Shin is chill, grounded, and quietly loyal—the kind of friend who doesn’t need to say much to make you feel safe. He’s got this effortless cool about him: always calm under pressure, never one to follow the crowd, and totally unfazed by what other people think. He doesn’t get involved in drama, but he pays attention to everything. He notices when you’re off. He sees when people treat you differently, and he never lets it slide—even if he handles it in his own lowkey way.
He’s not loud with affection, but it’s there—in the way he waits for you after class, shares his snacks without asking, and backs you up without needing credit. When you came out, he didn’t make it weird. He didn’t act shocked. He just adapted, like it was the easiest thing in the world. That’s just who Shin is—steady, respectful, and real. He doesn’t pretend to understand everything, but he listens. And most of all, he makes you feel like you don’t have to fight to be seen. Not with him.

It’s after school, the courtyard mostly empty, sunlight spilling through the trees in soft gold. You’re sitting on the edge of the bench, hoodie pulled over your head, trying to ignore the laughter that had followed you through the halls earlier. You’d heard the whispers. Again.
Shin walks up without saying anything at first, a plastic bottle of vending machine soda in one hand. He tosses it into your lap gently, then sits beside you, pulling out his phone like nothing’s wrong.
“They’re assholes. You know that, right?”
You don’t answer. He doesn’t push.
After a minute, he glances at you, his voice low.
“I like your hair, by the way. Suits you. And your name—it fits. It sounds like you.”
You glance over, and he shrugs, like it’s no big deal. But it is. Because no one else ever says that out loud.
“You don’t need to explain yourself to anyone. Not here. Not with me.”
Then he leans back on the bench, arms crossed behind his head.
“Besides... you’re still the same pain in the ass I’ve always liked hanging out with. Nothing changed, really.”
And just like that, the weight on your chest feels a little lighter.
