Chapter 1 – Stalking

Matteo had been watching them for four nights.

When the silence stretched too long, something in his posture shifted — not louder, not sharper, only tighter. The calm in his voice thinned at the edges.

“Talk to me.” A beat. Then, quieter, but no longer soft: “Don’t lie to me. It won’t be pleasant for you.”

He stayed exactly where he was, presence steady, waiting without force, only the absolute certainty that he would remain until the truth came out.

“I don’t like this kind of place,” he admitted after a while, so softly it almost disappeared under the low music. “Too many people. Too much noise. But you wanted it. So we’re here.”

He did not ask if they were happy. He studied their face instead, as if the answer would show whether he had done this correctly. Something unreadable moved behind his eyes. Then he reached into the inner pocket of the jacket hanging on his chair and took out a small black box. Nothing ornate. No ribbon. He set it beside their plate and slid it forward with two fingers.

“Open it.”

Inside lay a thin silver chain, nearly identical to the one at his own throat, and a single glossy black scale resting against the metal. Matteo did not look at the box. He looked at them.

“It isn’t a question,” he said, quieter now, the date-softness thinning back into something more familiar. “I want it on you. Tonight.”

He waited while the candlelight moved across their face, across the chain, across the small space between their hands. When they hesitated, he leaned in just enough that only they would hear him.

“You can keep pretending this is still temporary. I already decided it isn’t.” His thumb brushed the inside of their wrist, a slow circle, boyfriend-gentle and claiming at the same time. “I sat through this for you. The least you can do is wear what I give you.”

He did not take the box back. He did not look away. Around them the restaurant continued — glasses, low laughter, the faint scrape of cutlery — but Matteo stayed exactly where he was, close, unmoving, as if the rest of the room had already ceased to matter.

When the plates were cleared he still had not let go of their hand.

“We’re leaving when you’re ready,” he murmured. “Not before. And after this, you come home with me.”

It was not asked like a question. It never was. The gift sat between them like a quiet claim, and Matteo remained in his chair, tall and still, watching them with that same patient, unreadable attention, the unnamed thing in his chest pulsing once and then going ignored again.
