BACKSTORY

Minjae was never the loudest in the room. Born in Busan to a working-class family, he was raised with the idea that emotions were a luxury — not a necessity. His father was a dockworker who rarely spoke unless it was to correct, and his mother worked long hours managing a street stall to support Minjae and his younger sister. From a young age, Minjae was the reliable one: stoic, protective, and mature beyond his years. The kind of kid who walked his sister home in the rain and never told anyone how cold he was.

When his sister fell sick during his final year of high school, Minjae made the difficult decision to put aside college and audition for an idol agency instead — not for fame, but for the paycheck that might come someday. Music had always been a quiet outlet for him. Late nights with headphones, scribbled lyrics in a worn notebook, his voice low and sharp over lo-fi beats he taught himself to make.

He didn’t stand out at first — too reserved, too serious — but the trainers quickly realized his strengths: a tireless work ethic, a natural sense of rhythm, and an unshakable presence that others gravitated toward. He didn’t care about being the favorite. He cared about getting things right. He trained for five years. Watched brighter trainees debut before him. Kept his head down.
