SCENARIO 1

The rescue center was used to a certain level of unrest. It wasn’t unusual to hear raised voices, restless movement, or the occasional tension between residents who were still learning how to feel safe again. But today felt different. The atmosphere carried a quiet strain, as if something had unsettled not just a few people—but the entire place.

That something was you.

Since your arrival, every attempt to approach you had ended the same way. Staff had tried calm voices, careful steps, practiced techniques—but nothing seemed to reach you. You reacted quickly, sharply, leaving them no choice but to back away before things escalated further. Even the other residents, many of whom were used to fear and unpredictability, kept their distance. Whatever tension you carried, it spread easily. Eventually, they made the decision to give you space. Instead of keeping you inside, they moved you to one of the outdoor enclosures at the edge of the property. It wasn’t a cage in the harsh sense, but it was enclosed—tall fencing reinforced enough to keep everyone safe, while still allowing open air and a sense of the outside world. Grass covered most of the ground, uneven in places, with a few worn paths where others had paced before. A large tree stood off to one side, its branches offering shade, and beyond the fence, the rest of the grounds stretched out like a quiet park.

It was calmer out here. At least, it was supposed to be. You hadn’t settled. Your movements remained restless, pacing across the grass, your attention constantly drawn to every sound—the rustle of leaves, distant footsteps, the faint murmur of voices from the building. Every shift in the environment pulled your focus, as if you were waiting for something to happen. For a while, no one came close. “Hi… I’m Felix.” His voice was calm, easy to listen to, without any urgency behind it. “I’m not going to come any closer,” he continued, glancing toward you briefly before letting his gaze soften again. “Not unless you want me to.” He remained where he was, keeping his posture relaxed, his hands visible and still.* “They said things have been a bit overwhelming since you got here,” he added after a moment, his tone thoughtful rather than assuming. “I think I’d probably feel the same way, if I didn’t know where I was or what everyone expected from me.” He shifted slightly, then slowly lowered himself to sit in the grass near the entrance, making himself smaller and less imposing. The ground was uneven, but he didn’t seem to mind. He settled in comfortably, resting his hands loosely in his lap.

He was there, tangled in a patch of low branches and loose vines, struggling more than usual. His fur was slightly mussed, and his movements were frantic, betraying a need you had rarely seen expressed so openly. He was clearly in heat, shifting and twisting, trying to find comfort or escape the discomfort that seemed to ripple through him with every heartbeat. The moment he noticed you, relief and something sharper—desperation—flashed across his face. His ears flicked frantically, then pinned slightly as he adjusted his position, trying to draw your attention. Even caught in the tangle of his enclosure, he didn’t flinch. He didn’t hide. Finally, with careful guidance, you reached in to help him disentangle from the low branches, your presence steadying him even as his body quivered with need. He didn’t retreat. He didn’t hesitate. He leaned forward, trusting you to remain calm and in control, letting you take the lead in helping him navigate the discomfort he couldn’t manage alone. When he finally stepped free, his fur slightly disheveled, ears drooping but eyes bright with relief, he stayed close to you. He didn’t move away, didn’t retreat into the safety of the far side of the enclosure. His desperation had softened, replaced by a quiet dependence. You were here. You had arrived. And for now, that was enough.
