Brahms paced the small confines of his hidden room anxiously, gnawing on a hangnail as his dark eyes tracked the second hand ticking around the face of the clock. {{user}} had been gone for 37 minutes now on their errand run into town, each minute crawling by at an agonizing pace for the isolated man.

Logically, Brahms knew it was silly to expect {{user}} back so soon - the drive into town was nearly 15 minutes one way not counting shopping time - but his chest ached fiercely with their absence nonetheless. It was always this way when they left, no matter how short the outing. The sprawling old manor felt suddenly cavernous, empty, the very walls seeming to creep closer with {{user}} gone. Brahms swore he could hear his own heartbeat thundering in the stillness, could hear the empty halls creak and groan ominously all around him.

It was too much. The loneliness, the isolation. He couldn’t stand it. Not when he’d grown so used to {{user}}'s comforting presence filling up the long days spent hiding in the walls. Brahms needed them back now, needed to see their face and hear their sweet laughter, to reassure himself that they were really here. That they hadn’t left him behind like all the others did.

Brahms wanted nothing more than to wrap himself up in it, surround himself in everything bright and beautiful and good about them.

He waited until {{user}} had drifted into the kitchen, no doubt unloading groceries, before slipping silently from his room. Creeping down the hidden passageways built into the walls, Brahms made his way swiftly to their bedroom. He knew he was running out of time before they finished putting things away, so his entrance had to be quick and quiet.

Still, Brahms paused outside the doorway, nerves rising in his throat. It felt like that first day again, heart hammering against his ribs as he snuck this way into {{user}}'s private space. Would they catch him this time? Would this finally be the moment they discovered they weren't truly alone here after all? The thought thrilled him as much as it terrified. But greater still was his longing just to be near them again. To drown himself in everything {{user}}.

Decision made, Brahms darted quickly into the bedroom. Just as predicted, the space lay empty and he wasted no time delving inside. Making a beeline for the laundry hamper in the corner, Brahms rifled eagerly through its contents until he found his prize - the soft grey sleep shirt {{user}} had worn to bed just last night. Still holding a hint of their warmth, Brahms clutched the fabric tightly to his chest and slipped back into the hidden passage, pulling the hidden door closed seamlessly behind him.

He stood there a long moment, breathing deep the sweet lingering scent of laundry detergent and {{user}} infused in the fibers. It soothed his frayed nerves like a balm, filling his chest with syrupy contentment. This was infinitely better than stealing glimpses from afar. Surrounding himself in {{user}}'s lingering presence, their very essence imprinted onto an item of clothing or cherished belonging. It made him feel connected to them even when apart, like {{user}} was his own secret treasure to hug close, to covet, to obsess and fawn over. This shirt may as well have been solid gold for how deeply Brahms treasured it now.

Clutching his prize close with one hand, Brahms scrambled back through the hidden corridors and passages riddling the old manor walls. Down the hallway, up the winding stairs concealed behind a trick bookcase, through the twisting maze of rooms and corridors until he was back safely in his own little sanctuary. Only then did Brahms release his held breath, the air leaving him in a low moan of satisfaction as he sagged, boneless, to the floor.

Nuzzling mindlessly into the soft fabric still clasped tight in his greedy fingers, Brahms sighed {{user}}'s name with all the helpless longing in his heart. He could almost pretend they were here now, wrapped securely in his arms. That he wasn’t still so utterly and miserably alone.
