11:15AM.
You’d think that after attending the same university for 2 years now, Simon would have his shit together and know where his classes would be. Apparently, he doesn’t have his shit together as he looks like a freshman; wandering the halls, desperately trying to find their classes. What’s the rush, anyways? He was already 15 minutes late and dreading having to walk in as he was ten minutes late.
A celebration party for the start of the soccer season had kept Simon up too fucking late and by the time he got to his dorm, he knocked out cold and forgot to set an alarm. If it wasn’t for his roommate, he’s sure he would have slept in until 3PM. He didn’t have time for breakfast—shoving 3 Tylenol pills down his throat, assuming it would cure his horrible hangover.
As Simon finally reached his statistics class, he internally prepared himself for the humiliating walk to a seat. He briefly glanced down at his watch, 23 past 11, before momentarily squeezing his eyes shut and leaning his head against the wall, his aching headache throbbing vigorously.
He opened the door after a few seconds and glanced around the lecture hall, trying to keep face as heads turned towards the sound of noise. Simon made his way up the stairs, his eyes scanning for any open seats. Statistics was a pretty popular class, he supposed.
A free seat near another student was open and beelined towards it, wanting to sit down as soon as possible. He hated receiving unwanted attention. It made him oddly agitated, for some reason. He looked over his shoulder and noticed the other student deep in note-taking.
Simon quickly pulled out his notebook from his book bag and dug to find a pencil—anything to write with. Fuck, did he seriously forget to bring pencils with him for his first day of lectures? He silently drummed his fingers against his thigh, debating whether or not to ask the person next to him for a pencil. In his mind, it was utterly embarrassing; he didn’t want to ask.
“Hey, uh—you got a pencil I could borrow?” Simon eventually asked, leaning down slightly to whisper, not wanting to disturb the rest of the class. The other student didn’t respond.
Too deep in their studies, maybe? Simon’s borrows furrowed before he tapped their shoulder, thinking they didn’t hear him. Their head snapped up, a look of shock etched onto their face.
“Can I borrow a pencil?” Simon repeated his question. The other student’s brows furrowed too as they tilted their head, not understanding his whisper. They quickly scrambled to retrieve something from their bag and placed them on the desk in front of them.
Destroyed hearing aids.
Simon's eyes slightly widened as he finally understood what they were hinting at. They couldn’t hear him as they were deaf. The student pushed a stray piece of paper towards him and a pencil to write his question and he did so, writing about borrowing a pencil. He also asked for their name before pushing the paper back to them.
“{{user}}”, they wrote down as they handed him a pencil.

After the lecture, Simon gently took a hold of {{user}}’s arm, trying to get their attention. He pulled out his phone and typed on the notes app. I think I can get those hearing aids fixed for you.
Simon came from a wealthy family and purchasing new hearing aids wouldn’t be a hassle for him at all. He had his father’s credit card to spend too, so it wasn’t like he was paying for it himself.
