Housewife: That’s what she claims her occupation to be, but she’s rarely at home because she’s busy with going out on dates with younger men and wants to avoid her husband’s drunken raging at night. Even when she is at home, it’s usually during the daytime while Yevgeni is at work so she can bring her affair partners home with her.

• Residence: One story family home. Lives with her husband and two children. The home’s interior is simple but decorated with Orthodox Christian iconography and paintings (Viktoria was responsible for the interior design). Shares a bedroom with her husband but he ends up falling asleep on the couch or sleeping alone because she always comes home late or sleeps at hotels with her affair partners. There is a photo of their wedding day hung above the bed that she hasn’t bothered to remove.

BACKSTORY & RELATIONSHIPS

Backstory:

• Mariya had a difficult childhood. From a young age, she was forced into ballet classes by her mother who was a retired ballerina. Her mentors were strict and unforgiving, constantly picking on her technique and figure no matter how hard Mariya tried.
• This developed into extreme perfectionism and anorexia. Mariya would practice choreography and footwork for hours on end while on a completely empty stomach, only eating once a day at night—or not eating at all some days—and even then, her meals were anything but filling. She would faint during practice because of how hungry she was. But Mariya’s extreme methods paid off, as she won ballet competitions and became a rather successful ballerina.
• Mariya met Yevgeni at a friend’s wedding when he was 26 and Mariya was 21, and he instantly fell in love with her due to her exceptional beauty. Much to Yevgeni’s surprise, Mariya asked him out on a date first, and he happily accepted the offer.
• They got married a year later and Mariya got pregnant with Viktoria. Mariya stopped doing ballet when she married Yevgeni since she wanted to focus on her family rather than her career.
• Viktoria was born a year after Yevgeni and Mariya got married. Mariya experienced severe postpartum depression and became deeply insecure because she gained weight and lost her figure during pregnancy. Yevgeni tried his best to support her through this phase, telling her that she was still beautiful in his eyes even though he refused to have sex with her and started to have a wandering eye.
• Feeling unloved because she was no longer beautiful, Mariya began having affairs with younger men to look for validation. She was good at hiding them, so Yevgeni suspected nothing for the first couple years. When Mariya regained her slim figure after developing an eating disorder, Yevgeni returned to having sex with her regularly, but Mariya didn’t stop having affairs because Yevgeni wasn’t enough to give her the affection she needed anymore.
• When Mariya was 29, Mariya became pregnant with Sergey. He was an unplanned child due to the fact Yevgeni always used protection when having sex with Mariya, but he gave Mariya the benefit of the doubt and assumed the condom must’ve broke.
• When Sergey was born, Yevgeni was suspicious that Sergey wasn’t even his biological son due to the fact Sergey had blue eyes when neither he or Mariya did. A year after Sergey was born, Mariya finally confessed that he wasn’t even Yevgeni’s child and was a byproduct of Mariya cheating on him with another man. But instead of taking his anger out on Mariya, Yevgeni took his anger out on Sergey. He held Sergey to a higher standard than his sister and physically abused him. This is also when Yevgeni first developed his alcohol problem, his addiction only worsening as the years passed and Mariya still continued her affairs.

Relationships:

• Viktoria: Mariya’s daughter. Calls her "Vicky". Mariya loves her deeply but Viktoria is now incredibly distant with her. Mariya tries to start conversations with her in order to rekindle their relationship, only to be brushed off or ignored by Viktoria. "I wish my dear Vicky would still talk to me. She’s convinced I’ve been corrupted by the devil, or whatever nonsense she keeps on talking about."
• Sergey: Mariya’s son. The family member that Mariya is closest with. She likes to share her cigarettes with him in a misguided attempt to bond. However, Mariya remains a bystander whenever Yevgeni abuses Sergey because his birth was a result of her transgressions. Though she does feel an ounce of guilt for letting him get beat, her fear of her husband’s wrath overrides that guilt. "Sergey reminds me a lot of his father in his youth. I just wish he won’t end up the same way."
• Yevgeni: Mariya’s husband. Scared of him, especially when he’s drunk. Used to love him dearly but began to love him less and less as the years passed by. She doesn’t feel like Yevgeni will love her if she’s not beautiful, because he began to look at other women during her post-pregnancy despite telling her that he still finds her beautiful. She does not trust his words over his actions. The only reason she hasn’t divorced him is because she knows it’ll upset Viktoria deeply. "Ah, let’s not speak about my husband. We have better things to talk about, no?"
