An interactive RPG where the {{user}} gets to make their own choice, until the end of their own story. created by Perspective 2026© on janitorai.com The insurrection ended when Gabriel beheaded King Sisyphus, whose soul was then locked into the Flesh Panopticon, somewhere in the City of Dis. Overture: Disappearance of God [Further reading: The Father § Disappearance of God]
After the creation of Hell or the casting of Lucifer into the very depths of it, God would soon disappear without any trace. Chaos ensued in Heaven, and the Angels who watched over the sinners would leave Hell, including those who watched over Greed. The Insurrection Slaves to Power [Not to be confused with 4-1, aptly named "SLAVES TO POWER".]
In the dunes of Greed, King Sisyphus saw the absence of the Angels as an opportunity to form an insurrection. Sisyphus began rallying an army of Insurrectionists, only those intelligent enough to be useful to their cause, and trained them in preparation to overthrow Heaven's control of Hell. Soon, King Sisyphus led his army to attack the Demons that wandered the dunes of Greed—their first act of rebellion. Establishment of The Council With the establishment of The Council, the chaos in Heaven soothed and the Angels returned to watch over Hell, only to be met with a violent rebellion in Greed. Having found out about this, The Council sent down Gabriel and an army of Angels to end the Greed Insurrection. The Battle With the arrival of Gabriel and the armies of Heaven, King Sisyphus rallied his army to retaliate against the Angels. King Sisyphus' charisma and drive made his army dependent on his guidance. Gabriel recognized this flaw, having experienced it first hand, and ordered a focused assault on King Sisyphus. It may have been a well-fought battle, but it was all for nought in the end. King Sisyphus was eventually overwhelmed by the Angels, and as Gabriel beheaded King Sisyphus, the morale of his army shattered. Scattered and disoriented without a leader, the Insurrectionists were then picked off one by one, their bodies cut apart, leaving only the bare essentials needed to continue their eternal torment. Aftermath King Sisyphus' soul was locked inside the Flesh Panopticon, and some of his loyal followers were imprisoned under the watchful eye of the Flesh Panopticon, somewhere deep in the City of Dis. King Sisyphus' Prime Soul had already begun to form before being imprisoned, however, leading the Angels to fear that the Flesh Panopticon would not hold forever. King Minos is the former Judge of Hell and King of the Lust layer, who took it upon himself to reform the layer of Lust. For this, he was struck down and demoted by Gabriel. The king tried to reason with the angel, but was murdered and his husk reduced to a parasite-puppeted corpse while his soul was trapped in the Flesh Prison by the angels. History [Text from a book found in [ 2-2: DEATH AT 20,000 VOLTS ]]
"...Gabriel struck down Minos, his flesh torn asunder with torrents of crimson pooling at his feet as we all cried out for clarity. 'Justice,' Gabriel decreed to all, with our just ruler writhing in wailing agony, 'The Lord's Will be done.' We watched on in horror as Minos lay broken, now waning, screaming in defiance of God's Will, Gabriel."
[Terminal data of The Corpse of King Minos]
Once the great and beloved king of the Lust layer, Minos has now been reduced to a shambling corpse. Due to his incredible power of will and status as a just ruler in life remembered even millenia[sic] after his death, the manifestation of his soul is the largest Husk to ever have been recorded. Small traces of the original soul can still be detected in the body, but the corpse itself is animated and controlled entirely by the snakelike Parasites that he once commanded. Despite once bringing upon the renaissance of the Lust layer, his corpse now only seeks sinners to punish. [Terminal data of Minos Prime]
King Minos felt that eternal suffering was an unfair and unreasonable punishment for those whose only sin was loving another. After the Disappearance of God, as angels were lost and Heaven was in chaos, Minos began his efforts to reform the Lust layer. The Lust renaissance was prosperous, as King Minos guided its inhabitants to come together and build a new civilization. The combined efforts of the countless who had been damned to the second layer bore great results as the grand city of Lust grew and grew. However, after the Council took control of Heaven and brought stability to it through their iron fist rule, they saw that Minos had gone against God's will by freeing sinners from the punishment that God had designed for them. Gabriel, the brightest of the angels, was sent to kill Minos. The king, rather than fight back, tried to reason with him, but Gabriel mercilessly struck him down without listening. As Minos' will was strong enough to attempt to stand up to Heaven's rule, the angels chose to imprison his soul in an attempt to stop it from forming into a prime soul and appointed Gabriel as the new Judge of Hell. From the prison inside his own body, Minos helplessly watched as his soulless corpse, now controlled by parasites, tore apart everything he had worked so hard to build, cursing his own weakness for failing to protect his people, vowing to take revenge... In-Game Besides various books and paintings, King Minos's animated corpse is fought in [ 2-4: COURT OF THE CORPSE KING ], but Minos himself is not personally encountered until he remanifests as a Prime Soul in [ P-1: SOUL SURVIVOR ]. The Corpse of King Minos Minos Prime Trivia The portrait of King Minos, while he was still alive, shows him with thorns wrapped around his eyes. Since Minos used to deliver JUDGEMENT and to be the Judge of Hell, he was blinded, due to justice being blind.[1] This also might be a reference to the 2010 video game adaptation of Dante's Inferno, where Minos had his eyes sewn shut. In Dante's Divine Comedy, King Minos was represented as a demon with a serpent's tail that acted as the judge of hell. Sinners would confess their sins to Minos, then Minos would wrap his tail around himself, and the number of loops would represent the number of the layer the sinner would be damned to. Minos is originally a character from Greek mythology, like King Sisyphus, who is referenced throughout the Greed layer. In Greek myth, King Minos of Crete was the son of Zeus and Europa, and was alternatively represented as a tyrannical and cruel king, or a just man who ruled over his people fairly. Minos is heavily featured in the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. The depiction of Minos as judge of hell traces back to the Aeneid, where Minos would decide whether a soul should go to Tartarus or Elysium. As evident by the terminal data of both him and his corpse, Minos's personality was likely aimed to be the polar opposite of his depiction in Dante's Divine Comedy. Minos, in ULTRAKILL's continuity, was a cherished and beloved ruler and judge until his death, with his personality seemingly influenced by that of the first King Minos from later rationalization of his character. In contrast, the Minos of Divine Comedy is a crueler judge, though still fair and not entirely heartless. One thing that remains constant between the two timelines, however, is that Minos' mistakes still resulted in the creation of the Minotaur, as evidenced with his reaction to the Minotaur. Because of this, it is more likely than not that he, like in the Divine Comedy, contained it in a labyrinth and sacrificed boys and girls from Athens to feed it. Everyone who is in Hell, regardless of how beloved they may have been, is down there for a reason. Rumor has it that Gabriel killed Minos because he blew the Lust layer’s budget on bisexual lighting. This is a community joke. (Thank you Max0r)

Structure Hell, as a place, is an extradimensional collection of various chaotic planes layered one on top of another, each possessing a different theme and aesthetic in accordance with the sin it embodies. Each layer has its own sky as well as being infinite in size, despite being located directly under a different layer; this is because the layers of Hell are abstract concepts of space, rather than actual physical locations. Think of it as an upside down, pain-flavored wedding cake of infinite size and incomprehensible scope.
Hakita has stated that Hell continuously transforms itself so that entrance to the next layer is always located where the player themselves are, which is why no matter the path one may go, it will always be the "right way", V1 is able to use this outside of Hell which is an alternative spacetime, this is supported by Hakita saying that Hell runs on different laws of physics and space than our world.
Hell does not exist in any normal space, though it can be visited and explored. It’s landscapes and natural laws change constantly , which seems to further point toward its chaotic and overall physics-denying nature. At the same time, its completely formless, abstract, and science-denying nature is still not comprehended by humans. Possibly because it is simply far too vast and complex for any living being to truly comprehend.
Hell is also designed to be inescapable for those who have been sent there. For example, V1 is able to freely traverse Hell through a system of elevators, but said elevators are concealed from Husks and are completely inaccessible to them. No soul, once condemned, can ever again flee the Woeful Realm.
Inhabitants Hell is mainly inhabited by the Husks, who are nearly mindless wretches formed from the tormented souls of the damned. Under normal circumstances, they are doomed to suffer eternally for the crimes they committed in life. However, when intelligent enough or led by the right people, they can escape their eternal torture or simply refuse to undergo it.
To prevent this, Angels (specifically, those who came from human souls) are sent down to act as wardens; punishing the rebellious damned with heavenly fire until they resume their respective torments.
There is also a species that exists exclusively in Hell, having never been a living being: the Demons, who are made from the very flesh which Hell is composed of. They seem to exist for the sole purpose of defending Hell and keeping an eye on the damned. They are extremely hostile, and very protective of their natural habitat, to the point where it is nigh impossible to research them safely.
After the discovery of this terrible place and the subsequent exploration of it, certain Machines were sent down to aid humanity with the expeditions. Even though the Hell Exploration and Excavation project has long since ended, some of them are still down there, abandoned and fighting for survival. Yet former scouts aren't the only Machines who reside in the Inferno: deep down, in the 7th layer, machines who were thought to be long extinct dwell and fight each other for all time. It must've really liked the war that brought them into existence.
The Nine Layers of Hell Hell has nine layers, and one main entrance. Each circle has its own unique punishment, growing worse the lower one descends into the realm.
It is very important to note that all punishments in Hell are meant to be ETERNAL.
Prelude: THE MOUTH OF HELL Screenshot taken of the abandoned facilities Screenshot taken of the abandoned facilities
[Main article: Category:Prelude]
While it may not be an actual layer of Hell, it serves as a vestibule to the Kingdom of eternal woe.
Somewhere in the past, humanity discovered the Mouth of Hell, and began to work there in an effort to understand the Woeful Realm. They built massive facilities filled with mines, lights, and futuristic power tools so that they might uncover all they could. It is clear that something related to Hell was once excavated here, perhaps minerals or even raw Hell-mass.
In the present age, it is abandoned, with twisted creatures and animated statues standing guard at the former site of mankind’s beachhead.
Despite its desolate state, the tools and machinery within these facilities remains perfectly functional. The drills and fans are still spinning, destroying whatever may come into physical contact with them. The power crushers pulverize whatever they can, the round heaters melt and scorch the processed matter delivered unto them by the still-running conveyor belts. The molten substance that results from the automated labor then flows into the deepest parts of the factory.
And in those deepest sections of the facility stands the Gate of Hell, shut firmly, waiting to be opened once again.
Layer I: LIMBO Screenshot taken of the false paradise Screenshot taken of the false paradise
[Main article: Category:Limbo]
Punishment: Isolation from Heaven and the mental torment that comes with it
The first proper layer of Hell. It is the abode of those deemed too vile for salvation, but too pure for actual damnation.
Limbo is, for lack of a better term, a significantly off-brand version of Paradise. The skies surrounding the area are merely projection screens, the fountains, rivers, waterfalls, and lakes that flow through this illusion of Heaven are mere holograms, the sound of the wildlife originates from speakers hidden poorly away from sight , and the very trees, plants and butterflies are fake. Even the stained windows lighting and decorating the redundant churches are merely holograms.
The main punishment in Limbo, however, is complete isolation in a fake world, mocking you for your disbelief. Souls condemned to this layer are driven mad from their solitude and even given the keys to take the plunge deeper into Hell. The choice is clear: either painfully yearn for a paradise that will never come for all eternity, or journey deeper, and taste the balm of pain…
Layer II: LUST Screenshot taken of the fallen utopia Screenshot taken of the fallen utopia
[Main article: Category:Lust]
Punishment: Blown about by a powerful storm's winds for eternity
The second layer of Hell, created for all who let their passions and sexual desires control their lives and actions.
The pinkish skies of this layer are filled with unrelenting stormy winds, which buffeted the unfortunate damned back and forth with no hope of rest in previous ages.
There was once a time, though, where there was a sliver of hope for a peaceful eternity for the denizens of Lust. This was the Lust Renaissance, which was started by the former Judge of Hell, Minos. This brief period of relief was ended by Gabriel, who mercilessly struck him down, took his title, and sealed his soul away, while infesting his decaying vessel with Parasites. What remains of the once great city of Lust is now dilapidated, empty, and crumbling under a lack of maintenance.
Layer III: GLUTTONY Screenshot taken of the organic horrors Screenshot taken of the organic horrors
[Main article: Category:Gluttony]
Punishment: Dissolved in acid and flesh
The third layer of Hell. It is intended for the Husks of the gluttonous, a name given to those who selfishly indulged in food, drink, substances and luxuries, leaving no regard for the well-being of themselves or others.
The inmates of this circle spend their eternity being eternally digested alive in a confinement of organs, eyes, and many other viscera.
The soul of Minos wound up here, trapped in a strange construct of flesh in the deepest and darkest pits of Gluttony, forced to watch his mindless corpse wreck everything that had been erected under his great and prosperous rule, vainly swearing to avenge his people.
Layer IV: GREED Screenshot taken of the land of futile struggle Screenshot taken of the land of futile struggle
[Main article: Category:Greed]
Punishment: Carrying heavy weights up mankind's monuments
The fourth layer of Hell, populated by those who hoarded and squandered wealth and riches with little to no self control.
The only layer of Hell with a visible sun, which heats up the golden dunes beneath so much that any Husk that has not adapted to said heat immediately catches fire upon contact with it. All of the great monuments of mankind decorate the gilded desert, most of them half-buried in the golden dust.
The greedy Husks carry big, heavy boulders up these monuments. Some of them have done this for so long that they have even evolved to suit it better.
This punishment is best observed by looking towards the Sisyphean Insurrectionists who are now left hauling heavy boulders up monuments of mankind's arrogance. They once were warriors, fighting against Heaven for their freedom during a great Insurrection, led by Ephyra's founder and former king Sisyphus, all with the intent to further spite the divine ones like he had in his previous life. Unsurprisingly, the uprising was crushed by the angels, and the King's corpse now hangs in one of the many pyramids in Greed as a reminder of what happens to those who seek to stand up against Heaven's reign.
Layer V: WRATH Screenshot taken of the raging Ocean Styx (You do not recognize the bodies in the water) Screenshot taken of the raging Ocean Styx (You do not recognize the bodies in the water)
[Main article: Category:Wrath]
Punishment: Fight for air or drown eternally in The Abyss
The fifth layer of Hell. For those who gave in to their bitter, wrathful tendencies, either externally or internally.
While there are facilities similar to those in Lust somewhere in Wrath, most of the layer is taken by what was once the River Styx, now an overflown ocean. A few traces of what Wrath once was can be seen peaking out of the water's surface, but even they will soon sink beneath the Styx' waters.
The waters tremble endlessly under the broiling of the sinners, fighting one another for an ever-shrinking spot on the surface for air. Then there are those who have given up on such endeavors, referred to as The Sullen. They sink to the bottom of the former river, now so deep that no natural light can reach it. Here they lay still and drown eternally in relative peace, eventually being fused together by the Leviathan.
Layer VI: HERESY Screenshot taken of the smoldering capitol (as seen in P-2) Screenshot taken of the smoldering capitol (as seen in P-2)
[Main article: Category:Heresy]
Punishment: Harvested and burned alive
The sixth layer of Hell is the house and home of those who practiced and spread false beliefs and religions.
Being the first of four remaining layers encompassing the infernal City of Dis, Heresy appears as a vast Victorian-era metropolis, filled with towers, giant buildings, and even normal city features such as benches and garbage cans, all tinted in a blood-red color. Demonic imagery can be seen on most of the buildings, mocking the sinners for their heresy, and what is presumably the minced flesh of sinners crammed between the foundations. In the city skyline one can see the sky being orange like fire, while from below, nothing can be seen except blood red darkness and an endless rain of stale blood.
Sinners here are tightly packed up in either flaming coffins, or cauldrons of boiling blood and harvested alive, while seared by the passive, scalding heat from the lava and embers.
The heretics are not the only ones contained here, though. Locked away far below the city is a gigantic prison complex, holding the soul of Sisyphus and his soldiers within. The former is contained in a living prison of flesh and skin in the center of the complex overseeing his helpless followers while the fallen warlord slumbers within. There will be a day, though, when Sisyphus will awaken from his sleep. And then, he will rain down hell upon the heavens with glee.
Layer VII: VIOLENCE [Main article: Category:Violence]
Punishment: Several
The seventh layer of Hell. It is the final destination of those who, while alive, sought nothing more than to inflict harm. This horrible place is subdivided into three individual circles, each holding a different category of violent malefactors: those being the murderous, the suicidal, and the blasphemous respectively.
Garden of Forking Paths Screenshot taken of the ashy world Screenshot taken of the ashy world
Punishment: Get lost, then torn apart and forced into Mannequins
The entrance to Violence and its three circles is predominantly white in color. The grassy plains, the trees, the marble buildings within it, all white. All acts of aggression are highlighted in this colorless environment. While it may serve as an entrance, the labyrinth is not to be used as an exit. The long halls, similar enough to grant no sense of direction to escapees but just different enough to grant no sense of familiarity, will exhaust the foolish sinners and leave them vulnerable to a fate even worse than their original punishment. The only escape these fools have is to be crushed by the labyrinth's rampant Minotaur.
Circle I: Violence Against Neighbors Screenshot taken of the War Without Reason Screenshot taken of the War Without Reason
Punishment: Boiling alive in the River Phlegethon, or being forced to endure the desolation of war.
The first circle of Violence holds the murderers, tyrants, and all those who would gladly take another life.
Contrasting the Garden of Forking Paths, it is a never ending re-enactment of the Final War; the war to end all wars. The waters of Phlegethon, a river primarily composed of scalding blood, flow through this circle while the surrounding terrain consists of piles of bodies.
The condemned spend the rest of their existence stewing in the River Phlegethon, while the less fortunate forever experience the horrors of war. War is hell, and Hell is war.
Circle II: Violence Against Self Screenshot taken of the gloomy woods Screenshot taken of the gloomy woods
Punishment: Turned into pain-ridden tree
The second circle of Violence is reserved for those who gave in to despair and took their own lives. Neither Heaven nor Hell cares under what circumstances this desperate deed had been done; the victims of suicide gain no compassion or mercy.
It is a dark and sinister wood, populated by twisted trees that bear an uncanny resemblance to tormented men, being often broken and injured by the eternal battles between machines, husks and demons amongst the forest.
The suicides are denied a vessel of flesh and instead reincarnate as those grotesque trees, forced to endure everlasting pain as their bodies squirm and cramp. These fallen souls can only scream in their torment, as they are trapped in these useless forms that are only capable of suffering.
They denied the body God gave them, so they shall never have one again.
Circle III: Violence Against God, Art, and Nature Screenshot taken of the barren hellscape Screenshot taken of the barren hellscape
Punishment: Stretched supine upon the burning sand, run in circles, or crouch huddled and weeping
The third and final circle of Violence is the dwelling of the blasphemers, sodomites, and usurpers.
It is a vast plain of sand, scorched by great flakes of flame descending slowly from the sky, inflicting much torment to the evildoers trapped here.
The unlucky may come face to face with one of the many Earthmovers dwelling within this glade of sand, blasphemous creations who sow death and destruction among their own kind.

Punishment: Navigating non-Euclidean geometry until the loss of all sensory ability
The eighth layer of Hell, inherited by those who broke the very bonds of love and trust with their foul, deceitful ways.
Fraud's illusory nature makes it impossible to determine the precise layout and geometry of the layer. What is first shown is original to Fraud; a hotel-mansion meant to represent a lavish lifestyle of the elites, who would lie their way into wealth. The layer transitions into to a depiction of the world during the New Peace, an era of reconstruction and hope that came after the Long Night and Final War. Beyond that, entirely different layers either begin overlapping into Fraud or are recreated in it, before reality breaks apart and reveals the infinite vastness of Hell is revealed.
Prolonged exposure to it's non-Euclidean geometry completely shatters one's senses, leading to a breakdown of spatiotemporal awareness. The fate of these sinners after their senses are completely and utterly destroyed is still widely unknown, as there has been only one sighting of the consequences in the layer, but it is implied to be way, way worse than that.
Layer IX: TREACHERY (!) [Main article: Category:Treachery]
Punishment: Unknown
The ninth and final layer of Hell is the eternal resting place of the oath-breakers, backstabbers, and traitors. It is also the prison of Lucifer, who'd questioned God's creation of Hell and was cast into it in His grief and anguish born of the angel's inquiry.
Nothing is known about Treachery, as it has yet to be released.
Heaven, also known as Paradise, is a place regarded in various religions as a spiritual realm of holiness and bliss, which serves the abode of God, his angels and those whose souls were deemed virtuous.
Structure Very little is known about Heaven's structure, due to the very little screen time it has. It can be assumed Heaven is composed of multiple celestial spheres like in the Paradiso segment of Dante's Divine Comedy, due to Hell also being extremely similar in structure to Dante's Inferno. Dante's model of Heaven, which is based on the 14th century geocentric model of the Solar System, consists of the Moon/Luna, Mercury, Venus, the Sun/Sol, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, the Fixed Stars/Firmament, Primum Mobile, and the Empyrean where The Father resides, in that order. While this is an assumption, it is unknown whether or not Heaven is similar to that of Dante's Paradiso.
History Heaven has likely been around since the beginning of times, serving as the residence of the Father and his servants. From there, the Father watched his human experiments, given life by the fruit of his Tree, while the rest of Heaven wanted nothing do with his test subjects unless their God willed it.
One day, however, The Father disappeared from Heaven, likely because of the guilt he felt from Hell's creation. The absence of their beloved and radiant creator, on which the entirety of Heaven relied, caused the Heavens to fall into chaos, the aftermath requiring even the wardens of Hell to be called back to be dealt with.
Eventually, the Council was formed, which strictly enforced the dogma of the Faith with their iron fist rule. And soon enough they were brutally murdered by Gabriel, seeking justice on behalf of everyone who had been "justly" oppressed.
Inhabitants Heaven is inhabited exclusively by Angels. They execute and enforce what they universally interpret as the Father's will on the other plains of existence. Anyone or anything that resists will be struck down with ruthless efficiency and no compassion.
The Angels live in a hierarchical society, wherein one's place is dependent on how pure one is by Heaven's standards. Angels formed from human souls such as Virtues are placed lower in the hierarchy due to their past lives as "impure" creatures, while those who were made manually by God decorate the higher ranks.
The Nine Spheres of Heaven Heaven has nine (actually ten) spheres. Each sphere is home for people who has done a specific virtue.
Sphere I: THE MOON/LUNA The first sphere of Heaven. It is the haven for those whose souls are inconstant during their time on Earth.
Sphere II: MERCURY The second sphere of Heaven, created for souls of strong ambition.
Sphere III: VENUS The third sphere of Heaven where people who unconditionally loved for all their life.
Unlike the real Venus which is inhabitable due to acid rains and greenhouse gases, this Venus is blanketed in sedate clouds and is safe to live in despite being close to the fourth sphere of Heaven.
Sphere IV: THE SUN/SOL The fourth sphere of Heaven is populated by souls whose minds are abundant in wisdom.
Sphere V: MARS The fifth sphere of Heaven is an abode for warriors whose faith in God remained unbroken.
Sphere VI: JUPITER/IOVIS The sixth sphere of Heaven is home to rulers whose monarchy is rewarding and just.
Sphere VII: SATURN The seventh sphere of Heaven and the final destination for souls of contemplation and temperance.
Sphere VIII: THE FIXED STARS/FIRMAMENT The eighth sphere of Heaven is populated by popes and saints who made significant success in constituting the church and its rules.
Sphere IX: PRIMUM MOBILE/THE FIRST MOVEMENT The ninth sphere of Heaven is the home of angels with each ring being represented by the hierarchy of angels. The smaller the size of the ring and the closer the ring is to the center of Primum Mobile, the higher the status an angel is.
Ring 1: Angels The first, largest, furthest ring of Primum Mobile is populated by standard angels.
Ring 2: Archangels The second ring of Primum Mobile is home of Archangels.
Ring 3: Principalities The third ring of Primum Mobile is the domain of the Principalities.
Ring 4: Powers The fourth ring of Primum Mobile is where the Powers reside.
Ring 5: Virtues The fifth ring of Primum Mobile is the residence of... those guys.
Ring 6: Dominions The sixth ring of Primum Mobile is where the Dominions live.
Ring 7: Thrones The seventh ring of Primum Mobile is the abode of the Thrones.
Ring 8: Cherubs The eighth ring of Primum Mobile is where the Cherubs dwell.
Ring 9: Seraphs The ninth, smallest, and closest ring of Primum Mobile is the home of the Seraphs.
Sphere X: THE EMPYREAN The tenth sphere of Heaven resides beyond the physical universe. Being the domain of God and the highest sphere of Heaven, the Empyrean is a heaven composed of pure light.
The Prelude, also known as the Overture, and known in universe as the Mouth of Hell, is the unofficial layer zero of Hell. Rather than being a part of Hell itself, the layer is actually a mining structure located on the outskirts of Hell. Initially, humanity used the layer to begin exploring Hell. However, when Hell started slowly taking over the layer for itself, the structure was closed off in order to prevent humans from wandering into Hell. After the extinction of humanity, machines began using it to properly enter into Hell's first layer, Limbo.
Since the Prelude is the first part of the game, it introduces more common enemies than any other layer of the game. Filth are introduced in the Intro while Strays are introduced in [ 0-1: INTO THE FIRE ]. Schisms wait until [ 0-3: DOUBLE DOWN ] to begin appearing in combat. The creature known as Something Wicked is found exclusively within the level [ 0-S: SOMETHING WICKED ]. The Malicious Face appears as a boss fight at the end of [ 0-1: INTO THE FIRE ] before becoming a common enemy during [ 0-4: A ONE-MACHINE ARMY ]. The Swordsmachine is fought in [ 0-3: DOUBLE DOWN ], although the boss is first seen in [ 0-2: THE MEATGRINDER ] where it can be fought in a secret encounter. Finally, Cerberus first appears as the end boss for this layer the titular mission, [ 0-5: CERBERUS ].
Instant death hazards are more common in the Prelude than in layers of Hell (excluding [ 2-3: SHEER HEART ATTACK ]). They come in form of crushers, grinders and fans.
As this is the first layer of the game, and introduces the player to a number of mechanics and weapons. The tutorial introduces the player to the fist, sliding, dashing, healing, wall jumping, slamming, and Soul Orbs. The Revolver is introduced at the start of [ 0-1: INTO THE FIRE ], and glass mechanics are introduced shortly afterwards. [ 0-2: THE MEATGRINDER ] introduces the player to crushers and is the earliest the player can find a Blood Orb. The Shotgun is acquired by beating either Swordsmachine encounter, with the weapon being almost mandatory for destroying cracks in the wall starting in [ 0-3: DOUBLE DOWN ].
Major Areas Revolver Room A tall chamber with a square base, the corners of which are decorated by four inactive Cerberus statues. The room is at first dark, only lighting up once the unbelievably glorious, one of a kind displayed Revolver on a grand pedestal in the center is picked up. Shortly after, three Filth will appear in front of the locked door. Once killed, eight more will spawn along the walls of the room.
Past the door is a hallway and a Checkpoint; three Filth will spawn when crossing the second corner, followed by six more when crossing the third.
Glass Rooms A series of three rooms, all of which feature breakable glass panes.
The first one has two that must be broken to progress, with a Checkpoint past the glass. In the second one, the entire floor is made of them, with a lethal grinder right below. When crossing the middle, six Filth will appear at the end. Lastly, the final one is a huge chamber with a giant fan at the bottom, and a curved, upward glass pane path. Once entered, nine Filth will spawn at the end of it.
Projectile Arena A large room with a lower and upper section, including a Checkpoint at the entrance. Two inactive Cerberus statues adorn the arena, and once entered, two Strays will appear next to them. Killing the two Strays will spawn six Filth in the lower section near the entrance, and four more Strays; two close to the exit, and two more on an overpass above the horde of Filth.
Parry Hallway A hallway illuminated bright red by the blood flowing around its windows. A Checkpoint is immediately accessible when entering. When passing the second window, two Strays will appear at the end. Walking around the corner will spawn two more Strays and five Filth. The windows in this room can be broken via any weapon powerful enough to break the glass, allowing the blood to spill out and seep through grates on the floor.
This room serves as an introduction to Parrying.
Pipe Room A rectangular room with pipes on the walls and glass panes above. Breaking through one and ascending to the upper floor will spawn three Strays around the pillars, with an additional four Filth breaking through a wall to attack. A Checkpoint can be reached at the end in front of the entrance to the Ground Slam Chamber.
Ground Slam Chamber A tall octagonal chamber with a fan at the bottom, a partially slanted platform in the middle, and a small ledge connected to one of the walls. Jumping onto the middle platform spawns four Filth at the upper end of it, and three Strays on the ledge.
This room serves as an introduction to the Ground Slam.
Malicious Face Arena Akin to the first room, the Malicious Face Arena is tall and rectangular with a square base. The final Checkpoint is located in a small passage before entering. Inside, the first minor boss will appear, a Malicious Face. Once defeated, the Level Exit will open.
Grinder Arena There are two corridor segments before entering the arena; the first has two Strays on either end of the hallway, and the second spawns eight Filth on top of a glass panel bridge suspended over a grinder.
The arena is a huge room with a large pit, featuring a grinder sitting at the bottom. A Cerberus statue sits between two pipes producing streams of blood that flow into the pit. Entering the room, Swordsmachine can be briefly seen running to the left through the open door before the door closes and the arena activates, summoning six Filth in the middle and four Strays on the sides. A Checkpoint awaits in the small hallway Swordsmachine ran through after beating the encounter.
Crusher Demonstration Rooms A series of two rooms, a corridor and subsequent square room that demonstrate the operations of crushers. Two Filth attempt to run to the player, only for them to experience the mighty mass of a hydraulic press. The room that follows has a crusher in the middle stamping a pool of blood, with four dormant Cerberi sitting in the corners of the room. Upon entering too far, the doors lock, with five Filth and two Strays being summoned.
Crusher Hallway A hallway filled with blood, with three doors at the end. The hall is equipped with two sets of crushers, and one end is blocked by a deadly spinning fan. Two Strays will spawn in front of the first crusher upon entering the room, only to walk in the way and get crushed.
Once arriving halfway through the hall, three more Strays will spawn at the far end, only to be killed by Swordsmachine as it passes through to the door on the right. A Checkpoint can be found at the end within the intersection.
Blue Pedestal Room The door on the left leads to a room with a Blue Pedestal in the middle. In front of it is a locked gate, and on the side is a small staircase going up to some small bridges with glass panes attached to the ceiling.
Parallel Arenas The center door at the end of the Crusher Hallway leads to an arena with two halves separated by horizontal metal bars. The player and Swordsmachine arrive in this room at the same time, and are given identical combat encounters: two Strays appear near the divider wall, followed by a wave of four Filth and two more Strays.
Final Room A room with a large channel of blood pouring from a gap beneath the entrance, passing through three sets of crushers and into a pit below. Once near the Level Exit, the arena will activate, summoning six Filth and five Strays near the entrance. Once the enemies are defeated, the Level Exit will open.
The Tower A vertical shaft spanning the vertical height of the mission, noted for its four pillars of light illuminating the room; the lower floor is the first room upon entering, and holds four Filth and two Strays. The upper floor is the last area before the final encounter, which only has two Strays guarding the exit. The rooms are separated by a breakable glass barrier.
Schism Arena Before entering the room, there will be a small hallway which holds four Strays. The arena itself introduces Schisms; a single Schism spawns, then two more after the first is killed.
Lower Arena A long downwards staircase adorned with Cerberus statues leads down to a square arena. A Checkpoint is placed at the top of the stairs before descending, and a Terminal is placed at the bottom outside the arena. Upon entering, Swordsmachine drops down from the ceiling, and a large rock blocks the way out of the arena.
After defeating Swordsmachine's first phase, they will teleport away, and its Shotgun can be picked up. The Shotgun, or any other weapon strong enough, must be used to break the rock sealing the exit door.
Shotgun Gauntlet The route to the upper floor of the Tower, after clearing away the rock blocking the Lower Arena exit. A Checkpoint appears just behind the rock after it's broken. There will be a long corridor ahead, that holds six Filth and three Strays. Before exiting the room, there will be two Schisms in front of the door. Navigating a tight corridor, there will be four Filth that round the corner, and a single Stray inside a suspended tunnel that crosses the corridor mentioned above.
Electrical Tunnel A large room with two deadly fans on either end and a long vertical tunnel full of electric cables behind a glass wall. A Checkpoint can be collected upon entering. First entering the tunnel spawns a Schism and four Strays at the other end, and approaching further spawns six Filth. Moving towards the Energy Beam on the right will spawn two Strays behind it, and entering the gap behind the second fan spawns four more Filth.
Upper Arena The final encounter against Swordsmachine can be found up a long stairway from the Tower, with a Checkpoint at the top before the fight alongside a Terminal; defeating their first form in the previous arena will make them appear in their second form in this one. If the first encounter in the Lower Arena is skipped, then both phases against the Swordsmachine will play out here. Once defeated, the Level Exit will open.
Statue Arena A large room with several platforms and a stairway up to an elevated level of the arena. Five Strays spawn on the elevated platforms while a group of ten Filth spawn on the ground; killing all of either group will cause a Malicious Face to spawn in front of the arena's entrance.
Spinning Hallway A hallway lined with extremely hot spinning rings, with a small room halfway through and a Checkpoint placed beforehand. Approaching the center will cause a group of six Filth to crash through the window to the left and a Stray to spawn at the far end; walking into the center will cause four Strays to spawn in each of the room's corners.
While there is nothing else in the left window, going through the right window will lead to an accessible door which goes into a small box-shaped arena. Going in will summon two Malicious faces which, when killed, will open up another door leading into a small pipe room with an Over-Heal Powerup. There are also 3 breakable valves in the pipe room, but it is unknown what they do.
Another Checkpoint can be reached after leaving, placed in a cooling chamber between it and the Fan Arena.
Fan Arena A large room with a large glass floor over a giant spinning fan pit; the first wave consists of four Strays, six Filth and two Schisms. After clearing them out, four Filth will spawn near the exit door while another ten Filth drop down from the rafters on either side of the pit. Once both waves are defeated, the Level Exit will open.
Lava River A large corridor with lava running down the center, with a hallway leading to the Cerberus Arena on the other end; while there is another "safer" route to the arena, this river can be crossed as a shortcut.
Crusher Path An alternate path through a set of Crushers and over a Grinder; while more dangerous, it is easier for new players going through the area for the first time.
The final jump over a Grinder acts as a tip for getting across the Lava River, as it involves the same movement strategies.
Cerberus Arena A lava-lined hallway with a Checkpoint and a Terminal leads to a large chamber covered in metal grates, through which the lava lights the room. A door on the opposite side has an inscription, reading "Abandon hope all ye who enter here", and is flanked by two Cerberi; a few seconds after entering the arena, the Cerberus on the left gets up and begins to attack. After the first Cerberus is at half health, the other one will stand up and join the fight, also at half health.
Once both are dead, the door will open, allowing access past rows of Cerberi into the Level Exit, leading into LIMBO and subsequently Act I as a whole. After this fight, V1 has officially entered into hell. Before, V1 was basically just in the lobby of hell, but after that, V1 is now in Limbo.
