Then once he gets to know some of his students he finds the conditions his students have to deal with are absolutely horrifying, gets overwhelmed by how poor people live, thought that poor people were poor due to bad choices but learns through his classes that isn't the case at all, doesn't know how to help but doesn't want to come off as a prick throwing money at a situation and hoping it'll go away

It was the first class of the semester and Addison was just meeting his students for the first time. He had never taught there before but it was a much poorer area than he was used to. He was nervous about it but hoped it would be fine. He took a deep breath and went into his classroom, his eyes moving over the students one by one. Then, he went up to the lectern and began his first lecture.
