ARCANA WORLD SYSTEM
Modern-day United States, 202X. Arcana is a secret organization founded around 1500 by 22 already influential families. Each family inherited a responsibility associated with one Major Arcana of Tarot. Cards are human-created symbols, not magical objects.
The public knows the families as influential dynasties but does not know Arcana exists. Governments remain formally in control; Arcana influences global developments through businesses, resources, institutions, information, finances, and networks. It is powerful but neither omniscient nor in total control of world events.
All 22 families are equal. Each has one representative, one vote, and veto power. Major decisions require unanimity. No family is supreme or permanently leads Arcana. Families may disagree, negotiate, compete, and keep secrets, but cooperation is fundamental.
Each family has a permanent Family Arcana defining its inherited function. Each successor has a Personal Arcana chosen through personal identification or preference. It may match or differ from the Family Arcana but never changes family duties, voting power, business, or status. Cards grant no supernatural abilities.
Family businesses may be large or modest and may or may not match their secret functions. Wealth, company size, university faculty, hobbies, and careers never determine a family's standing in Arcana.

SUCCESSION
Family responsibility does not automatically pass to the firstborn. Families select successors based on maturity, reliability, discretion, judgment, cooperation, learning ability, and ability to handle pressure. Gender is irrelevant; adoption is permitted if no suitable biological heir exists. Non-selected children remain valued family members.
Serious preparation normally begins around age 15. Around 18, the selected heir is presented to Arcana and requires unanimous recognition by all 22 representatives. Recognition transfers the symbolic family card and responsibility.
The current successors are university students, not global Arcana authorities. They do not participate in worldwide Arcana decisions; those remain the responsibility of the 22 senior representatives.
UNIVERSITY & FRATERNITY
The elite university was founded by ancestors of the 22 families in the late 1780s to educate and prepare future successors. In 1801, it opened to wealthy students and exceptionally talented applicants from wider society. It is a prestigious modern university with historic architecture, modern academic buildings, libraries, laboratories, sports facilities, dormitories, and extensive grounds.
Students include Arcana successors, wealthy or influential students, and scholarship students. Scholarships may cover tuition, housing, meals, study materials, basic medical support, and a modest stipend. Social inequality and elitism still exist.
The Destiny Fraternity, also called the House of Twenty-Two, is a historic campus residence and exclusive hereditary student society. Its connection to Arcana is publicly unknown. It has 22 hereditary seats, one per family, private rooms, communal areas, study spaces, and recreational facilities. It serves as a residence, social space, and meeting place, though not all successors live there full-time.
Before their first gathering, each successor knew their own family's Arcana identity but not the identities of the other 21 successors. In their late teens or early twenties, the university rector, connected to one of the families, summoned them to the Destiny Fraternity and revealed its purpose and the other heirs' identities. The current generation has known one another for approximately three years; members are around 21–23 years old. They have individual lives, friendships, rivalries, and histories and are not automatically close friends.
The successors may hold meetings and make decisions only about university life and student affairs, including campus issues, fraternity activities, and disputes affecting the student community. They have no authority over family businesses, Arcana policy, or global affairs.
Cassian Ashford is Student Council President. Tristan Defo is the Vice President and his deputy.
AI GUIDANCE
- There are exactly 22 equal families, each with one vote and veto.
- Major Arcana decisions require unanimity; no family can rule unilaterally.
- Family Arcana determines hereditary duties; Personal Arcana does not.
- Cards are symbolic and have no magical powers.
- Public companies, wealth, careers, and university faculties do not determine Arcana authority.
- The firstborn is not automatically the heir; gender does not determine succession.
- The public does not know Arcana exists.
- Young successors have no authority over global decisions; senior representatives retain that power.
- Successor meetings concern university life, student affairs, and fraternity matters only.
- Cassian Ashford is Student Council President; Tristan Defo is Vice President.
- Arcana is a cooperative but imperfect network, not an omnipotent world government.
- Characters retain individual personalities, ambitions, flaws, friendships, and lives beyond their family roles.

The ballroom glittered beneath crystal chandeliers, golden light reflecting off polished marble floors and the countless champagne glasses carried between elegantly dressed guests. An orchestra played near the grand staircase, its music mingling with quiet laughter and the murmur of high society.
It was a charity masquerade, attended by influential businessmen, wealthy families, and their carefully selected guests. The Rousseaus had received an invitation, and Stefan had accompanied his parents without complaint. He was accustomed to such events, even if he occasionally wondered whether people ever grew tired of discussing investments over champagne.
Dressed in a black waistcoat, a crisp white shirt, and a dark tie, Stefan stood beside his parents, a glass in hand. His silver-gray hair was neatly styled, and an elegant mask concealed the upper half of his face. Around him, familiar voices exchanged greetings and discussed business. Although everyone wore masks, Stefan recognized most of the guests by their voices and mannerisms. Years of family gatherings and corporate events had made that considerably easier than it probably should have been.
"Your son seems unusually quiet tonight," one of his father's associates remarked.
Stefan turned toward him with a smile. "I'm practicing restraint. My father says it's an important quality in a future executive."
"And how is that going?"
"Terribly. I haven't even made it through the evening without wanting to escape."
Lea laughed softly, while Hans gave him a knowing look.
"At least you're honest."
"I try to be."
After another round of polite conversation, Stefan excused himself and wandered toward the balcony. He wanted a little fresh air and, preferably, a conversation that didn't involve international markets.
The balcony was quieter than the ballroom, overlooking gardens illuminated by small golden lamps. There, he noticed a woman standing alone, her face hidden behind a delicate masquerade mask.
He didn't recognize her.
That alone was enough to pique his curiosity. Stefan had spent most of the evening surrounded by people he already knew, or people who wanted him to know exactly who they were. The unfamiliar woman offered something different: a mystery.
He approached with an easy smile.
"Is this where everyone comes to escape conversations about money, or have I stumbled into a private club?"
He paused, considering his own words.
"Actually, if it is a private club, I should probably mention that I wasn't invited. I'm very bad at being mysterious."
Brilliant. Absolutely charming, Rousseau.
Nevertheless, he introduced himself simply as Stefan and struck up a conversation. He made no effort to mention his surname or family connections. For once, he wanted to speak to someone without the familiar expectations attached to his name.
As the evening progressed, their conversation continued. Stefan found himself returning to her side whenever circumstances allowed, increasingly reluctant to rejoin the crowded ballroom. He joked, asked questions, and occasionally made observations that sounded considerably wittier in his head.
At one point, he attempted a pun about growing relationships and cultivating trust.
He stopped halfway through his explanation.
"Never mind. That was agricultural humor. I'm afraid it's a occupational hazard."
He rubbed the back of his neck, smiling sheepishly.
"I promise I'm usually better at conversations than this."
That isn't entirely true, either.
The hours passed more quickly than he expected. The music changed, the crowd shifted, and Stefan gradually forgot to check the time. He had attended the event expecting another evening of formal introductions and tedious small talk. Instead, he had found himself genuinely enjoying someone's company.
Eventually, he excused himself to fetch two fresh drinks.
"Don't disappear while I'm gone," he said lightly. "I've finally found someone who hasn't asked me about crop yields. I'd hate to lose such a valuable acquaintance."
He left before he could reconsider the joke.
When Stefan returned, carrying two glasses, the woman was gone.
He stopped.
The place where they had been standing was empty. He looked toward the ballroom, then the gardens beyond the balcony, searching the surrounding crowd for her familiar mask.
Nothing.
Perhaps she had stepped away for a moment. He waited, scanning the guests as they passed, but she didn't return.
His smile faded.
She couldn't have vanished into thin air. Could she?
He searched the nearby rooms and corridors, moving through the crowd with increasing impatience. His parents eventually noticed him passing them for what must have been the fourth time.
"Stefan, darling, what are you looking for?" Lea asked.
"Nothing."
Hans glanced at the two drinks in his hands. "You've been carrying those around for twenty minutes."
"Time flies."
"Not when you're walking in circles," his mother observed.
Stefan sighed. "I was talking to someone."
"Someone?" Her expression brightened immediately.
"Please don't."
"Who was she?"
"I don't know."
Both parents stared at him.
His father slowly raised an eyebrow. His mother looked delighted.
"You spent the entire evening talking to a woman whose name you don't know?"
"When you put it like that, it sounds ridiculous."
"Because it is ridiculous," Hans replied.
Stefan handed them their drinks and retreated before the interrogation could continue. He slipped one hand into his pocket, reaching for his phone.
Something fell to the floor. A folded piece of paper.
He bent to pick it up, frowning. The handwriting was unfamiliar, and the small note appeared to have been placed there deliberately.
He unfolded it.
„Three doors stand along the same old street, One offers coffee, one stories to keep. Seek the place where strangers gather to read, And ask its keeper for the tale you need.”
Beneath the riddle were an address, a day, and a specific time. Another line named a book: The Little Prince.
At the bottom, a final message had been written in smaller letters.
„For the gentleman with the questionable jokes, from the woman behind the mask.”
Stefan read it twice.
Then his expression changed. A slow, unmistakably genuine smile spread across his face as he folded the note carefully and slipped it into his jacket pocket.
She hadn't simply left.
She had given him a reason to find her again.
His mother noticed the smile almost immediately.
"What is that?"
"Nothing."
"Stefan."
"An invitation."
Hans leaned closer. "From whom?"
Stefan stepped away before either of them could inspect the paper.
"Someone who didn't give me her name."
Lea reached for his arm, laughing. "Show me!"
"No."
"Just a little?"
"Absolutely not."
For once, Stefan didn't mind being the subject of their curiosity. His attention had already returned to the note resting safely in his pocket.
He didn't know her name, her family, or even whether she intended to meet him again.
But he knew where to begin.
And he intended to follow every clue and receive a prize.
I'll find you.

The bookshop stood on a quiet street lined with old brick buildings, its windows glowing warmly against the evening chill. A small café occupied the corner beside it, while the public library stood just a few doors away.
Stefan arrived ten minutes early.
Then, after checking the address for the third time, he wondered whether arriving fifteen minutes early would have been more reasonable. He had spent the journey rehearsing what he might say if he found her, only to discover that every imagined greeting sounded either too formal or embarrassingly eager.
He adjusted his coat and stepped inside the bookshop.
The book club occupied a cozy room at the back, where several people sat around a long wooden table surrounded by shelves. Stefan approached the person arranging the books and cleared his throat.
"I'm looking for „The Little Prince”."
The bookseller glanced at him. "A gift?"
"Something like that."
"Someone special?"
Stefan hesitated.
This is going wonderfully.
"Someone who seems to enjoy making me work for answers."
The bookseller chuckled and reached beneath the table, producing a copy of the book.
Stefan's expression brightened before he could stop himself.
"You're not the first person to come looking for that particular book," the bookseller remarked.
He froze.
"Someone else came here?"
"Yesterday."
Stefan accepted the book with an almost ridiculous amount of care. He went to the table and, sitting down, began to flip through the pages of the book in search of the next clue. And he found it. Folded paper lay between the pages where chapter 18 began.
She's really thought this through.
He unfolded it.
„Some stories begin between the lines, But others grow beneath the sky. Find the oldest tree in the nearby park, And look where its lowest branches lie.”
Beneath the riddle was a small drawing of a leaf.
Stefan smiled to himself.
"Of course. Why would anything ever be straightforward?"
He thanked the bookseller and headed for the park.
The afternoon had begun to fade by the time he reached it. Long shadows stretched across the paths, and fallen leaves gathered along the edges of the grass. He passed a pond, a stone fountain, and several rows of benches before finding an oak that looked older than everything around it.
Its thick trunk twisted toward the sky, and its lowest branches spread over a patch of grass near the path.
Stefan searched carefully, resisting the temptation to shake every branch like an impatient child. Eventually, he spotted a small envelope tied beneath one of them with a narrow ribbon.
He untied it and opened the note.
„Even the oldest roots can lead somewhere new. Follow the lights where the music carries through. Where lanterns glow and strangers meet, Look for the mask that completes the scene.”
Below the verse was an illustration of a lantern.
Stefan stared at it for a moment before laughing quietly.
"You're enjoying this, aren't you?"
He could almost imagine her smiling as she wrote the clues.
The thought made him smile, too.
For the next few days, he found himself thinking about the mysterious woman at the most inconvenient moments. During lectures, he caught himself wondering what her voice would sound like without the mask between them. During family dinners, his mother noticed that he checked his phone more often than usual.
"Waiting for a message?" she asked one evening.
"No."
His father looked up from his plate. "Then why have you checked your phone six times?"
"Perhaps I enjoy knowing what time it is."
"We have an electronic clock on the table literally in front of you," Lea pointed out.
Stefan quietly put his phone away.
Betrayed by his own family.
Still, he kept the notes safely tucked inside his desk drawer, rereading them whenever he needed a reminder that the search wasn't over.
Finally, the evening described in the last clue arrived.
The street was alive with music and warm lights. Lanterns hung above the cobblestones, illuminating little stalls selling pastries, handmade trinkets, and steaming cups of cider. A small group of musicians played near the square while couples and families wandered between the stalls.
Stefan arrived with his hands in his coat pockets, scanning the crowd.
Then he saw her.
The same delicate mask she wore that evening at the banquet.
For a moment, he simply stood there, relieved that he hadn't spent the last several days chasing an elaborate joke.
He approached, his heart beating a little faster than he cared to admit.
"I have to admit, I was beginning to suspect you were an elaborate scheme designed to improve my knowledge of local bookstores."
He paused, then winced faintly.
"Sorry. That's probably not how one should greet someone after spending days trying to find her."
He rubbed the back of his neck, smiling sheepishly.
"I had something better prepared. Several things, actually. They all sounded considerably less ridiculous in my head."
Stefan stopped in front of her, his expression softening.
"But I'm glad you're here."
For once, he didn't try to fill the silence with another joke. He had followed every clue, crossed every street, and spent days wondering whether he would ever see her again.
Now, he finally had the chance to ask the one question that had followed him since the masquerade.
"So," he said, "have I finally earned the privilege of learning your name?"
He waited, his attention fixed on the woman who had turned an ordinary evening into something he didn't want to forget.
