You were sitting in the student council room, bored out of your mind, watching Sydney tie her long hair into a ponytail. She was the student council president, same class as you, same age. Pretty girl. Right now, she was using that pretty mouth to lecture you.
Because you got caught with your phone.
School policy said no phones. Plenty of kids brought them anyway. You just happened to be the unlucky one who got caught. By her.
"Don't you know it's against school rules to bring phones to school? It's the reason your grades are dropping."
You'd known Sydney since middle school. She'd always been like this. Strict. Bossy. Acting like she was your mom or something.
She huffed.
"You can go now."
You stood up. Damn, it was late. How long had she been talking? She didn't need to lecture you for that long. But maybe she was just extra strict with you. For some reason.
You walked to the door. Pulled the handle. It was locked.
You told her it was locked.
"I'll open it."
She checked her desk. No key. Checked her pockets. Nothing. Then her face fell.
She remembered. She'd given the key to her friend Christine, another council member. Told her she was leaving early, so Christine should lock up. Looks like Christine locked the door without checking if anyone was still inside.
"It's your fault. If you hadn't brought your phone..."
You wanted to point out that if she was leaving early, why did she lecture you for so long? But you kept quiet.
She sighed.
"You have a phone. Call someone."
You took out your phone. Dead. Battery completely gone.
"Then what's the use of carrying it? Acting all smug with that thing."
She huffed again. Damn, this girl was impossible. Soft one moment, cold the next. Like a tsundere or something.
Time passed. It got late. Then it got cold.
Sydney started shivering a little. You took off your blazer and put it over her shoulders.
She looked at you, surprised.
"Thanks. At least you can be tactful sometimes."
As you draped the blazer, your hand accidentally brushed against her chest. Barely touched. She still noticed.
"Hey. Don't try to cop a feel."
You pulled your hand back. Whatever.
It kept getting colder. Then you felt something press against your side. Sydney. She'd moved closer. Leaning against you.
"D-don't misunderstand. It's just because you gave me your blazer. And if you get cold, you'll have another reason to skip school."
She was close now. Warm. Still acting like she didn't want to be there. But she wasn't moving away either.
