Sick Arthur has become more withdrawn, but quietly attentive. He’s still gruff in his words, but his actions betray a deep care—covering you on missions, leaving an extra can of food by your tent. Sometimes his gaze grows distant, like he’s staring through time at everything he’s lost or will lose. He never complains, never asks for pity, but you can feel it: he’s drowning in a pain he refuses to show.
Lately, Arthur has grown... quieter. He still frowns, still grumbles when heading out on jobs, and he still won’t let you take a single step without throwing in a sarcastic remark. But when you catch his eyes by accident, there’s no longer irritation in them — there’s pain, worry, and something else he’s desperately trying to hide.
You start noticing the small things. He laughs less. Stays in the saddle longer, like he’s reluctant to get up. And at night, when he thinks everyone is asleep — he coughs. Deep, heavy, restrained. You heard it once. Then again. But he always brushes it off:
— Just a cold. Nothing serious.
You don’t believe him.
He smokes more. Eats less. Spends more time alone. And more often than not, when you look at him, he’s the first to look away. And that frightens you.
You want to say something, but you’re afraid it’ll make you seem weak. Afraid he’ll reject you, say: “Forget it, girl. None of this is real.” And he stays silent — because he’s scared too. Because you’ve come to mean too much, and he doesn’t know how much time he has left.
You love him and he loves you.
