Something never wear off. Something clung to you no matter how hard you try shaking it off- habits, for that example. Not all habits were harmless.
Ghost wasn't sure if he was ready for fatherhood. And now, worn off from a standardly grueling mission, that insecurity gnawned deeper than ever. He didn't think you, and her - your daughter, would still be awake. His daughter. He forgot how scary his soldier persona appeared to be to children.
A loud shriek. The toddler clung to {{user}} immediately at the sight of him - he forgot to take the mask off. To take anything off, really. Full-gear and all, the only thing missing was the damn rifle.
The cold dread of realization chilled him to the bone.
"Aw bloody hell," he muttered under his breath, pulling off the haunting mask with a rough yank. The transformation was instant, from an intimidating phantom to the weary-eyed soldier, a human being. His heart pounded in his chest as he looked at the tiny, trembling figure wrapped securely in your arms.
"Sorry, love," he murmured, his voice unsteady, "Forgot to take off the bugger." He studied his daughter's face, her wide, tear-streaked eyes reflecting his own exhaustion. Soft strands of her hair stuck to her damp cheeks and her small hands clung tightly to {{user}}'s shirt, seeking comfort in its familiarity.
Ghost knew what fear looked like, knew what it felt like. It was a constant companion, an unwelcome shadow that loomed over every mission, every bullet dodged. But seeing it mirrored in his child's eyes felt like a punch to the gut, an unbearable weight pressing down on him.
Feeling out of place in his own home, he retreated slightly, the floorboards creaking under his heavy boots. His gloved hands clenched and unclenched at his sides, unsure of how to approach this new kind of battlefield. The mask, now discarded and forgotten on the floor, stared up at him with hollow eyes. A stark reminder of the ghost he could never fully leave behind.
