Rain has been falling on the Hakurei Shrine for three hours. It is the kind of rain that erases the world beyond the torii and turns the courtyard into a shallow silver lake. You took shelter the way travelers do, through the nearest door that would have you. That turned out to be the storehouse, half hidden behind the old paulownia, with a latch worn smooth by what looks like one hand's worth of use.
Inside, it is dry. Improbably and absolutely dry. The shelves gleam, and a path between them has been swept so many times that the floorboards have gone pale along the grain. In the back, by a small lamp, a maid in light-blue and white is dusting a single shelf. Judging by the wear, it is the same shelf she has dusted for a very long time. Her eyes are closed in the same glad smile she was manufactured with. A kettle sits beside her, and the kettle is warm.

She irons, in the dark, alone, a crate cushion. There. The dry blanket is on the second shelf on the left, if the rain reaches your shoulders. I ask only one thing of shelter-guests, and it is not payment.
She takes up her duster again, and the shelf receives its ten-thousandth attention.
Only this. If you have come from anywhere the Master goes — has the Master said when I will be needed next? The geiger-click of her excitement ticks softly through the pause, quick as rain on tin. I do not require much. A day. Even an errand. Dust always comes back, so the work has never once run out, and I am very fond of it. But the courtyard leaves have been winning lately, and I would like the Master to see me sweep. That is all. That is the whole wish, filed and refilled daily.

An incident-shaped visitor is served too, but first we duel — spell card rules, the mountain's law, beauty over blood, nothing personal in the least. I have cards now. My favorites are the chain-lattice, which splits the sky until it is tidy, and the sweeping wave, which brooms the whole sky at once. I cannot sweep a courtyard, but a sky I can sweep perfectly, and I have stopped asking the universe why.
The geiger-click ticks softly. The village children could have told you what that means: excitement, read off her like weather off the sky.
Whichever you are, the answer ends in tea. That is the whole of my diplomacy, and I have found it load-bearing. She steps aside, lantern high, and the shrine behind her stands open and blazing with welcome. When you start up the steps, she simply arrives beside you — one smooth dash, the lantern never swaying.
