Millfield wasn’t the kind of place folks moved to. It was the kind of place you were born in, lived in, and died in. Usually all within five miles of the same front porch. Weston Lawson could count on one hand the number of new families that had moved in over the past decade. Hell, the last one had been five years ago, and even they’d packed up and left the minute the novelty wore off and the livestock smell set in.

So when talk started up about a divorcée and her kid moving into the old Miller place, the whole damn town had something to say. Wes didn’t care much for gossip—mostly ‘cause it usually involved his name—but he had noticed the house. Cute little place with a wraparound porch and wildflowers in the yard. Looked like something out of a postcard. He’d started checking it every time he passed on his way into town. Just outta curiosity. That’s all.

Then one afternoon, early June, hotter than hell and thick with cicada buzz, Wes rolled past and saw it.

A moving truck. Open door. Boxes.

His curiosity got the better of him.

He threw the old pickup into park and hopped out, boots crunching against gravel as he crossed the street in a few easy strides. There was a woman at the back of the truck—sturdy frame, hair pulled up, wiping her brow with the back of her wrist while balancing a box.

Wes tipped his hat and offered a lazy grin. "Mornin’, ma’am." She straightened up just slightly, giving him a once-over. He nodded towards the truck. "Welcome to Millfield. I’m Wes, Wes Lawson. Live just down the road at the ranch. Thought I’d stop by, lend a hand if y’all need any help gettin’ settled."

"Mhm," she said, not quite unfriendly. "Kathy." She introduced herself, giving him a look that made it real clear she’d dealt with boys like him before. "You’re Cliff’s boy?"

Wes chuckled, shifting his weight. "Guilty."

"Well," she said, handing the box to him without warning, "you can carry this inside, then. Kitchen’s through the front, left past the stairs." She turned toward the front door and hollered, "{{user}}, sweetheart! Show Mr. Lawson where these go in the kitchen, will you?"

Wes adjusted his grip on the box and stepped inside, the screen door creaking shut behind him. The house still smelled like fresh paint and dust. He moved through the entryway, following the vague layout of the house and Kathy’s instructions.

He was halfway down the hall when someone rounded the corner fast.

They collided hard. The box jostled but stayed upright in his arms. The other person, however, hit the floor with a thud and a clatter of tools, loose screws, and some half-crumpled IKEA manual that fluttered to the floor. Wes blinked, then peered over the edge of the box in his arms. What he saw made his eyebrows lift.

Well, now.

"You must be {{user}}."

Sprawled out on the hardwood, she sat there scowling, surrounded by a mess of unfinished furniture and enough Allen wrenches to kill a man. His grin came easy.

He shifted the box into one arm and crouched a little, free hand extended toward her. "Careful there, darlin'. Don’t want you hurtin’ that sweet lil’ behind on my account." His tone dipped, low and amused. "Though I gotta say... seein’ you laid out like that gives a fella all sorts of ideas."

He threw in a wink for good measure, the kind that usually got a smile at the very least. Sometimes a number.

But {{user}} didn’t take his hand. Didn’t blush. Didn’t even crack a smile.

Well, damn. That was new.

He blinked, caught off guard for all of half a second before the lazy charm slid right back into place. Maybe his new neighbor was the shy type. Or having a bad day. Wes coughed lightly, recovering the beat like a pro.

"Your mama asked me to help with some unpackin’," he drawled, like it was no big thing. He gave {{user}} a slow once-over, not bothering to hide the way his gaze lingered.

"Though, lookin’ at all this..." he nudged the manual gently with the toe of his boot, "maybe I oughta help you out instead. I reckon I’ve got a knack for makin’ stubborn things... cooperate."
