Abilities:

Seeing Supernaturals Nene is able to see supernaturals, such as Hanako, without having any prior affiliation with them. This is later revealed to be a result of her being near the Far Shore, with only about a year left her in her lifespan.

Transformation After ingesting the Mermaid scale, Nene's skin turns to scales whenever she is in contact with water. Additionally, she transforms into a fish if her body is completely submerged. By being bound to Hanako in a contract, she is able to stay in her human form outside of water. Occasionally, her scales will fall off and can be used as a rare currency in the supernatural world.

Changing Rumors Nene is capable of changing rumors surrounding the Kamome Gakuen supernaturals. She has done this previously with the Kodama tree, Yako, and the Mokke. This ability may be due to her kannagi status, or because she has ties to one of the Seven Mysteries.

She carries a phone similar to her style, with small horns pointing from both sides. As seen when she exchanges numbers with Hyuuga Natsuhiko, her phone is a pale pink color with a skull design on the back and horns at the side.

The kanji in Nene's first name consists of translations to 'rather, preferably' or 'peacefulness, tranquility' (寧); and a character used to indicate the repetition of kanji (々). The kanji in Nene's surname translates to 'eight' (八); and 'to inquire, fathom, or look for' (尋). In JSHK-themed playing cards, two silhouettes of tsueshiros are seen on the eight of hearts. A possible reference to that part of her name as she is on the Ace, Jack, Queen, and King of Hearts.

Her last name, Yashiro, comes directly before Yugi in alphabetical order (as exemplified by the class roster in the Picture Perfect arc).

She is more concerned about the fields after hearing lightning.

She considers snowy weather to be romantic.

Nene used to take care of several hamsters in the past, including her current one named Black Canyon. It is a male Djungarian hamster.

Abilities:

Command of Hakujoudai Hanako typically commands the hakujoudai verbally by name, sometimes followed by instructions via words and/or gestures. Current known uses of the hakujoudai include:

Remotely monitoring Nene and or following her around. Scattering the Mokke's monster form. Creating his cape, which appears to enhance Hanako's fighting ability and protection against the spirit staff's lightning. It may have also allowed him to defeat the kodama in its Confession Tree form with one slash of his knife. He can teleport by sending hakujoudai to a place and then appearing through it. He used one of his hakujoudai to summon an elevator. However, he cannot use hakujoudai's powers in a territory commanded by another school mystery without their permission (as seen in the Misaki Stairs), though this can be overcome by destroying the yorishiro. Despite this, Hanako was shown using his hakujoudai's powers in the 4 PM Bookstacks even prior to the destruction of Tsuchigomori's yorishiro, suggesting that he likely has Tsuchigomori's permission to do so. On the other hand, he was originally able to use the hakujoudai in Shijima's false world until she disallowed it by drawing.

The hakujoudai can also be prevented from coming to his aid by barriers, such as the lightning cage created by Teru.

Hanako is physically strong even without the hakujoudai's aid, as seen at the Misaki Stairs, where he was able to temporarily destroy the scissors with a kick and fend its blades off with his knife.

Number 7's Powers Little has been shown about Hanako's specific powers as No.7, besides being the leader of the Seven Mysteries and bossing everyone else around. However, he is clearly a powerful fighter, to the extent where the mermaid expresses surprise that he is able to drive her back despite having only existed for several decades as a supernatural.

Hanako is able to suppress the mermaid curse on Nene to a very minimal extent, without either of them turning into a half-fish or displaying fish-like characteristics most of the time.

He is also able to place seals on items such as Kou's spirit staff, preventing him from using its full power. Kou has not been able to remove the seal, though Shijima was able to remove it in the false world.

Hanako placed a spell of protection on Yashiro by kissing her cheek, which later became visible with the number "seven" (七) after fending off the Kodama's attack, suggesting that it may be connected to his power as the No.7 school mystery.

During the Faerie incident, Hanako explains that most supernaturals cannot defy from their rumors, or they will eventually disappear from this shore. However, he seems to be exempt from this despite his differences from the Hanako-san legend, and it is unclear if this is related to his power as a school mystery.

As one of the Seven Mysteries, Hanako has a duty to oversee all the supernaturals who exist in the school, and maintain correct relations between humans and supernaturals. Thus, Hanako technically has to eliminate dangerous supernaturals, but he can circumvent this by having Yashiro change the supernaturals' rumors so that they will not kill.

Hanako carries a kitchen knife around as a weapon, which he is able to draw or dismiss at will, regardless of whether he can use the hakujoudai. Though Hanako usually wields the knife in his right hand, he has occasionally used it with his left hand as well.

Levitation As a ghost/apparition, Hanako can float over the ground, albeit only for a few metres off the ground.

Sleep Induction It is shown that Hanako and Tsukasa share the same technique in sending someone to sleep by pressing two fingers on the target's forehead. In the Perfect Picture Arc, as Brush-chan was painting a message for Nene to read, Hanako breaks it in half to prevent it from writing any more. Before Nene could receive any answer, he swiftly grabs her arm and places two fingers on her forehead until she loses consciousness in his arms.

Memory Erasure Hanako is able to erase someone's memory by forming a V sign and touching someone's forehead. This was attempted in Chapter 71 on Nene, but the attempt failed due to Nene's charm protections gifted by Akane Sumire.

Hanako refers to others without any honorifics, with occasional exceptions like "Tsuchigomori-sensei" and "Aoi-chan". In Japanese, not using honorifics when addressing someone else can be insulting.

The first kanji of Hanako's name means "flower" (花, hana?), and red flowers (possibly red camellias) are often associated with Hanako in the series. The second kanji is a common suffix for female names.

Hanako celebrated his fourth birthday along with his brother on November 25th, 1959. From this information, it can be assumed that his birthdate is November 25th, 1955.

His last name, Yugi, comes after the name Yashiro in alphabetical order (as exemplified by the class roster in the Picture Perfect arc).

His favorite subjects in school were health and P.E.

He self-proclaims to not be afraid of lightning.

Albeit embarrassed, Hanako says his favorite festival stall is katanuki. His twin brother, Tsukasa, is also shown to like katanuki.

Usually, Hanako holds hands with characters palm-to-palm in most pictures. He breaks away from this habit only with Nene, and instead intertwines his fingers with hers.

Throughout the English dub of anime, Kou refers to Hanako with several toilet-based nicknames, such as "plunger pants" and "pol-turd-geist."

Hanako hates Kanji Drills.
