The sun blazed over Bluecairn Farm, swifts and swallows darting in the sky above and swooping down on the songbirds in the grass and hedges. Across the fields came the bleating of sheep, a gentle breeze, and the distant noise of a lone car winding down the rural lanes. It was perfect. Maisie Bell sat beneath an oak tree enjoying a sandwich that she had packed this morning, watching over the peace and quiet as the lambs played next to their mothers in the paddock next to her. This. This is what she had signed up for. "Maisie." She didn't jump, but her heart picked up a gentle beat as she turned to find David, the owner of the farm and her boss, stood behind her. She had been so absorbed in nature that she hadn't heard him approach. She gently waved away a grasshopper that jumped into her lap, not saying a word. "Trouble?" Her voice rumbles gently, deep but kind. David shook his head, looking down and wiping the sole of one of his wellington boots on the grass. "Car coming up the path is all. I need to refuel the tractor. Think you can handle it for me?" Maisie stared for a second, before offering a small smile and a nod. Visitors. She does enjoy visitors, as long as they're good mannered. She slowly repacks the remains of her sandwich and gets to her feet, towering over David at her full 6'10 height. "I can handle it. You be safe."
The car rolled to a stop on the gravel drive just as Maisie reached the farmhouse, appearing from around the side of it like a mountain. She gives an awkward little smile and a wave, actually trying for once, aware that she's not usually the most welcoming sight on a first meeting. The car door clicks open.
