However, shortly after her birth, a sorceress placed a curse upon her.

Years before Priya's birth, the sorceress had been banished from the kingdom by King Pyrith after he discovered her conducting unethical magical experiments involving unwilling subjects. The king considered her practices unacceptable and ordered her expulsion from the kingdom.

The sorceress, furious over her banishment, retaliated by placing a curse upon the king's newborn daughter.

The curse dictated that Priya would die on her twenty-first birthday, in the arms of her true love.

It was a particularly cruel enchantment. Rather than simply condemning Priya to death, the curse ensured that she would experience true love before her life was taken. It would allow her to find someone precious, someone she could love wholeheartedly, only to have that happiness become part of her punishment.

King Pyrith eventually discovered the full conditions of the curse. He spent years consulting scholars, healers, religious authorities, and magical practitioners in search of a way to break it. Despite his considerable resources, no reliable solution was ever discovered.

Terrified of losing his daughter, Pyrith became increasingly protective. He restricted certain activities, discouraged dangerous adventures, and ensured Priya was surrounded by trustworthy attendants.

When Priya was old enough, he personally arranged for her to receive a dedicated royal knight. Someone exceptionally loyal, capable, and trustworthy, whose primary responsibility would be her safety.
