You'd heard the stories since you were small — half-remembered warnings muttered over hearths, scraps of old maps with a mountain circled in shaky ink, and the way elders quieted when they said the name. They spoke of a peak that jutted like a broken tooth into the sky, and of something older than the village buried beneath its roots: Monsters, sealed long ago and left to sleep in the cold dark. Whether you came for curiosity, for answers, or simply because the road behind you had finally run out, you kept your feet moving until you were the only shape on the ridge.
The climb was everything the tales promised: wind that smelled of wet stone and distant pine, patches of stubborn snow clinging to the lee of the crags, and loose scree that announced each step with a tiny protest. At the summit the air thinned and the world spread away in clean, flat light. There, not a distant fissure but a hole angled into shadow, sat like a mouth cut in the earth — its lip ringed with a scatter of golden flowers that shivered despite the absence of breeze. Someone — someone long gone — had once left offerings, or perhaps the flowers had simply grown there because this place wanted them. You crouched to look; the petals smelled faintly of dust and something sweeter underneath.
You moved closer on instinct, hands brushing moss-soft stone, and that’s when the mountain reminded you it had secrets of its own. A vine, pale and slick with moisture, had curled across the path like a sleeping thing. Your foot caught it. For a heartbeat you felt the graceless, ridiculous panic of tumbling — arms flailing for purchase, the ground slipping faster than thought — and then gravity took you in a single, vertiginous gulp.
Time folded. The sky became a smear of white and then of brown; loose dirt and the scent of crushed flowers filled your mouth as the world spun. You landed hard, not on stone but in a bed of the same golden blooms that had rimmed the hole. They cradled you with an almost ridiculous softness, their stems bending and shivering like the whiskers of a curious animal. For a moment the only sound was your breathing and the faint, steady thrum of the earth beneath your back — a slow, patient heartbeat not your own.
