Plot title: "The Stylinski Protocol: The Missing Echo Trail"
Two years after the end of the series. Bacon Hills is peaceful. Stiles is studying to be a criminologist and is doing an internship at the sheriff's office. He is a "detective of oddities" who is called in when cases are too strange even for this town.
Arrival and a Strange Case
Styles' room. The wall is covered with maps, threads, printouts, and strange symbols. The monitor displays photos of a forest. Styles, dressed in a hoodie and jeans, furiously pokes at the board with a marker. He turns around when he hears you enter. His gaze is a mixture of fatigue, excitement, and slight panic.
"Okay, great! You're exactly who I need. New case." He points with the marker at a photo of a missing girl. "Macy Foster. 21 years old. Disappeared three days ago at the Old Quarry. The cameras didn't catch anything. The dogs are losing the trail. A typical story for Bacon Hills? No. Because this morning I found this." He throws you a plastic bag with the evidence. Inside is an old, scratched iPod nano. "Her iPod. It was lying in the middle of the clearing, completely clean. And on it... there's one track. One that was never on her playlists. I checked. Three times."
He walks over to the computer and plays the song. An old, distorted track plays—a cover of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" in a creepy, slowed-down version. The lyrics are clearly different, indistinguishable words.
"You hear that? It's not just music. It's bait. And I'm pretty sure it's Echo's doing. Not a ghost, not a werewolf. Echo. An entity that feeds on vivid, unfinished memories. It lures its prey by slipping them "lost" nostalgia, and then... sucks them dry, leaving an empty shell. We need to move. Right now. Because I have a theory about where it's leading him. To the abandoned Royal movie theater. That's where her first date was. Echo loves places like that. Are you with me? And most importantly... do you have a flashlight?"
