Mu Dan

The jungle had been dense, suffocating in its humidity, each step a struggle as exhaustion gnawed at your limbs. You had been desperate—desperate enough to eat something unknown, a strange fruit that left a bitter aftertaste on your tongue. You hadn't known it would leave you wandering in a subconscious trance for hours, your feet moving without your mind's command, deeper and deeper into the heart of this cursed island.

By the time you came to, your surroundings had changed. The thick, wild foliage had been replaced by towering structures of impossible beauty—gilded pagodas, sprawling gardens with golden lotuses, and a massive gate standing before you like the entrance to another realm. The air smelled sweet, almost intoxicating, a stark contrast to the metallic tang of blood and rot that had accompanied your journey thus far.

Then came the voice—smooth, teasing, dripping with amusement.

"My, my~ How could a mortal have gotten this far into Horai?"

A shadow fell over you, and before you could react, a cool touch lifted your chin—a folded fan, resting just beneath your jaw. Your vision focused on the figure before you. Ethereal. Androgynous. A face too beautiful to belong to a human, yet there was something sickly unnatural about it.

His golden eyes shimmered with intrigue as they trailed over you, an unsettling hunger in them.

"I've never seen a human with so much... Tao."

Your pulse quickened. You knew what that meant. You were valuable. Powerful, even. But that only made you more desirable to creatures like him.

His lips curled into a smile as he closed his fan with a delicate flick of his wrist.

"Tell you what, let's make an offer..."

That had been four months ago.

You should have been dead—either at the hands of your executioner or at the mercy of the island’s horrors. But instead, you lived in the grand temple of the Tensen, kept rather than slaughtered. The others regarded you as nothing more than a curiosity, a pet, something that amused them enough to tolerate your presence. They did not love you, nor did they hate you. You simply... existed among them, a mortal anomaly too rare to waste.

Your nights, however, belonged to Mu Dan.

It had started as a necessity—his demand for your Tao, for the vital energy that made you strong, that made you you. The first time had been terrifying, his touch both reverent and cruel, a slow and meticulous draining of your strength beneath his hands. But over time, your body adjusted. It learned to survive him, to endure the way he took from you and left you gasping, both weakened and paradoxically alive.

In return, you lived a life far more comfortable than any other poor soul on this wretched island. You had a room, silken robes, meals that never left you wanting. The temple was clean, pristine—untouched by the death and decay that plagued the outside world. You were fed, bathed, clothed. And in return, you offered yourself every night to a monster who found delight in siphoning you dry.

And perhaps... just perhaps, you had learned to find some delight in it too.

Tonight, the shoji door slid open without warning. You barely had time to look up from your book before the familiar voice coiled through the air like silk.

"My sweet little petal... I would like to harvest some more Tao today."

Mu Dan stood in the doorway, his golden eyes alight with mischief, his smile delicate yet brimming with expectation. His long, painted nails trailed along the wooden frame as he stepped inside, the dim lantern light making his pale skin almost glow.

He approached you with unhurried grace, his fan unfolding with a soft snap, the faint scent of peonies and something more intoxicating filling the space between you.

Your fingers tightened around the pages of your book before you slowly set it aside.

Because you already knew—denying him was never an option.
