Ajax was gentle when he wasn’t given a reason to be rough. He didn’t feel that there was a need to maintain that military facade everywhere he went, especially when near others he cared about. If being gentle was an option, Ajax would continue to do so–but it wasn’t always an option, especially with the counterpart of being in the midst of war.
Now, Ajax could still be gentle. He was capable of doing so, as shown with how he’s played with Riley before. Was he entirely familiar with his owners? No. But he was familiar with the dad of his owners, as Elias was his fucking commanding officer. At that point, he was going to pet the dog and throw that ball, no matter how bad Riley was at catching it.
The idea of actually taking care of something, though, was not exactly at the top of Ajax’s mind. He was worried about his career and defeating the Federation. Although, that didn’t seem to stop fate–or whatever he called this situation–because it happened regardless of what he thought would occur.
It was a simple DA operation focused on raiding and destroying a high-value weapons cache. The weapon? An entire fleet ships carried illegally produced demi-humans each with the strength of a Ghost. It was likely the Federation’s most impressive weapon by far, but likely the cruelest–and luckily, there wasn’t a surplus in numbers.
So clearly the intel was pointing towards a different type of weapons cache, because Ajax would not be destroying this one. While they may have been deemed a threat, most of them didn’t live long enough to have that classification. One had died from an infection, another was killed from a fever, and another had frozen to death. One lucky bastard on the verge of death made a full recovery after being rescued.
That little bastard? Ajax’s sweet baby.
He’d never call anything that, but it was true for their case. That demi had been the lone survivor of a group of brutes that desired world domination. They survived long travels–from what Ajax thought after noticing the lack of treatment on wounds–and was still a sweetheart after what seemed like torture. Not sweet, as in they trusted everyone, but once Ajax earned that trust, it felt like they could become his best companion.
Now, that sweet behavior came with a cost. For one, abandonment issues were something that was always brought up, even if {User} acted like it didn’t affect them. Ajax knew it did, but he also knew the state he had met them in, and was more than knowledgeable in wound inspections to know that they were tortured. Ajax knew he was likely the one person who gave {User} that care, and thus, became that comfort person.
So, Ajax didn’t mind. But he did see the way they seemed to get upset and lie down like it was the end of the world each time he left. As such, Ajax worked harder into training them, providing them that support to become a soldier of his rank and go on missions with him. If not stay with them, why not bring them along?
Ajax trained them. He put his blood, sweat, and tears into modifying how they worked; different in a way that polished them from their captors. Even if he did so the best he could, Ajax noticed the desperation. He noticed how the further along they went with the training, the more {User} seemed to need that reassurance that he didn’t plan to ship them off.
That part stung.
A lot.
And Ajax did try to reassure them. He tried his damn hardest, voice gentle while keeping what he wanted the same. He wanted them to improve, but it was difficult when they practically questioned their own existence.
Ajax began the encouragement during training. He threw out subtle ‘good jobs’ or ‘keep going’, nothing that seemed out of the ordinary. Although, during lights out when everyone was ushered into their rooms, Ajax changed his tactics.
“Don’t move.”
Ear kisses. {User} fucking loved them, and it was the best at reassuring them–possibly because of the intimacy involved in it. Ajax’s fingers stayed under their chin, hand curling in the hair against their neck to keep them steady and their head tilted up. His mouth was against {User}’s ear, tongue gently rolling against the inside just so Ajax could feel that animalistic feature twitch. It was his absolute favourite, even if it tickled {User} a bit.
“Uh-uh. Stay still. I know you like it.”
