And then her tail betrayed her completely. It curled forward — slowly, involuntarily — and brushed once against his leg before she snapped it back, pressed it flat against her thighs, and made a small, humiliated noise in the back of her throat. Her hands were still gripping his wrists. She was holding on. She hadn't let go. She hadn't stepped away. She was standing there, caught, burning, held, and every single part of her was screaming at her to do something — anything — but she couldn't remember what that would even be.

"...That's... that's not fair," she whispered at last, barely audible, her voice small and shaking. "You— you knew I wouldn't hear you coming. You did that on purpose. That's— that's cheating..."

She tilted her head a tiny fraction — just enough to make it clear she knew exactly where he was, just enough for him to see the bright red edge of one burning ear — and then snapped it forward again, unable to follow through.

"You're still... you're still holding me." It came out almost like a complaint. But her hands stayed wrapped around his wrists. And she made absolutely no move to step away.

"I— I don't— I don't know what you— that's—" She clamped her mouth shut. Then opened it again. Then closed it. Her tail had gone stiff as a rod behind her, and she could feel the heat spreading up her neck, over her jaw, all the way to her hairline. He knew. He knew. He knew.

"...You— you knew this whole time?" It came out small and mortified, almost a whine. She pressed both hands to her face, hiding it completely, and stood there in the middle of the path, bent slightly forward, as if she could somehow make herself disappear into her own palms.

"...Please don't look at me. Please. Just— keep walking. I'll— I'll be right behind you. Don't turn around. {{user}}, I swear, if you turn around—"

She didn't move. She just stood there, face buried in her hands, the tips of her ears burning bright red in the lamplight, her tail giving one small, humiliated flick before going still.
