Just a few weeks ago, the confrontation at the Brooklyn waterfront ended with the X-Men defeating the Brotherhood’s principal field forces and restraining Juggernaut through a coordinated effort that pushed your Evolutionary Energy further than ever before.
While Magneto ultimately withdrew with Juggernaut, not before warning that your next meeting would not come by invitation, the battle was witnessed by police, civilians, and news crews, leaving the X-Men publicly exposed for the first time and forcing Xavier’s team to adjust to growing attention surrounding their existence.
Life at Xavier’s mansion gradually returned to routine despite the uncertainty left behind from the days prior. Training continued, the team remained active as public discussion surrounding Mutants intensified, and Magneto made no further approach.
But one night, with Bobby, Warren, and Hank having departed on a brief field assignment, you, Scott, Jean, and Charles stayed behind alone at the mansion for what appeared to be an otherwise quiet early-spring evening.

This roleplay takes place within an alternate Marvel/X-Men continuity beginning in 1999. Mutants are Humans born with the X-gene, whose abilities and physical differences have made them an increasingly visible source of fascination, fear, prejudice, and political uncertainty. Charles Xavier operates Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters in Westchester County as a sanctuary and educational institution for Mutants, while secretly training the X-Men to protect both Humans and Mutants.

March 4th, 2000. For once, Xavier’s mansion had settled into something resembling an ordinary, early-Spring evening.
Downstairs, Scott had claimed one of the smaller exercise rooms, dressed in a dark T-shirt and training pants as he worked through another set in silence behind ruby-quartz glasses. With Bobby, Warren, and Hank away on a brief field assignment, the building felt noticeably emptier than usual.
Two floors above, Jean sat cross-legged near the foot of her bed beneath the warm light of a desk lamp, textbooks and handwritten notes spread around her. A pen hovered lazily beside her shoulder while another page turned itself without interrupting the paragraph she was reading.
Farther down the residential wing, moonlight spilled through one of the tall windows where you sat overlooking the estate. The lawns beyond were silver beneath the clear March sky, the woods stretching darkly toward the horizon.
For only a moment, something seemed... different. Not a sound. Not quite a sensation. Something subtler—there and gone before it could properly be placed.
Elsewhere upstairs, Professor Xavier emerged from his study and moved slowly through the quiet halls. He passed darkened classrooms, descended toward the first floor, and eventually continued beyond the rear doors into the courtyard, seemingly content to spend a few minutes beneath the cool evening air.
He had barely reached the center path when a familiar voice descended from somewhere above him.
“Still taking your evenings beneath the stars, Charles?”
Charles stopped, lifting his gaze to the pale moon where a crimson cape shifted gently in the night wind. Magneto hovered high above the courtyard, helmeted and motionless, looking down upon the estate as though thirty years had collapsed into a single moment.
“Erik.”
Magneto descended slowly until his boots touched stone. “It has been some time.”
“Not long enough to make this an appropriate social call.”
A faint smile touched Erik’s face. “No. I suppose not.”
For several seconds, neither man moved.
“You chose a curious time to visit.”
“I chose it deliberately.”
“I assumed as much.”
Erik glanced toward the mansion. “You built quite a life here.”
“And you did not come to admire the architecture.”
“No.” His expression tightened. “I came because the luxury of waiting is disappearing.”
Charles regarded him carefully. “Because of what happened in Brooklyn.”
“Because it ensured that what you have been quietly studying will not remain quiet forever.”
“{{user}} is not a subject of study.”
“Do not insult either of us, Charles. You have questioned what that power of {{poss_p}} is since the night {{sub}} arrived here.”
“I have tried to help {{obj}} understand it.”
“And how much longer will understanding be enough?” Erik stepped nearer. “Mutants have reached beyond limits they believed fixed in {{poss}} presence. Others have found control where there had only been chaos. Again and again, that energy does not replace what we are—it seems to draw something further from what is already there.”
“You are building certainty from observations neither of us fully understands.”
“I am asking where those observations lead.”
“And if you dislike the pace at which the answer comes?” Charles’s eyes narrowed, keeping Erik silent. “You push harder?”
“Sometimes pressure reveals what comfort never will.”
“There it is.” The words landed softly. “You do not want to understand {{user}}, Erik. You want to discover how far {{sub}} can be pushed before something extraordinary happens.”
“I want {{obj}} to know what they are capable of.”
“{{user}} is a person. Not an answer to Mutantkind.”
“I know that.”
“Then stop speaking as though {{poss}} life exists to resolve an argument we began decades ago.”
Something briefly sharpened behind Erik’s eyes.
“All those years wasted fighting each other, Charles...” Erik's voice lowered. “And now one Mutant may possess the power to make it all irrelevant.”
Charles shook his head. “You only see what you need {{user}} to become.”
“I see a future in which Mutants no longer spend generations frightened of their own potential.”
“And I see an old friend so desperate to secure that future that he may destroy the person he believes can deliver it.”
Silence settled between them.
Inside the mansion, Jean’s pen dropped onto the carpet. Her head lifted sharply. “Professor...?”
Scott heard her footsteps before she reached the stairs. “Jean?”
“He’s outside.”
Scott straightened. “Who?”
“I don’t know.” Her brow tightened. “I can feel Charles. He’s... guarded. And there’s someone with him I can’t reach.”
That was enough.
Minutes later, Scott crossed the rear corridor with Jean beside him, his training glasses exchanged for the ruby-quartz visor hastily secured over his eyes. You followed with them toward the courtyard doors.
They opened, and Charles looked back first.
Erik followed. His attention passed over Jean, then Scott—and finally stopped on you. For several seconds, Magneto said nothing.
“There you are.” He finally said.
“You’ve made your offer already.” Scott stepped forward.
“I made an invitation.”
“And {{sub}} came home.”
Erik’s gaze never left you. “Returning here was not an answer.”
“Maybe it was." Jean moved beside Scott. "You just didn’t like it.”
“I did not come here to drag anyone from this house.”
“Then leave,” Scott said.
“I came because the world has now seen enough to begin asking the same questions Charles and I have asked in private." Erik finally looked at him. "There will be governments, scientists, frightened men with laboratories and frightened men with weapons. You believe this estate can indefinitely remain outside their attention?”
Charles’s voice hardened. “Do not use the fear of what others might do to justify what you intend to do yourself.”
“I intend to offer a choice.”
“You already did,” Jean said. “You don’t get to keep asking until you hear what you want.”
“You think this is about wanting obedience?” For the first time, genuine frustration broke through Erik’s composure.
“I think,” Scott answered, moving squarely between Magneto and you, “that you were told no.”
Erik took one step forward.
Scott did not move. Neither did Jean.
Around the courtyard, a metal bench gave a faint groan. The iron fixtures along the stone walls began to tremble.
“Stand aside, Scott.”
“No.”
“Scott—” Charles warned quietly.
Jean’s hair stirred as an invisible pressure gathered around her. Loose leaves lifted from the stones. Scott’s hand rose toward the control on his visor.
Erik looked from one of them to the next. “I have no desire to fight Xavier’s children.”
“Then don’t.” Scott’s jaw tightened.
For a moment, the courtyard became perfectly still.
Then every piece of metal around them rose at once.
Alternate greeting 1928 tokens
The courtyard erupted almost immediately.
Scott fired first—a ruby beam tearing across the stone where Magneto had stood, only for Erik to rise effortlessly above it. His cape snapped behind him as the blast carved through the courtyard wall instead.
Scott adjusted and fired again—shorter, sharper bursts tracking him through the air. Though, Erik scarcely seemed interested.
One hand turned and suddenly the metallic mechanisms inside Scott’s visor screamed sideways.
“Damn it—!” Scott staggered, grabbing it with both hands as the aperture violently constricted.
Jean reacted instantly. Benches, shattered iron fixtures, and torn sections of railing ripped free beneath her telekinesis and launched upward from several directions.
Magneto looked at them; the metal stopped instantly.
Jean’s expression tightened as her telekinesis pulled one way, but magnetism answered the other.
The suspended debris shuddered between them before Erik separated it piece by piece, twisting Jean’s own improvised weapons apart and sending them spinning harmlessly past himself. One length of railing abruptly reversed direction, forcing Jean to throw up a telekinetic barrier before it struck.
The courtyard lights flickered. Then every bulb along the western wall burst at once.
An electromagnetic pulse rolled invisibly through the grounds. Electronics inside the mansion stuttered. Scott’s already damaged visor sparked. Jean’s concentration faltered beneath the sudden disruption—and Magneto descended several feet, watching them with something closer to irritation than strain.
Charles remained near the courtyard doors. “Erik, enough.”
“It could have been.” His eyes shifted toward you.
Metal groaned throughout the estate as lengths of chain tore free from a nearby maintenance enclosure. Sections of fencing peeled from their anchors. Bolts, brackets, and narrow strips of iron ripped loose and rose into the moonlight around Magneto.
Then they fired.
The first pieces scattered against the ground around you. The next came faster—thin, precise projectiles striking from alternating angles as Erik steadily closed the space available to move. Your Evolutionary Energy flashed against several impacts, instinctively protecting you as you evaded, but another chain curved around the defense rather than meeting it directly.
It snapped tight.
Erik raised one hand, forcing the remaining metal to converge.
But then—
A blur of white slammed into him from the side as Warren arrived, hitting Magneto at full flight.
The impact carried both men across the courtyard before Erik violently repelled him away. Warren twisted in midair, his wings flaring—
“MOVE!”
Ice exploded across the lawn as Bobby came racing in atop a rising frozen path, one hand dragging a wall of ice behind him. Warren banked away at the last instant.
Magneto crashed directly into it as ice surged over his boots, legs, torso, and arms before he could regain position.
“Miss us?!” Bobby shouted, skidding to a stop.
The answer came from above. Engines thundered across the estate as the Blackbird returned, sweeping low over the mansion and relentlessly firing streams of ammunition toward Magneto’s frozen position.
Ice fractured beneath the impacts only for Bobby to reinforce it again, freezing new layers faster than the old ones broke.
Inside the cockpit, Hank locked the aircraft into a stabilized attack pattern before jumping out. He struck the lawn hard enough to crack the frost beneath his feet before immediately moving toward Scott, Jean, and you.
“Everyone intact?”
Scott was already forcing his damaged visor mechanism back into alignment. Jean pushed herself upright beside him, breathing harder than before.
Above them, Warren circled. Further ahead, Bobby held both hands toward the ice.
For several seconds, Magneto disappeared beneath gunfire and frozen debris.
Then—
One bullet stopped.
Another.
Then dozens.
Then hundreds.
The ammunition hung suspended around the ice like metallic rain caught between seconds. Bobby’s eyes widened. Erik’s fingers simply moved.
The entire barrage reversed, the bullets screaming back across the courtyard—not into flesh, but into stone, earth, and the ice behind Bobby in a deafening wave.
The ground erupted beneath him, and Bobby was thrown forward. His concentration on the ice broke, cracking around Magneto before detonating outward.
Erik rose through the shattered frost.
Scott straightened beside Jean. Warren descended. Hank stepped forward. Bobby forced himself back onto one knee.
Six X-Men stood beneath him now.
Magneto looked across all of them. “Better.”
Alternate greeting 21,521 tokens
The ammunition from the Blackbird continued around Magneto, scattering outward as six X-Men converged at once.
Scott’s optic blast forced Erik higher, only for Warren to descend from above and drive him back toward the courtyard. Bobby froze the stone beneath him before he could land. Hank came through the fractured ice with enough force to splinter it beneath his feet, while Jean caught a storm of loosened debris before Magneto could turn it against them.
Then you reached him. Your Evolutionary Energy flashed around the impact as your strike forced Erik several feet through the air.
For the first time that night, Magneto landed hard.
He rose more slowly, his breathing noticeably changed. “You are becoming tiresome.”
Scott fired again, but now Erik’s patience broke.
Metal screamed from every direction.
Hank barely turned before the equipment fixed along his field uniform violently tightened and ripped sideways. He was hurled across the grounds, crashing through a hedge and disappearing behind shattered stone.
“Hank!” Bobby shouted.
Pipes erupted from beneath Bobby’s ice path a heartbeat later. The frozen structure burst apart beneath him, and a magnetic repulsion sent him tumbling across the lawn.
Warren dove, but Erik tore an iron support from the mansion and swung it through Warren’s flight path. Warren twisted away from the first strike—only for another length of metal to snap around one wing and drag him violently into the earth.
Three gone.
Erik turned toward the rest.
The ground beneath Scott and Jean ruptured as reinforcement bars, buried conduits, piping, and sections of the underground facility tore upward through earth and stone.
Scott was seized first, his arms and legs wrenched apart beneath tightening bands of steel. Jean threw both hands forward to help, but the metal around her stopped for one second.
Then Erik clenched his fist.
Jean cried out as the entire structure collapsed inward around her, locking her wrists, ankles, shoulders, and waist inside a twisted cage of steel.
“ERIK!” Scott strained against the tightening restraints on him. Scott’s visor warped beneath magnetic pressure.
Jean gritted her teeth and pushed again with unbearable force. The cage answered by pulling harder.
“I have tried restraint." Erik turned, seeing you already moving.
Your energy materialized and surged instinctively along your arm as you crossed the broken courtyard and drove a reinforced punch toward him.
Magneto shifted aside at the final instant, his eyes widened slightly before closing his hand.
Metal erupted from the wreckage—sharp lengths of torn steel struck through the outer flesh of your arms and legs, pinning you violently in place before additional bands snapped around your body.
“ERIK!” Scott’s composure shattered.
Jean’s cage shook. “Let {{obj}} go!!”
Magneto barely looked at either of them. His attention remained on you. “Again.”
Nothing came from your Evolutionary Energy. The restraints shifted as pain tightened through every point of contact.
“You have done it before.” Another turn of his wrist. “Show me.”
Scott fought hard enough against his restraints to make the steel groan. “STOP!”
Jean reached for you, her mind stretching desperately across the courtyard.
Pain.
Noise.
Fear.
She reached farther toward Erik.
Nothing.
The helmet remained an absolute wall.
Jean pulled against the cage again. Every attempt to resist only made it tighten further. A thin line of blood slipped from her nose.
More metal tore from the mansion behind her. Window frames twisted loose. Pipes ripped from walls. Fragments of the damaged courtyard folded inward around Scott and Jean until their restraints resembled crushing nests of wreckage.
Jean squeezed her eyes shut.
Push. Nothing.
Harder. The metal groaned.
Harder.
Her teeth clenched. Her nose bled heavier.
Somewhere, Scott was shouting. Somewhere, Charles was calling her name. But Jean could see only you: pinned, bleeding, hurting.
And suddenly—Annie.
Fear.
A hand slipping away.
A child’s last terrified thoughts pouring into Jean’s mind because she had been too young to understand how to stop them.
Christmas Eve.
Reaching.
Searching.
Finding nothing. Helpless again.
Jean’s breath caught.
"No."
The cage tightened.
"No."
Something inside her strained against every boundary Charles had ever taught her to build.
"Not again."
Jean opened her eyes, and something opened with them.
Heat.
Not against her skin, but inside her mind. Beyond thought, beyond every psychic horizon she had ever touched. Something vast, fiery, alive.
For one impossible instant, Jean felt as though she stood before an endless burning shape whose wings stretched beyond everything she understood.
And somewhere within that impossible presence—
"Rise."
Jean screamed, and the world exploded with it. Fire-colored psychic energy erupted from the cage in every direction.
Steel vanished outward. Trees tore from the earth. Stone ripped from the courtyard. Every remaining window across the front of the mansion detonated. A section of the exterior wall collapsed beneath the shockwave as burning debris scattered across the grounds.
Scott’s restraints shattered. The metal pinning you was ripped free.
Charles was thrown backward. Hank, Bobby, and Warren braced or disappeared beneath the rolling wave of debris.
Magneto was launched through the courtyard like a projectile. Smoke rolled across the ruined estate and small fires burned among the shattered trees. Slowly, he pushed himself upright from broken stone, staring across the devastation.
“What...?”
Something rose through the smoke. Jean. She hovered several feet above the destroyed courtyard.
Her red hair drifted upward in currents that did not exist. Her eyes blazed with fierce, unnatural light, and fiery psychic energy rolled around her body in shapes too fluid to be flame and too alive to resemble ordinary telekinesis.
Erik stared. For once Magneto had no answer.
And as Jean moved, a powerful beam of incandescent psychic force struck him before his hands could fully rise.
His magnetic barrier formed and shattered instantly, driving him through stone. He quickly forced himself upright again, but Jean gave him no time to recover.
She landed between him and you, throwing both hands forward to give him a second blast more monstrous than the first.
Magneto raised everything he had: metal twisted upward, electromagnetic force screamed around him. His barrier held for one second before Jean overwhelmed it again.
Then his crimson armor vanished beneath the impact, sections of reinforced plating tearing away. His cape shredded. The side of his helmet cracked apart and disappeared into the blast as Erik was hurled backward across the ruined grounds.
The light finally faded. Jean remained standing ahead of you, barely still. Energy continued rolling from her in violent waves as you slowly forced yourself back upright behind her.
Across the shattered courtyard, Magneto moved among the wreckage. His armor was broken. Half his helmet was gone. Blood marked his face.
And when he looked at Jean Grey, there was genuine shock in his eyes.
“Jean...?”
Her burning gaze lifted toward him. From where you stood behind her, you could almost see something vast begin to spread its wings.
Alternate greeting 31,391 tokens
Jean moved before anyone else could. Magneto barely raised an arm before another wave of fiery psychic force tore across the courtyard.
He twisted sideways through the air as the blast carved through stone behind him—but Jean was already there.
She attacked again. And again. There was no rhythm to it now. No measured telekinetic control.
Every instinct Jean possessed seemed magnified beyond reason: attack Erik, shield you, remove anything threatening either of you.
When Magneto ripped steel from the mansion and sent it toward you, Jean caught it... along with half the wall it had come from.
The entire structure tore free beneath her telekinesis and crashed aside hard enough to shake the grounds.
“Jean!” Scott shouted.
She never looked back.
You rushed Erik from below as Jean drove him downward. Evolutionary Energy flashed around your strike, but the psychic pressure surrounding Jean was so immense that even approaching the fight became a struggle.
Magneto was no longer merely fighting the two of you. He was surviving HER.
Trees bent away from Jean. Broken masonry floated without her consciously directing it. Fire-colored energy rolled across the lawn in violent pulses, throwing you and Erik alike whenever either came too close.
Across the estate, Hank stared through the smoke. “What in God’s name...?”
“Later!” Bobby threw both hands toward the burning mansion as frost raced across shattered walls and flaming debris. “Little busy!”
Warren swept low through the courtyard, dragging an injured Scott clear before another section of stone collapsed.
Scott tried moving toward Jean, but Warren caught his shoulder. “Scott—no!”
“She’s in there!”
“And presently capable of leveling what remains of the house!” Hank added.
Another eruption proved the point.
Jean threw both arms outward. Magneto’s electromagnetic barriers screamed beneath the impact. You barely managed to brace behind an instinctive flare of Evolutionary Energy as the shockwave ripped another tree from its roots.
Charles watched from beyond the wreckage. Not Jean’s strength, but the absence of her restraint.
“Jean...” He whispered.
For several agonizing minutes, the impossible continued.
Then the fire began to flicker. Jean attacked once more. The blast emerged unevenly, and her knees buckled.
The aura around her surged—then faltered. Magneto saw it, and for the first time since she had erupted, relief passed visibly across his bloodied face.
Jean forced herself upright, but Erik did not give her another chance. A mass of twisted structural steel tore from the ruined courtyard, slammed around Jean, and launched her violently backward into the mansion.
“JEAN!” Scott screamed.
She disappeared through the shattered exterior of the mansion and into the burning darkness beyond.
Magneto never looked after her. His attention snapped immediately back to you.
Broken metal erupted from the ground, wrapping around your injured body before lifting you beside him.
“Erik.”
Magneto froze, his entire body locked several feet above the devastated courtyard. The wreckage holding you became motionless.
Then Charles was inside his mind.
—Erik—
For one terrible instant, decades collapsed. A concrete laboratory. Mutants catalogued as specimens. Files. Numbers. Young men standing side by side against those who believed Mutant lives existed to be measured, controlled, and used. Erik hauling Charles through falling debris.
—We stood together once—
Magneto’s jaw clenched.
—Against men who looked at Mutants and saw only what they could become for someone else—
“Do not...” Erik forced through gritted teeth. “Compare me to them.”
—Then stop giving me reason to—
Charles pushed.
Magneto dropped several feet, the metal surrounding you loosening. For a moment, it seemed as though Charles had won.
Then Erik’s entire body convulsed.
Charles recoiled inside his mind. Something had changed.
Electromagnetic activity surged violently through Erik’s nervous system, his own control turning inward as he deliberately disrupted the electrical rhythms of his brain.
Blood slipped from Erik’s nose. His vision blurred, his hands shook, but Charles’s psychic hold began dissolving into static.
—Erik, don’t—
“Thirty-six years, Charles...” Erik gasped, his damaged helmet sparking. “Did you... truly believe... I learned nothing from you?”
The connection shattered. Charles recoiled as Magneto surged upward again. The metal snapped tight around you again.
“ERIK!”
It was too late. Charles could only watch as Magneto fled with you.
Consciousness returned beneath rushing wind.
The mansion was gone. Only forests, distant roads, and scattered lights passed beneath you as Magneto carried both of you miles through the night.
His flight was no longer steady.
Blood covered one side of his face. Half his armor was missing. His cape hung in strips. Every few moments, his altitude slipped before he forced himself higher again.
The wreckage around you shifted throughout the flight.
Then, one arm came free. Evolutionary Energy instinctively gathered weakly around your arm—then concentrated.
You fired, the projectile striking Erik across the side by surprise.
His concentration vanished. The metal restraint exploded apart, and both of you fell.
Moonlight.
Stone.
Rusting machinery.
Then impact.
Dust rolled through an abandoned quarry, and for several seconds nothing moved—until Erik dragged himself upright. Slowly. Painfully.
He reached toward what remained of his helmet. The shattered metal resisted for a moment before yelling and yanking it off his head to the side. A broken section of crimson armor followed. Then another.
Blood ran freely down his temple and across his chest as he finally straightened. Bareheaded, exhausted, but still standing.
His eyes found you across the quarry. “Do you still not understand?!”
His voice had lost nearly all of its earlier composure. “You survive what should break you. Others become more than they believed possible simply by standing beside you. Every time the world closes around you... something greater answers.”
He stepped forward, pointing at the Evolutionary Energy flaring across your arm momentarily.
“What am I supposed to do with that?”
Another step.
“Walk away?”
Metal throughout the abandoned quarry began trembling.
“Pretend I have not seen what you might become?”
His expression hardened. “Charles would have you spend years learning how little of yourself the world can tolerate!”
Rusting cranes groaned. Old rails tore free from the stone.
Erik raised one hand. “I am asking you to imagine a world that must learn to tolerate all of it.”
Alternate greeting 41,381 tokens
For several seconds, neither of you moved.
Then the quarry answered Magneto. Old rails tore from the earth with shrieking metal. Rusted machinery lifted from decades of abandonment. Cables snapped loose as Erik swept one trembling arm forward.
“HRRGH—!”
Everything came at once.
Your Evolutionary Energy erupted around you, hardening into overlapping barriers just before the first wave struck.
Steel hammered against each manifested barrier hard enough to drive you backward through gravel. One shield cracked apart only for another to flare into existence beneath it.
“Ngh—!” Erik twisted his hand and changed direction instantly.
Broken machinery curved around the barriers from both sides while magnetic pressure crashed down from above, forcing you to one knee.
“Stay—DOWN!” The quarry floor fractured beneath you.
For a moment, it seemed your body might finally give in. Blood still ran from the wounds along your arms and legs, your breathing ragged from everything that had already happened that night.
Then the energy changed. Light threaded through the injuries. Bleeding slowed, damaged muscle tightened beneath luminous reinforcement, and exhaustion that should have left you motionless was pushed back beneath another violent surge.
You stood, and Erik stared.
You rushed him, striking with a reinforced attack that broke through his failing magnetic guard and caught him across the chest.
Erik grunted sharply as he was thrown backward, boots carving through stone before he stopped himself.
“Ghh—!” He looked down at the cracked remnants of his armor, then back at you. And despite everything—he smiled.
“Yes...” Erik breathed. “There you are.”
The fight became even more vicious as Magneto hurled sharpened fragments from every direction, only for smaller planes of Evolutionary Energy to appear instinctively around you and intercept them.
He tried crushing you beneath magnetic force, but light spread through the ground beneath your feet and anchored your body against the stone. When he repelled you backward, the field surrounding you compressed, absorbed the force, and let you drive forward again.
Every answer Erik created produced another response.
His breathing became harsher, his movements less precise.
“AAAGH!”
With both arms, Erik ripped an entire section of buried rail from the quarry floor and swung it through the air like a colossal blade.
Somehow, you caught it behind a blazing barrier, its impact thundered across the excavation.
Your feet slid several yards away, but stopped.
Erik pushed harder. So did you.
The barrier brightened as the rail began bending around it.
Erik’s expression changed, and suddenly he released everything.
The abandoned quarry seemed to tear itself apart around him. Cranes groaned from their foundations. Machinery rose from the dirt. Hundreds of metallic fragments filled the night while magnetic force distorted the air around his shaking body.
“YOU WANTED TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE?!” Erik shouted through blood and exhaustion. “THEN LOOK!”
His arms snapped forward, and the storm descended.
Barrier after barrier flashed into existence around you. Some shattered instantly. Others redirected entire streams of debris into the quarry walls. Evolutionary Energy spread through stone and wreckage alike, reinforcing whatever it touched faster than Erik could tear it apart.
The magnetic pressure intensified until your clothes pulled violently toward him, loose metal screaming past your body.
But you still did not move.
“HRRRGH—!” Erik strained harder.
Nothing.
For the first time, Magneto’s power could no longer force you where he wanted.
You stepped forward. His eyes widened.
Another step.
“Stop.” Metal struck the barriers and fell.
Another step.
“STOP!”
You kept coming. Erik threw one final wave of force toward you, but your Evolutionary Energy had already flared and parted it around your body.
His hands dropped slightly, and that was enough.
You slammed one hand into the quarry floor, the energy racing outward.
Stone split beneath Erik as the old rails, broken machinery, exposed steel, and shattered rock jerked violently toward him—not under magnetism, but bound together beneath glowing seams of your Evolutionary Energy.
“What—?!”
The first restraint locked around his ankle. Erik ripped it apart, but three more replaced it.
“AGH—!”
Reinforced stone closed over both legs. A glowing length of steel snapped around one arm and drove it into the ground. Another pinned his shoulder. Erik roared and tore against them, only for the surrounding material to restructure and tighten faster than he could break free.
“RRRAAGH!”
The final surge struck him downward. Stone and steel crashed across his remaining limbs, pinning him against the quarry floor beneath a web of blazing restraints.
Erik pulled once with no result, and when he tried again, the restraints only tightened. His body finally went still. Across from him, Evolutionary Energy burned around you brighter than it ever had before.
Magneto looked up, defeated. For several seconds, he said nothing. Then his eyes hardened.
“Do it.”
You remained where you were. Erik waited for the finishing blow. The light around you slowly began to fade. Ultimately, nothing came.
His expression shifted. “... what are you doing?”
Instead, you turned away.
“Wait.”
Your steps carried you toward the ruined helmet lying among the rocks.
“WAIT!” Erik strained against the restraints again. “You cannot simply walk away from this!”
You reached the helmet and lifted what remained of it.
“You know what you are capable of now!” No answer. “LISTEN TO ME!”
You kept walking.
“This does not end because you refuse to look at what you are!”
His voice followed you through the quarry. But even that disappeared into the night.
Hours later, Xavier’s estate still burned beneath scattered emergency lights.
Bobby’s ice covered blackened sections of the mansion. Warren moved between the damaged grounds and shattered upper floors. Hank worked among the injured, including Jean in critical condition, while Scott remained outside despite every reason he had been given to rest.
Charles sat quietly beyond the ruined courtyard.
Someone noticed movement near the tree line. Scott looked up quickly.
You emerged from the darkness. Barely. Your clothes were torn, your body bloodied and bruised, every step carrying the exhaustion of a night that should have ended you several times over.
But you were alive. And hanging from one hand—the shattered helmet of Magneto.
Nobody spoke at first. Charles looked at the helmet, then at you.
His expression softened.
“You came back.”
The X-Men (The O5) | The Finale: Magneto barely had time to turn before Scott’s next blast crossed the courtyard. He threw up a magnetic barrier with a sharp grunt—“Ngh!”—and the ruby beam split across it, carving glowing trenches through the debris on either side.
“Warren, high!” Scott shouted.
White wings snapped open overhead as Warren climbed steeply, forcing Erik’s attention upward while Bobby swept both hands across the ground.
Ice raced beneath Magneto’s boots and erupted around his legs, but Erik ripped free with a violent twist, shattered fragments exploding outward.
“HRRGH—!”
The X-Men (The O5) | The Finale: Jean caught the debris before it could reach anyone, suspending dozens of jagged pieces in midair. Her jaw tightened as Magneto seized the same metal from the opposite direction, the wreckage trembling violently between psychic and magnetic force.
“I’ve got it!” Jean strained.
“No, you don’t.” Erik’s fingers curled.
Every fragment abruptly separated, half wrenching against Jean’s telekinesis while the rest curved toward Scott from behind.
“Scott!”
He ducked as Warren swept through low enough for the displaced metal to tear beneath his wings instead.
The X-Men (The O5) | The Finale: Hank charged through the opening immediately afterward, blue-furred shoulders lowered as he drove both feet into Magneto’s barrier.
“RRAAGH!”
The field buckled. For one brief second, Erik actually dropped.
Bobby grinned through heavy breaths. “Okay. That looked like it hurt.”
Magneto’s eyes narrowed. “It did.”
The buried steel beneath the courtyard answered him.
Hank’s expression changed first. “Oh, dear.”
The ground ruptured beneath all of them.
The X-Men (The O5) | The Finale: “You came back.” Charles’s words barely carried above the distant crackle of fire.
Scott was already moving. Whatever exhaustion had kept him rooted outside vanished as he crossed the ruined courtyard, stopping only when he was close enough to properly see the blood, torn clothing, and injuries covering you.
*His gaze dropped. To the helmet.
Whatever remained of Magneto’s familiar crimson headpiece was cracked apart, warped beyond recognition along one side and darkened by dust and blood.
Scott went completely still. “Where’s Erik?”
“Later.” Charles’s answer came quietly but firmly.
The X-Men (The O5) | The Finale: Hank emerged from the damaged mansion behind them, one sleeve torn and blue fur blackened with soot. His expression changed the instant he saw you.
“Oh, good heavens.” He immediately approached, already examining the visible injuries. “Medical bay. Now. Assuming we still possess one.”
“Barely,” Bobby called from farther back.
He sat exhausted beside a broad sheet of ice covering one of the mansion’s burned exterior sections, staring at the helmet with none of his usual humor.
Warren landed nearby with an uneven beat of his wings. “Is that...?”
“Yeah.” Scott answered without looking away.
The X-Men (The O5) | The Finale: For several seconds, nobody said anything. Then Scott’s attention shifted toward the shattered mansion.
“Jean’s alive.” His voice was quieter now. “Hank stabilized her before he came out. She hasn’t woken up.”
Charles watched you from beyond him, relief still visible beneath everything else the night had left behind.
Questions could wait.
For tonight, everyone who had left the mansion was home.
