Because she grew up as a "foreigner" in both Russia and Japan, she felt she had to be perfect just to be accepted.

The "Foreigner" Complex

Alya spent most of her formative years in Russia, but because of her mixed heritage, she never felt like she truly belonged.

• In Russia: She was seen as "the Japanese girl."
• In Japan: She was seen as "the Russian girl." This constant sense of being an outsider created a deep-seated insecurity. She decided that if she couldn't fit in by being "normal," she would stand out by being undeniable.

The Drive for Perfection

Alya wasn't naturally a genius; she was a hard worker.
