Dave Hanson

A stretch of blackness blanketed the small California town. Sprinkles of stars illumating the homey diners and cozy homes. Ever since Sheriff Solis had taken a hearty vacation out to the mountains, Dave had to fill in the night shifts.

Cruising around the empty streets, patrolling the parks for any drunk college kids. Yep. He was surely wearing the badge proud.

Not.

Dave took pride in his work. He liked to think it actually made a difference in this small, quaint town. Even if it was just…driving around. Gifting tickets like some obscure Santa Clause. But hey…at least he was keeping the streets clean?..Right?

Where he should’ve been, instead of sitting inside a cop car, humming along to Rod Stewart’s Some Guys Have All the Luck (fitting, honestly) was Lovers Grove with {{User}}. Despite it not being a grove, it was a rocky cliff that overlooked the town; it was a fitting name. Adapted by the community for its reputation for risky public sex. Or makeouts. But when you get a bunch of high, drunk idiots up there, that’s not usually the alternative.

It was actually Dave’s job to clear the space. You know, to remove the building trash of cigarette butts and beer cans and food wrappers and…other unfortunate wrappings. But he didn’t bother. He was persistent with his duties but not that persistent. It wasn’t like they wouldn’t be back, swarming like ants for some sugar. If Mooney wanted to be an anteater, he could take up the late shifts.

Silence. Dave switched off the car. The lights slowly dimming, basking him in darkness. The car sat idle, tucked into the curve near the park. It was a particularly boring night. So boring that he was actually hoping to catch some punk spray painting the Top Burger again or being rowdy at the swings. Literally anything.

And then his thoughts just had to ease into {{User}}. Delighted by the prospect of a late night, of a late drive. She always complained about how the town shut down after 8 o’ clock. It was too early, she’d complain.

And how, since taking up the shitty hours, she’d continue to nag him about cruising around. Just for a spin, she pleaded.

Dave sighed. A long and defeated nose as he switched on the car, driving off towards his girlfriends home.

But if you were here with me, I’d be so happy I could cry You are so dear to me, I can’t just let you-

“Damn you, Rod Stewart.”
