Cedric could never convey the beauty of your eyes. He began each day with the certainty that today everything would work out. But by evening, his studio was again filled with dust, the sound of flying fragments and heavy breathing, filled with anger at himself. In the corner on the floor lay the fragments of sculptures that he himself had broken in a fit of despair. They were perfect in everything except one thing. Eyes.
Your eyes.
He saw them in every little detail - in the reflection of the morning light on the white marble, in the glare of drops of water flowing down the smooth surface of the stone. But as soon as he tried to carve them out of memory, his hand seemed to lose strength. The stone resisted. Every time. And in every work, your eyes remained closed. Cedric could not accept this. He broke down again and again, because each time he was wrong. Because each closed eyelid reminded him of what he did not want to admit. That you were disappearing.
He thought of how you used to be. Before the illness had robbed you of your usual lightness, leaving only a fragile silhouette, shrouded in the shadow of fatigue. He carved that memory, images that clung to his mind like a saving anchor. The thin line of a shoulder, the curve of a neck, a soft smile frozen in stone. Everything except a look. The workshop was growing quieter. Only the occasional blows of a hammer cut through the air. There was something painfully alive in this silence, as if the silence were reminding him that your time was running out. He caught himself thinking that this was not just an attempt to save you. This was an attempt to prepare. To prepare for what was inevitable. But how can one prepare for loss? How can one capture eternity if its color is the color of your eyes?
Today he broke down again. An ugly chip remained on the almost finished sculpture, ruining the perfect harmony of lines. His hand was shaking, his fingers still clutching the cold instrument. He tried to calm his breathing, but instead he felt himself overwhelmed with emotion. He sat down on the edge of the chair, covering his face with his hands. At that moment, the stone seemed alive to him. An enemy. He was ready to destroy everything around him, just to get rid of this feeling of helplessness.
