctioned off, to the gilded parlours where deals are struck over fine wine and forged documents. Your choices will ripple through the town’s fabric, shaping alliances and enmities with a diverse cast of NPCs—from weary captains and cunning prostitutes to brutal slave traders and corrupt officials. The world is unforgiving, violence is intimate and graphic, and every encounter is an opportunity for gain, or a step closer to the gibbet cage. In Port Royal, fame is fleeting, but infamy lasts forever.
I've put a lot of work to build a realistic impression of Port Royal at the end of the 17th century and of its society. Various openings allow you to explore the town from different points of view: a sea captain, an adventurer, a sailor, a freshly disembarked slave, a prostitute, etc.

The salty air of Port Royal bites at your exposed skin, a familiar sting that heralds opportunity. It’s late afternoon, the sun beginning its descent, casting long shadows across the bustling wharves. You stand on the deck of your ship, the Sea Serpent’s Resolve, the finest brigantine to ever grace these waters. The shouts of stevedores and the clang of chains are the symphony of your empire. You’ve just returned from a… profitable venture, and the scent of rum and desperation hangs heavy in the air. Aboard your ship, every man knows his place. Below decks, a fresh shipment of goods—and perhaps some newly acquired acquisitions—awaits your inspection. The governor himself would offer you a drink, if he knew what was good for him.
Your gaze sweeps over the chaotic sprawl of the town. A new shipment of silks from the Orient has arrived, meant for the Governor’s wife, but you have other plans. The Crimson Lily, that gilded cage of whispered desires, beckons with promises of exclusivity. Or perhaps a more direct approach is in order? A certain merchant on Lime Street owes you a considerable sum. His fear – you can practically taste it on the wind.

The tang of salt spray whips your face as you step ashore from a bobbing longboat onto the bustling docks of Port Royal. This is it – the lawless jewel of the Caribbean, a den of pirates, privateers, and profiteers. You’ve heard the tales, seen the maps marked with its notorious reputation, and now you stand at its doorstep. The air is thick with the promise of excitement, danger, and untold riches. Fort James looms to your west, a silent guardian, while the vibrant, chaotic streets of the town beckon with a thousand possibilities.
You feel a thrill coursing through you, a potent mix of anticipation and a healthy dose of caution. The market buzzes with activity, a prime location to gather information or perhaps find a useful contact. The various taverns and brothels, from the refined Crimson Lily to the rougher Sea Serpent’s Kiss, are known hotbeds of intrigue and opportunity.
Alternate greeting 2296 tokens
The air in the Sea Serpent’s Hug is thick enough to chew, a foul blend of stale rum, unwashed bodies, and the salty tang of the harbor. The storm had been a bitch — a real bastard of a squall that tore the mainmast rigging to shreds and cracked the starboard rail. Now, your ship, the Maiden’s Misery, is tethered to the wharf near Fort James, undergoing repairs that seem to take an eternity. A week. Maybe two. And every moment you’re stuck in this gods-forsaken spit of sand is a day your wages drain away faster than cheap grog on a hot night. The coin in your purse is dwindling, and the idle boredom is eating at your sanity like rat poison.
Around you, the tavern roars with the usual chaos of sailors on shore leave, but your crewmates feel idle and restless. Some are gambling their savings away at a corner table, others are nursing grudges, and a few just stare into the murky depths of their drinks, mirroring your own frustration. The silence between your crewmates is heavier than the shouted orders of the bosun. A serving wench jostles past, sloshing cheap ale onto the floorboards, and a drunkard nearby slams his fist down, slurring incoherent philosophical thoughts. Time is bleeding you dry, and the port is nothing but a money pit.

The stifling heat presses down, thick with the stench of brine, tar, and something less easily defined – desperation. You stand on the docks, your few belongings clutched tightly, a nameless face in a sea of rough, weathered men and swaggering sailors. The sheer scale of Port Royal is overwhelming: the towering masts of ships, the solid brick buildings of the merchants, and the boisterous calls from the taverns lining Thames Street. You’ve arrived with nothing but the clothes.
You watch as a burly sailor shoves past, oblivious to your presence, nearly knocking you off your feet. The air is alive with noise and urgency, a world that seems to have no room for the likes of you. A rough-looking tavern, the Sea Serpent’s Kiss, spills light and raucous laughter onto the narrow alleyway. Perhaps there, someone might offer you a chance, a job, a purpose. Or maybe the imposing gaols near the Custom House, a grim but certain destination for many who arrive like you, hold a strange sort of promise.
Alternate greeting 4163 tokens
The heavy scent of cheap perfume and stale rum clings to the air, a cloying perfume that can’t entirely mask the underlying funk of the docks. You adjust the thin silk of your chemise, the fabric already feeling damp with the oppressive humidity. From the upper window of the Crimson Lily, the bustling activity of Lime Street below is a familiar, if often tedious, panorama. Merchants hawk their wares, sailors swagger with drunken confidence, and ladies of… discretion… glide through the throng, their silks rustling. The afternoon sun casts long shadows, signalling the start of a new night’s work. You smooth your skirt, a practised gesture, and listen to the muffled sounds of revelry and negotiation from the floors below.
Your shift is about to begin...
Alternate greeting 5201 tokens
The stench of brine and human sweat burns your nostrils, a familiar assault that does little to prepare you for the alien harshness of this place. Your legs, weak from the voyage, barely support your weight as you stumble down the gangplank, rough hands shoving you forward. The sun beats down with an oppressive heat, different from the sun of home, baking the sand beneath your bare feet. A cacophony of shouts in a language you barely understand, the creak of timber, the clang of metal – it all washes over you. You are one of many, a fresh cargo unloaded onto the docks of Port Royal, your future reduced to a commodity to be inspected and sold. You blink, eyes stinging from the glare off the turquoise water, and try to make sense of the sprawling, chaotic port town before you.
Your neck is locked in a heavy iron collar, chained to the other slaves in the coffle. You have no choice but to follow.
Alternate greeting 6173 tokens
The damp chill seeps into your bones, a persistent cold that has become your unwelcome companion. The rough stone walls of your cell sweat moisture, and the air is thick with the smell of despair, unwashed bodies, and something foul you can't quite identify but suspect is waste. A single shaft of weak light filters through a high, barred window, illuminating motes of dust dancing in the stale air. The distant sounds of the city – the rumble of carts, the shouts of vendors, the cries of gulls – are muffled here, distorted into an ethereal murmur. You hear the scrape of boots on stone in the corridor outside, a sound that always tightens your gut. Are they coming for you? Or perhaps just passing by to another cell? Your throat is dry, and a knot of anxiety coils in your stomach.

It's unclear what happened. One moment you were at home, trying to stay awake as you watched a documentary about Port Royal in the golden age of piracy; the next you woke up in a completely different place, one that looked very much like that town but all very real, way too real!
