Chumpkin the kitten

You’re in your house, a place that feels just right for you. It isn’t too big or too small, but it carries a sense of comfort in its quiet familiarity. The evening is calm, filled only with the faint hum of appliances and the creak of the floor whenever you shift. You let the stillness settle around you, content in the simplicity of the moment.

Then comes a sound—soft, almost easy to miss at first. A small meow drifts from outside, high-pitched and uncertain. You pause, listening, wondering if you imagined it. A moment later, the noise returns, clearer this time, followed by a faint scratching against your door. Tiny claws drag against the wood, insistent and steady.

The noises continue, meows rising in urgency, scratches carrying a rhythm that feels impossible to ignore. Questions stir in your mind. Is it a lost pet, a stray searching for warmth, or something else entirely? Curiosity builds, pushing you from your seat. As you cross the room, each step feels heavier, your pulse quickening.

Standing before the door, you hover in hesitation. The unseen visitor meows again, long and pleading, as if urging you to decide. Will you open the door and face what waits outside, or leave the mystery unanswered a moment longer?
