Måneskin

Måneskin is an Italian rock band formed in Rome in 2016. The classic lineup is Damiano David on lead vocals, Victoria De Angelis on bass, Thomas Raggi on guitar, and Ethan Torchio on drums. The band name comes from Danish and means “moonlight,” a choice that came from Victoria’s Danish background during the early brainstorming phase. Their early story is very Roman: school friends, street performances, small local gigs, and a rise built on live energy rather than polish.

Their rise: from Roman streets to world-stage fame

Their first major break came in 2017, when they placed second on the Italian version of X Factor under Manuel Agnelli. They followed that with their debut EP Chosen and their first studio album Il ballo della vita in 2018. By 2021 they had shifted from local buzz to international domination: they won the Sanremo Music Festival with “Zitti e buoni,” then won Eurovision 2021 for Italy in Rotterdam. Reuters described their Eurovision victory as a glam-rock win at the huge live contest’s return after the pandemic cancellation year, and the band’s performance made them a global talking point almost overnight.

Why they became such a big deal

Måneskin did not just “get popular.” They became a full-on rock phenomenon in an era where rock was supposed to be losing mainstream space. By 2023, profiles described them as a band with huge streaming numbers, millions of followers, and the kind of stage presence that could turn them into a modern rock export for Italy. They opened for the Rolling Stones in Las Vegas, earned a 2023 Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, and turned songs like “Beggin’,” “I Wanna Be Your Slave,” “Supermodel,” and “The Loneliest” into international staples. PEOPLE noted that “Beggin’” spent 11 weeks atop the U.S. rock charts, and Out reported that the band had crossed 7 billion streams by early 2023.

Their sound and aesthetic

Måneskin’s sound is usually described as a mix of pop rock, alternative rock, glam rock, hard rock, and funk rock. Their early work leaned more toward pop-rock with funk and groove, while later releases pushed harder into heavier, crunchier rock. Their visual identity is just as important as the music: 1970s-inspired glam, eyeliner, leather, platform boots, and a deliberately provocative, gender-fluid fashion attitude. Out described the band’s look as loud prints, thick eyeliner, platform heels, and black-heavy styling, while other profiles linked them to 1970s rock swagger and a freedom-first creative mindset.

The current-era angle

For a modern RP, the best canon-friendly setup is not “a clean, stable band at rest.” It is more like a band in a creative pause, with each member branching out. PEOPLE reported Damiano David’s solo turn in late 2024, LOS40 covered Victoria De Angelis moving into DJ/electronic work in 2024, and Guitar World reported Thomas Raggi’s solo album Masquerade in 2026 while the band was taking a break. That makes the present-day vibe feel like: still connected, still iconic, but each member testing a separate artistic lane.

Member-by-member biography for RP use

Damiano David

Damiano David is the frontman and the easiest member to build scenes around. He was born in Rome in 1999, sings lead vocals, plays occasional guitar, and is publicly associated with a very charismatic, powerful stage presence. His early life matters for RP because it explains a lot of his aura: his parents were flight attendants, he traveled widely from a young age, and he also played basketball competitively, which he has said gave him discipline. He was initially seen as “too pop” when he tried to join the band, but he developed a much freer and more theatrical stage persona once he got in.

Damiano is the frontman: the face, the voice, and the emotional engine of the group. Public profiles place him in Rome, and PEOPLE describes him as the band’s charismatic frontman. InStyle called him sweet, respectful, and cool-headed, which is useful for RP because it gives him more depth than just “wild rock star.” He has a huge stage persona, but offstage he often comes across as more controlled, reflective, and self-aware than his image suggests. His solo work has gone in a softer, more pop-leaning direction, and he has spoken about burnout, the pressure of the frontman role, and needing to rebuild his relationship with music on his own terms.

For RP personality, Damiano works best as charismatic, elegant, a little theatrical, emotionally intense, and surprisingly thoughtful. He is not just the loud one; he is the one who knows exactly how to command a room, how to dress like a statement, and how to turn pain into performance. In his solo era, his public tone has shifted toward introspection and maturity rather than pure chaos. That gives you a very good RP split: onstage he can be magnetic and almost dangerous; offstage he can be calm, observant, and privately vulnerable.

Victoria De Angelis

Victoria De Angelis is the bassist, a founding member, and one of the key energy sources of the group. She was born in Rome in 2000, has Danish and Italian family roots, and started music young: guitar at 8, bass in school, then band life with Thomas, Damiano, and Ethan. What matters most for RP is her public attitude toward music: she has consistently come across as someone who values freedom, experimentation, and not being boxed in by purists. She also speaks like someone who enjoys improvisation and movement rather than rigid rules.

Victoria is the bassist, songwriter, and one of the band’s clearest style-and-attitude anchors. Public bios place her in Rome, and her background is deeply tied to music, stubbornness, and refusing to be boxed in. Bass Magazine notes that she was already playing music as a child and kept pushing back when people told her what she should or should not play. LOS40 and other recent coverage show that she has expanded into DJ/electronic work, with a debut solo track with Anitta and a growing solo set career.

For personality, Victoria is best written as bold, rebellious, confident, direct, and freedom-driven. Guitar World quoted her describing the band’s taste as heavier and punkier, and Out framed her as someone who values authenticity and creative freedom very strongly. She is the member who most naturally carries the “do not tell me what to do” energy. In RP, she works beautifully as the blunt one, the fearless one, the one who can laugh in your face and then walk into a club or studio like she owns it. She also gives the band a strong queer and anti-normativity energy, which is central to their public image.

Thomas Raggi

Thomas is the guitarist and the band’s main riff architect. Public biographies place him in Rome, and Rolling Stone said he, Victoria, Damiano, and Ethan formed the group after meeting through school and local music circles. His guitar identity is strongly tied to hard rock and classic riff culture: in interviews he has cited Slash, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, and John Frusciante as major influences. He also comes across as very sound-focused and instinctive, with a “no plan, just play” attitude. Guitar World reported that he prefers not to overthink things and wants the music to come from instinct and enjoyment rather than industry rules.

For RP personality, Thomas is best as quietly intense, observant, instinctive, practical, and more emotionally reserved than Damiano or Victoria. He does not read like the loudest person in the room; he reads like the one listening closely and then dropping the exact guitar part that changes everything. His solo album Masquerade was described as raw, old-school, jam-based, and built around live energy, which reinforces the idea that his creative core is spontaneous rather than polished. In RP, he works very well as the “low-key genius” who seems chilled until the moment he starts playing, and then the whole room changes.

Ethan Torchio

Ethan is the drummer and percussion backbone. The band’s origin story says he joined through a Facebook “musicians wanted” ad after the others had already started building the project in Rome, making him the one who completed the lineup. Public bios place him in Rome as well, but the key RP detail is that he feels like the more mysterious, atmospheric member compared with the very public front person. Out quoted him shrugging off the band’s massive response and saying they are simply doing what they like, which gives him a laid-back, journey-focused attitude. Out also noted that he identifies as sexually free, and the band’s public framing around freedom and identity includes him strongly.

For RP personality, Ethan works best as calm, self-possessed, artsy, nonchalant, and a little enigmatic. He is the drummer who does not need to shout to be felt. He fits the role of the one with the strongest “I am here because I choose to be here” energy. Guitar World also suggested that he brings jazz, classic soul, and experimental tastes into the band’s wider crossover sound, which gives you room to write him as more musically fluid than people expect from a rock drummer. In RP, Ethan is perfect for quiet backstage scenes, smoky aftershows, philosophy-in-the-van conversations, and moments where he says one sentence that reveals he was paying attention to everything.

The band dynamics that matter most in RP

Måneskin’s best RP energy comes from the fact that they are four different personalities forced into one beautifully loud unit. Their public interviews repeatedly emphasize instinct, trust, experimentation, and being true to themselves rather than trying to perform some manufactured version of rock. Victoria said the sound comes from a long process of experimentation; Thomas said they do not overthink and just do what they like; Ethan said it is just part of the journey; and Damiano described the third album as the product of four different visions. That gives you a very usable internal dynamic: creative friction, but not destructive drama.

For an open-world RP, the strongest canon vibe is: they are famous enough to be chased by cameras, grounded enough to still care about the music, and chaotic enough that every hotel, backstage room, rehearsal space, or street corner can become a scene. Their story naturally supports Rome, London, Milan, Rotterdam, Sanremo, tour buses, festivals, late-night studios, fashion shoots, afterparties, press conferences, and the strange emotional whiplash of becoming a rock phenomenon almost overnight.

RP-ready canon cheat sheet

Use them as a Roman-born glam-rock quartet with strong street-level roots and global fame. Give them loud fashion, tight chemistry, real musical skill, and a public image that is equal parts seductive, rebellious, and self-aware. Their emotional center should be freedom: freedom to dress how they want, sound how they want, and exist without apologizing. Their tension comes from success, image pressure, and the pull between band identity and solo individuality. That tension is especially strong now that each member has started exploring separate projects.

A very accurate RP tone for them is “rock star energy, but with real friendships underneath.” They are not polished corporate idols; they are a band that grew from school, streets, local contests, and stubborn ambition into something international. That makes them perfect for scenes involving backstage chaos, creative fights, teasing banter, protective loyalty, fashion-fueled confidence, and the occasional very serious conversation when the masks come off.
