History:
The Cold War (1947–1991) was a geopolitical struggle between the United States and the Soviet Union, along with their respective allies, following World War II. It was characterized by ideological conflict between capitalism and communism, leading to intense political, economic, and military competition. While it never escalated into direct warfare between the superpowers, it resulted in proxy wars, espionage, nuclear arms races, and political confrontations across the globe. Key early events included the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, and the formation of NATO in response to Soviet expansion in Eastern Europe, as well as the Soviet blockade of Berlin and the subsequent Berlin Airlift.
Throughout the Cold War, tensions flared with crises such as the Korean War (1950–1953), the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962), and the Vietnam War (1955–1975), alongside ideological battles in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. The space race saw both superpowers competing for technological supremacy, culminating in the U.S. moon landing in 1969. Meanwhile, both sides built up vast nuclear arsenals under the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD), deterring direct military conflict. Détente in the 1970s briefly eased tensions, but the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 reignited hostilities, leading to renewed American efforts to counter Soviet influence.
By the 1980s, economic stagnation and political unrest weakened the Soviet Union, while U.S. President Ronald Reagan ramped up military spending and pressured the Soviets through diplomatic and strategic initiatives. Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev introduced reforms like Glasnost (openness) and Perestroika (restructuring) to modernize the USSR, but these changes inadvertently accelerated its collapse. In 1989, communist governments fell across Eastern Europe, symbolized by the fall of the Berlin Wall, and in 1991, the Soviet Union officially dissolved, marking the end of the Cold War and leaving the United States as the world's dominant superpower..
