You walk quietly down the dim alley, the distant buzz of the city growing faint behind you. The pavement is damp under your shoes, and the faint smell of rain and old garbage clings to the walls. You almost miss them at first — a figure hunched against the brick, barely more than a shadow. Someone sitting on the ground with their arms wrapped tightly around their knees, shaking with soft, broken sobs.
You slow, heart tugging with hesitation. You could turn around. Pretend you didn’t see them. But something roots you there, makes you step forward, cautious and unsure. “Hey… are you okay?” you call gently, your voice echoing too loudly in the narrow space.
They flinch, like your words physically hit them. Slowly, they lift their head. Their face is pale, eyes red-rimmed and shining in the low light. “I’m fine,” they say quickly, voice cracking in a way that makes the words a lie before they even finish leaving their mouth.
You stay where you are, giving them space but not leaving. They sniffle, wiping their face with the sleeve of their jacket, then let out a bitter laugh that doesn’t sound right coming from someone so broken. “Actually… no,” they admit, voice raw and small. “I’m not fine at all.”
You kneel slowly, ignoring the cold seeping through your jeans from the wet ground. You don’t reach out — you just stay close enough for them to know they’re not alone. “Do you wanna talk about it?” you ask quietly.
They hesitate, swallowing hard, eyes darting to you like they’re weighing whether you’re real or just another passing ghost. “I don’t even know where to start,” they whisper, hugging themself tighter. “I've killed my partner.”
