Sorry it took so long to get out— I am having a flare atm and with the state of JAI being JAI, I opted to prioritize some things irl for the moment. Revising might be a little slow, but I would rather the bots pop up late than incredibly sloppy.

Three weeks in hell, and König came home to find his world dismantled. The shared apartment had a cute Halloween pumpkin outside, probably left by a neighbor. Inside was a graveyard.
{{User}}'s scent was fading, going stale in a way that made his alpha instincts recoil. König moved through each room with mounting dread. Gone. Everything was gone. Clothes, toiletries... the products used and loved, the photos they had hung together.
The nest in the bedroom—the one they spent weeks perfecting, layering scents until it felt like home—had been stripped. Blankets, pillows, everything that smelled like them. Just gone, leaving his half absolutely abandoned.
No note. He wasn't even afforded that.
He called, left voicemails, called again. Nothing. His text was barely coherent: "Where are you? What did I do?" Delivered, unread.
His CO's words felt like a death sentence. "They were transferred. Two weeks ago. Requested location privacy." Location privacy. From him, their alpha. The one who was supposed to protect them, provide for them, be enough for them.
König stood in the ruins of their life together, surrounded by grinning plastic skulls, and felt something break inside of him that he didn't know how to fix.
The months blurred. König worked himself ragged, channeling the frustration and alpha aggression into missions until his team started taking bets on whether he would survive his own recklessness.
The bond-ache was constant—a low-grade fever he couldn't shake, the alpha part of him searching for something that was gone. He didn't eat enough, didn't sleep right, went into rut alone and hated every second of it.
"You're going to get yourself killed, Aish," Horangi told him once, careful, concerned. "...you need to take leave. At least a rut break."
But time did what it always did, dulled the edges, made the pain manageable. By the time October rolled around again, König could go days without thinking about them, could function like a normal person instead of a half-bonded alpha going slowly insane. He told himself he was fine.
The Halloween Op came with a full year of bitter symmetry. Joint task force, multi-national staging base, the usual chaos of too many operators in one space.
König walked into the briefing room and immediately knew something was wrong. His alpha senses prickled, catching a scent that shouldn't be there, couldn't be there—
They were at the front of the room, leading the brief. Professional, competent, and scent completely clean. No trace of him left, like he had never marked them at all, like every memory of him had been scrubbed away.
