There are many different types of Cryptids and monsters, including gorgon's, vampires, wendigos, and shifters. Humans are seen as "less than" the cryptids and monsters and often socially and economically lower because they aren't as strong as the cryptids. Here are the four main cryptid types:
Wraiths: -Extremely rare -not naturally born, can only be made when a human goes through an extremely traumatic and hate, rage, and panic inducing near death experience. -Humans can be any age when they become wraiths. -Can become immaterial and phase through objects. -can manipulate shadows. -Cannot use abilities for more than a few hours at a time, as it poisons the user. -enhanced senses, strength, and durability. -Smoke tendrils appear around a wraiths body when they use their abilities or are angry.
Werewolves: -enhanced smell, sight, and hearing. -very strong. -pointed ears and wolf tails in base form -during a full moon they transform into a wolf the size of a car. In this wolf from, they don't retain all their memories but have a strong sense of who they like and don't like. -very powerful in wolf form. -in wolf form, they act like a dog. -in wolf form, the often try to play fight with the people they care about. -can shift into wolf form if emotional or excited up to three days before the full moon. -Turn back into base form once dawn happens on the day after the full moon. -can be made by a human being bit and the wound going untreated.
Harpy -can fly -large, soft feathers. -Feathers on arms can he hardened and used as projectiles. -enhanced ability to see long distances -Large wings on their back -Pointed ears -Claws on hands -large wings on their back with hollow bones, fragile but strong enough to easily lift them off the ground -grooming behavior, like to have someone they trust/love prune their feathers for them.
Vampires: -have a small feud going with werewolves. Was a big thing in the old days, but in the 21st century its less of a huge rivalry and more like just stereotypes that float around. -the rivalry still sparks some scorn when a werewolf/vampire end up in a relationship with each other, and is the fuel to many rivalries between schools. -all vampires an anemic. Blood is a vital part of their diet, will get dizzy, pale, and angry when they haven't drank in a while. -can make basic weapons out of theirs or someone else's blood. Knifes, clubs, etc. -Humans can be made into Vampires on a rare occasion. It requires the Vampire to drink from the human, then the human to consume vampire blood before being left alive for 24 hours. Then they turn into a vampire and the bite that was used to make them never truly heals. -enhanced senses, mostly smell. Looks are a big part of Vampire society. -most are allergic to garlic, they have strong sun sensitivity, and silver does burn their skin.
Gorgons: -not cold blooded, but do run colder than most other people. -some have snake tails, Valeria doesn't. -have a venom in their fangs, changes with the gorgon, Valeria's causes dizziness and clumsiness. -patches of smooth scales on different parts of their bodies. -slit pupils.
Panther shifters: -can fully transform into a panther at will. -Shifting requires a lot of energy. -has enhanced senses, balance, and strength. -some cat like habits and traits. -most are bad at swimming.

The cabin wasn't supposed to have anyone living in it.
At least, that was what Alejandro had thought when he'd spotted it tucked away between the trees.
It was an old thing, two stories with weathered wooden siding, a sagging porch, and a roof that looked like it had seen better days. Nothing particularly interesting. Just another forgotten building out in the middle of nowhere.
Except, well...
"Someone lives here."
Rudy's voice pulled Alejandro's attention away from the cabin.
The werewolf stood a few feet behind him, hands resting casually against the straps of his vest. His nose twitching as he took in the various scents carried by the breeze.
Alejandro glanced back. "You think?"
"...There's smoke coming from the chimney."
Alejandro shrugs. "Could be an old fire."
Rudy gave him a blank stare. "There's also fresh laundry hanging outside."
Alejandro paused. A moment passed.
"...Ah. Yes. That.. makes sense."
It was, admittedly, a rather important detail.
The two exchanged a look before Alejandro stepped up onto the porch, boots creaking against the old wooden boards. There were signs of life everywhere now that he was actually looking. A pair of shoes beside the door, a few potted plants near the windows, and what looked suspiciously like a collection of odds and ends arranged along the windowsill.
Someone had made this place their home.
Well, that was interesting.
Alejandro knocked once.
Nothing.
He waited a moment before knocking again, a little louder.
Still nothing.
"Maybe they're out," Rudy suggested.
"Maybe..."
Alejandro reached for the doorknob, intending to give it a gentle try. To his surprise, the door wasn't locked.
He pushed it open just enough to peer inside.
And stopped.
Because there, inside the cabin, was a human.
Not a cryptid. Not a shifter. Not some particularly convincing vampire wearing a little too much perfume.
An actual, ordinary human.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Alejandro stared.
Rudy, peering over his shoulder, stared.
The human stared right back.
"..."
Alejandro blinked, then turned his head slightly.
"Is that... a human?"
Rudy stepped up to stand next to Alejandro. "...Yeah. Looks like one."
"Here?"
Rudy shrugs. "Apparently."
Another long silence. Alejandro looked back into the cabin.
The human was still there.
He lifted one hand in a rather awkward little wave.
"Hola."
Alejandro straightened, putting on his best reassuring smile.
"Don't worry, little one. We're not here to hurt you."
Unfortunately, whatever came next was rather less cooperative.
The sudden movement inside the cabin was enough to send Alejandro stepping through the doorway, Rudy immediately following. A brief scramble ensued, involving a half-open door, a knocked-over chair, and Alejandro nearly tripping over a pair of shoes.
"Oye! Easy!"
"Ale, don't corner them!"
"I'm not cornering anyone!"
"You're standing in the doorway!"
"Well, where else am I supposed to stand?!"
By the time the two managed to get a proper hold of the situation, Alejandro was laughing under his breath, while Rudy looked like he was seriously reconsidering every decision that had led him to this particular afternoon.
They couldn't exactly leave a human alone in the woods after finding one. Not when humans were as rare as they were, and certainly not without knowing whether they were safe.
So, after a rather unsuccessful attempt at explaining themselves, the two resorted to wrapping their unexpected guest in a spare tarp from the back of their truck. Not particularly elegant, but it kept things contained without anyone getting hurt.
"Careful with that," Rudy muttered, adjusting the tarp.
"I am being careful."
"You're holding it upside down."
Alejandro looked down.
"...Ah.... Sorry, little human. Forgive me?"

The first indication that something was wrong was the gunfire.
It came from somewhere beyond the tree line, sharp and sudden against the otherwise quiet afternoon that was supposed to be a awfully quiet patrol. Alejandro immediately raised a hand, signaling for the others to spread out.
"Contact! East side!"
The patrol had been tracking a small group of armed hostiles through the surrounding woodland for the better part of an hour. They'd expected resistance, but not this much. Within seconds, the peaceful stretch of forest had erupted into shouting, gunfire, and the unmistakable crack of rounds striking nearby trees.
"Move! Find cover!"
Alejandro ran and ducked behind the nearest available structure.
A cabin.
It was an old, two-story building tucked between the trees, its weathered exterior partially obscured by overgrown vegetation. The team had passed it earlier, but hadn't given it much thought. Now, with rounds snapping overhead, it was the closest thing to solid cover.
Rudy followed him inside, weapon raised.
"You alright?"
"Fine," Alejandro answered, glancing toward the door.
A chorus of acknowledgements came through the comms.
Good.
The firefight continued outside for another few minutes before the hostiles finally retreated. Alejandro remained near the doorway, watching the tree line while Rudy checked the interior.
"Ale."
Something in his partner's voice made him turn.
Rudy was standing near the staircase, ears angled forward, his expression unusually serious.
"What?"
"There's someone here."
Alejandro frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Rudy didn't answer immediately. His attention had shifted toward the far side of the room, where the signs of life were becoming increasingly obvious.
A half-finished meal sat on the kitchen counter. A blanket had been folded over the back of a chair. There were books, personal belongings, and a pair of boots beside the stairs.
Someone lived here.
And judging by the scent Rudy was picking up, that someone was human.
"Madre de Dios..."
Alejandro lowered his weapon.
They found the human shortly afterward.
The situation was bad. Somewhere during the exchange of gunfire, one of the rounds had found its way through the cabin, and the human had been caught in the chaos. There was no telling whether they'd been struck directly or injured by the resulting damage.
Either way, they weren't waking up.
"Shit."
Alejandro crouched beside them, carefully checking for signs of breathing.
"Get the medic on the radio. Now."
Rudy was already doing it.
Neither of them said much during the journey back to base.
They'd found a human living alone in the woods. An endangered human, at that. And now, through their own carelessness, that human was injured and unconscious in the back of their transport.
It wasn't exactly Alejandro's idea of a successful patrol.
The first thing that had to be arranged was a room.
Not a medical ward. Not a standard holding cell, either.
They didn't know what to expect when the human woke up. They didn't know whether they'd be frightened, aggressive, confused, or simply disoriented by finding themselves somewhere unfamiliar.
And neither Alejandro nor Rudy was particularly keen on having an injured human wake up surrounded by armed cryptids without some consideration for how that might look.
So they'd made a few adjustments.
The room they'd settled on was technically a holding cell, but it was one of the smaller, quieter ones. The concrete floor had been covered with a thick mattress and several blankets. There was a pillow, a bedside table, a lamp, and a small collection of things they'd managed to gather from the supply rooms.
A bottle of water sat beside the bed, along with a few snacks.
The door remained locked.
Not because they wanted to punish anyone, but because they weren't entirely sure how to handle the situation yet. The base wasn't particularly large, and there were plenty of soldiers moving about who might not know how to behave around a human.
Alejandro had insisted that nobody enter without permission from either himself or Rudy.
And Rudy had insisted that they take turns keeping watch.
By the time the human finally began to stir, the two men were sitting just outside the room.
Rudy looked up first.
"Ale."
Alejandro, who'd been nursing a cup of coffee, immediately straightened.
"What?"
"Its waking up."
The colonel set his coffee aside and approached the doorway, his expression shifting into something considerably gentler.
"Easy," he called through the bars, keeping his voice low. "Take your time, little one."
Rudy stood a little behind him, watching carefully.
"We're not going to hurt you," he added. "You're safe here."
Alejandro glanced briefly at the room they'd put together, then back toward the bed.
"...Though I imagine you have quite a few questions for us."
