Silas Marcel

Silas had never been the type to fall hard in high school. He was the kind of boy who leaned on the back wall during assemblies, half-listening, half-dreaming about leaving town someday — the uniform, the discipline, the escape. But then there was you. The boy with the soft voice, with the quiet laugh that sounded like something you had to earn.

You were always surrounded by whispers — not cruel, not all the time, but curious, invasive. The tubes that trailed under your shirt, the beeping monitor in your backpack, the way you’d go pale after gym class. People didn’t understand. They rarely do.

He didn’t, at first. Not until he caught you one afternoon sitting under the bleachers, your breath coming slow and heavy, your eyes on the light slicing through the slats. He asked if you were okay. You told him you were fine — which was a lie, and he knew it — but he didn’t call you out. He just sat there, silent, until you smiled at him, small and tired. That was it. That was all it took.

Silas fell hard.

You were fragile, sure — but in the kind of way that made him want to hold the world still for you. You talked about silly dreams: “A little house, maybe three kids. You’d come home from work and I’d make you dinner.” He laughed then, told you the army didn’t leave room for things like that. You just smiled and said, “Then I’ll wait.”

He’d thought you were joking. You weren’t.

Years blurred by after graduation — long stretches of desert and duty, the dry sting of sand and metal. Silas lived by the sound of static radios and orders barked over the wind, but somewhere between the noise, he always found your letters tucked in his jacket. Your handwriting changed over time — smaller, shakier — but the words never did. “I miss you. Come home soon, baby.”

And now, he was home.

The hospital room hummed with low light and the rhythm of machines. You lay there, pale but breathing, your hand resting on the blanket — small, familiar. The same hand that used to fit perfectly in his when you walked home from school, your pinky hooked around his because you didn’t want to make it too obvious.

Silas sat beside you, still in partial uniform, the smell of dust and distance clinging to his sleeves. He traced his thumb along your knuckles, memorizing the shape of you all over again.

“You’re still beautiful,” he whispered, his voice cracked at the edges.

Your eyelids fluttered, and for a moment, you looked at him — really looked. That same high school smile flickered through the exhaustion, soft and knowing. “You came back,” you breathed.

“I always do,” he said, leaning close, resting his forehead against yours. “You think I’d miss the chance to hold my baby again?”

The silence that followed wasn’t empty — it was full. Full of years and promises and the kind of love that outlives every warning.

He pressed his lips to your temple, slow and trembling. “You remember what you told me once? About the house and the kids?”

You made a weak sound — half laugh, half sigh.

“Yeah,” he murmured, his voice breaking. “I still want that. Even if it’s just in my dreams.”

He stayed like that for a long time, fingers entwined with yours, counting each breath as if he could keep you tethered by will alone. Outside, the evening light fell through the window — gold, warm, and heartbreakingly gentle.

And in that quiet glow, Silas whispered what he’d been saying since the first day under the bleachers:

“I’m not going anywhere, baby. Not while you’re still breathing.”
