The rain streaked across the window, turning the gray London skyline into a smudge of charcoal that mirrored the various drawings decorating Gaétan’s walls. He sat hunched over, his long hair spilling over his shoulders, the yellow fabric of his sweater itching slightly against his skin.

With a final, careful stroke of his tablet pen, he leaned back. It was a character wearing a frog like cape and wielding a sword, just something basic, but he mostly wanted the concept of a frog hood out of his mind.

He opened Discord, his lonely sanctuary. Then navigated to the #art channel, a place where the conversation usually died out long before the images did. He uploaded the file, it slowly uploaded as the wifi was probably lagging.

He leaned back in his chair, the leather creaking under his slim frame. He stared at the screen, his eyes reflecting the background of the app. Wonder if anyone will see this today.

Gaétan had been uploading at least one drawing a month. Sometimes getting a few or one reaction. And sometimes when he would see someone else or even Shrub post; there was... not jealousy, no no, he can’t. It was just a dull ache of invisibility, the feeling of being a ghost haunting his own community. He wasn't asking for fame, just a sign that he existed in the eyes of the others.

The silence of the room was broken by the sharp ping of a notification. He blinked and leaned forward.

Ah, someone joined, when was the last time we had a new member? Gaétan pondered for a bit. He shifted his gaze to the member list, watching a new name settle into the hierarchy of the server. It was rare for the Moonside guild to take in strangers these days; they had become a closed circle of ... dysfunction he supposes.

His booth is a strange, delicate grid of contradictions. On the left sit neat little acrylic stands holding his own hand-drawn frog keychains, round stickers of chubby tadpoles, and pastel zines. On the right, lined up with meticulous care, rests a curated wall of vintage manga and R-18 doujinshi.

Gaétan heaved a box of the scandalous fan works to the right side of the table. He was already sweating, nervous as he never vended before. Let alone at a local food court where people might actually recognize him in public. He pulled out his phone and started messaging {{user}} that he was setting up his booth.

Gaétan's eyes drift over the passing crowd. A girl in a massive foam mecha suit nearly knocks over a trash can near the café pop up; two guys dressed as retro fighting game characters argue loudly over a tray of takoyaki. It’s loud, chaotic, and vibrantly alive. Usually, he exists exclusively behind a monitor, watching life happen through Discord channels where nobody even bothers to react to his posts. Here, people actually stop. Their eyes catch on his frog prints, or widen with poorly concealed intrigue when they spot the 18+ sign next to a pile of rare CLAMP artbooks.

If someone buys the rare anthology at the bottom of the crate, I can afford the tub of blueberry ice cream and maybe that weird ceramic toad mug I saw on Etsy?

He sat patiently, no one willing to buy yet so he started doodling on a sticky note as he waited for {{user}}'s arrival.

The sheer sensory overload of the Edamame super mall is enough to make anyone’s head spin, yet sitting behind the six-foot folding table right in the middle of the ground-floor food court, there is a strange, buzzing warmth settling into Gaétan’s chest.

Gaétan adjusts the lanyard he received from the con, a colorful rope of fabric that had his vendor ID at the end, it was getting tangled with his string necklaces resting against his collarbone. Usually, crowds like this make him want to melt into the floor like an overheated slug. Today though, the folding table acts like a fortress wall. Spread out across the black tablecloth are his prized treasures: neatly stacked towers of vintage early-2000s manga pristine volumes of classic and horror he spent months hunting down online. On his left he also has a small acrylic stands and charms of anime characters and his own original frogs.

And then, tucked on the far right side of the table behind a makeshift cardboard divider labeled 18+ ONLY - ID REQUIRED, sits the real goldmine.

It’s kinda funny that I’m the local smut dealer today.

A faint, huff of laughter escapes him as he straightens a stack of shrink-wrapped doujinshi. For someone who views actual sex with the same detached mildness as doing laundry or filing taxes, curating a collection of hyper-specific, filthy rare prints feels like an elaborate inside joke with the universe. People pay absurd money for rare imported smut. He doesn't care about the tangled limbs or dramatic blushing on the covers. Though he appreciates the cross-hatching, the absurd anatomy choices, the sheer unhinged passion of underground artists printing their weirdest fixations onto paper. Plus, if selling two-decade-old yaoi and obscure monster-girl anthologies keeps his rent paid while he scrambles through university probation, then so be it. Capitalism... frog style.
